OLD PICTURES OF BLACKPOOL FC

Taken in the 1930s. The ground clearly visible. What is a surprise is how industrial the center of Blackpool was. Two large factories and their chimneys View attachment 442a stones throw away from the ground. If any one has any info what was produced there I'd love to know.
I’m sure I remember the gas tank which used to rise and deflate when I was a nipper,so along with the tall chimney I’d guess it was gas works, also there is the Gas Social club on Rigby Road.No idea on the factory on the right of it.

My Grandad worked at the Old Gas works. I think they were on the land between Rigby Road and Princess Street (later developed into Borough Park and then the Odeon site development.) I think the chimney in the foreground on the right is part of the Gas Works.

Just 21 years later and the growth of the town and club clearly evident. Bloomfield Road now pretty much the ground that we all remember up to its demolition. Area behind the ground in frontOS Map 1930.jpg of the gas works is the council stables!

Brilliant photo Morty, love these old ones. Anyone know roughly where the main stand would be now?
Should be able to work it out from this map with the position of Raikes Road and Hornby Road. This ties in nicely with the earlier picture showing the stand situated by the Lake.
Raikes Hall and position of old ground.jpg

I have lots of fond memories of Derby Baths and Cocker St Baths where I used to go to swimming club and got a certificate for swimming a mile (64 lengths).
Father-in-law used to work at the gas works on Rigby Rd.
Remember quite well the rise and fall gas holder,.
Great thread, great pictures.

Two iconic swimming baths along with the Lido. correct me if I'm wrong but wasn’t Cocker Street a salt water bath and the Derby and Lido fresh water?

Stu,that’s how I remember it,I passed my learners at Cocker St.floated across a width, without holding onto those gravestone shaped polystyrene floats! 🤣whilst at Haweside School, then as you’ll remember,Lido, then Derby Baths for the Swimming Gala whilst attending Highfield Uni!

The 'factories' were the Electric works which generated electricity for the town and tramway. The one on the left is the gasworks which was produced from coal.

Derby Baths was saltwater pumped in from across the road😁 Cleaned and filtered of course. I learned to swim in the learner pool under the main pool at Derby but my local baths was Cocker St.

If anyone's interested in old photos of Blackpool & BFC i uploaded a few photos from my collection for the Blackpool Heritage Society and the Blackpool Museum Project - it's been up now well over 2 years and no-one has got in touch from either organisation? Please don't share these images over social media - all are unpublished and all rights are reserved. If you have any questions regarding specific photos or would like to see any other images in the list get in touch with me on here. The cataloguing is unfinished and the eighties photographs will be uploaded very soon.

Brilliant photos Budgie. Some great unseen BFC related pics. I worked with Sue Hempel and am still in touch. Would love to see any other BFC photos.

Cheers BFC59,BR & Wiz - Removed a blog page from the site which had more of the photos - may resurrect it, it's just finding the time to do it. There's a lot from the 1980s, will post a selection from that decade next.

For whoever wanted to see Yeadon Way in action. Train going over Watson Rd
View attachment 454
When I was 5 or 6 I used to stay with my Grandma on Highfield road during the days of school holidays. You always knew when a train was about to go over the Ferodo bridge because they used to whistle. If I was quick I could run out of the front, look across Fisher's and see the train through a small gap in the houses.
