Gillingham v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 26.09.20

Same kind of team as Plymouth. Horrible to break down once you've gifted them a present early doors. They will go down at every opportunity in the second half, the referee blows for anything. Were up against it I feel. Actually wish we were up against a better team, this lot second half will be ugly unless we get one early.
 
Worst half of the season. Passing ok up to final third but don't look like scoring. Kaikai for Lubala early change if nothing happening first ten minutes second half.
 
Not that needed the stats to say it but.... clear cut chances = 0

Not good enough in the final 3rd or at the back.

I get the feeling Critch will put the wind up em at half time and we'll see a much beer performance. Also, maybe the ref will be too busy counting his bung to give Gillingham even more undeserved free kicks
 
That was incredibly poor. The whole game is how Gillingham want it. Unless we impose our style of play this is another defeat. I'm going to wear thin with how soft we are across most of the pitch. It starts with effort, today has been sub standard.
 
The ref is falling for their shithousery every time when are these officials going to learn !
 
Referees like that ruin the game.

Thought we look decent enough, but needless errors letting us down.

Gillingham are the kind of team who look to win ugly. Could be tough to break them down.
 
We need to wise up. This is how other sides are in league, scrappy. And we're not reacting well to it in the first 15 mins.

That said, we are bossing the game, keeping the ball FAR better than last season but just not had that cutting edge. People need to be patient with this style of football - I'd hate to ditch it on the back of a couple of struggles to adopt the approach the Gills have - lump it forward, scrap a bit, go down at the slightest touch and generally spoil the game to bring it down to their level. Urgh.
 
Carbon copy of Plymouth and despite all the build up the final ball is letting us down. Early goal 2nd half for confidence and we'll win it comfortably.
 
We're the better team but that was a poor first half I'm afraid

We failed to defend it
As already said, a poor ref who is continually conned by Gillingham players
But we keep giving the shite ref the opportunity to give them soft free kicks and thereby inviting balls into our box
They're a route 1 team - and we are playing to that with the soft "free kicks"
We need to control the ball better - it's bouncing off our forwards at the moment
Anderson and Hamilton are both over-running the ball, enabling defenders to hoof it
Our passing is not as good as usual - especially the final ball

But we can win this - just need more quality in the final third and stop gifting them set pieces, because it's the only way they'll score!!

That was awful...we look half asleep. Need to come out firing this half...early goal and then attack attack attack. We need to rescue this game and show we have the mettle to win a fight. Too many coasting in that first half.
 
I think every team we play will try the same game plan as Plymouth and Gillingham but it is up to us to break them down
 
Lets look at the bigger picture and be positive. We are a good team with the right style of play but a couple of weaknesses. It takes time to change from that shit show of last season. It will come good. 2 cbs needed though.
 
The problem with gifting teams an early goal means we're instantly up against sides who will then look to shut up shop.
If we hadn't conceded, Gillingham would have had to have tried to play the ball more, giving us more space.

I can see this staying 1 nil.
 
I'm struggling to fathom why Ward has been playing behind Turton so much of that first half - that needs to change immediately. Turton isn't an attacking player and Ward isn't a defensive player. Likewise if we're to play out from the back i'd be much more comfortable if it was Nottingham stepping forward andmaking the play and not Epiketeta who seems to take a second or two too long and also looks like he may give it away each time.
 
I predicted 2-1 to us. They've got their one. Now it's us all the way! (Trying to be positive -- well you have to, don't you?)

In other news -- the ref is colour blind -- he only sees blues falling to the floor. We need to put our defence on the pitch ten minutes before the match starts to ensure they're awake.
 
That fat feck Steve Evans has clearly done his homework and we need that defence splitting pass to get back into this game, otherwise they will be more than happy to spoil the game. I'm sure we'll get back into the game!

The couple of weaknesses bring attack and defence?
 
The problem is if we keep going down a goal after 5 mins it becomes a huge effort every game. With the games coming thick and fast that’s a worry. We could lose our belief.
