RETURNING FROM INJURY:

Danny Ballard (Centre Half)
Kenny Dougall (Defensive Midfielder)
Ben Woodburn (Winger/Attacking Midfielder)

I think it is interesting to consider that we essentially have 6 players there who should definitely be in and around our Starting XI once they are back to full fitness/ready to join the fray. A change of 6 players is a big'un and should significantly impact the squad (for better or worse).

We've all noticed in the past few games teams stick 2/3 players on Hamilton. The introduction of Kaikai/Woodburn who are both creative/skilful attacking minded players should force teams to spread themselves back out to cover our other threats, or suffer the consequences of allowing those lads that much freedom/space. My only worry with that is, I hear Woodburn is injury prone and we know Kaikai is - if they are injured we may be in the same boat as we are now, too reliant on Hamilton which is easily nullified.

Hopefully Ballard and Gretarson will be the Northern Irish/Icelandic League One answer to Ferdinand and Vidic. Ekpiteta looks to be steadily improving and with three decent centre half options we won't be playing a full back there anymore! The benefits of a more solid back four are obvious, just have to hope it is so!

Virtue and Dougall both defensive midfielders, Virtue has a few goals in him as we've seen and Barnsley fans couldn't stop singing Dougall's praises on twitter. I saw one lad describe him as a "no nonsense defensive midfielder who isn't afraid of a tackle". A bit more grit in midfield, just what we bloody need!

I haven't completely lost faith in the Critchley/Sadler masterplan yet, especially when I considered these 6 who need to be introduced/reintroduced. My worry with this is that it puts us at a step back in terms of the squad gelling with 4 new players and 2 players returning from injury. It should give Critchley a bit of a headache in terms of squad selection (which isn't a bad thing) - I'm curious to see how he works all these new options in.

What we all reckoning then, are these lads our saving grace to the issues at hand or can no-one save us 😉.

I’d like to know why we are picking up so many injuries over something or nothing. Can’t all be bad luck and not enough pre season

Kaikaii to me flattered to deceive. Great start with us last season but he needs to offer a lot more consistency to be an asset to the team. Got all the talent but has he got the desire?
Virtue has a lot to do to win me over. A box to box player but I still think his brain tells his feet to do something they can't do.
The other four? Well know little about them but the centre halves are desperately needed imo so I hope they are better than what we've used so far. Woodburn supposedly is this creative player and that's something we are crying out for. Know nothing about Dougall.
Just said on another thread it's not just the systems we use, the players have to be good enough.

Picks up injuries because of a lack of desire? Unlucky with injuries so far in his career bet he wishes he wasn't, does more in games then given credit for watch some back on Ifollow.

2 players for every position the in form one getting the shirt we are being run like a proper club for the first time in a very long time.
Left back goes off injured yesterday, left back of quality steps off the bench. the squad as a whole will define our season, we don't need saving, just a little time and patience for it all to click.

Even if Kai Kai and Virtue were fully fit I am not sure they are the answer tbh. Kai Kai is now very injury prone and drifts in and out of games when he is fit. He needs to get consistency and needs to look at his attitude or he wont be here long. Virtue now has a lot of people to get past to fight his way into the team and who knows what effect the injury will have had on him. He was pretty slow already and I have no idea how close to full fitness he is. I am hopeful for the four new guys but we need to get them in the starting 11 sooner rather than later for them to have an impact.

No use swapping one shot shy ineffectual front player for another though. We have plenty of work for Coach Critchley to be getting on with in that department and it isn’t just personnel that needs work.

Didn't even mention his injuries so I've not a clue how you link that to desire. If when he's played you think he's been consistently good then that's your opinion.

I think he will struggle to even get on the bench as I said at the start of the season...the lad has clearly had some injury problems and I will be delighted if he proves me wrong...I dont think he will...that said he knows how to score and he works hard.

Kaikai slating season, seems he is the new whipping boy, does a lot more in games than given credit for, we miss him. He is not injury prone on purpose

only injuries that have made him inconsistent in missing games and having to get back to match fitness, he has been one of our better players whenever he has played.

Looked at the o/p and still for me a glaring omission is another striker!
I was wondering if we'd see one signed by the end of the window, I suppose we could still get one on loan but we'll have to see. I've put the lack of subs against Ipswich and Crewe down to the fact he already had our only two strikers on the pitch, so when we're in need of a goal he doesn't really have anyone else to bring on.

My hope is that with the introduction of Kaikai or Woodburn (or both), it'll create more outlets and the goals will come streaming in!

Yep our best football last season was when we had Kaikai and Fonz playing off Big Gnads

Save us , ffs could we be more any dramatic. We just completely outplayed a team that won 3-0 the week before.
Yes we are struggling to find a formation that works as in finding the net but we are only 6 games in.
Think some of you need saving from yourselves 😁

I tell you what could be a factor is staying in the EFL cup to get game time into all these players

The thing about Dougall is he has real pro experience of this league...we need some nouse and a leader. I’m hopeful he is it and the other players around him respond.
No experience in this league? He only won promotion with Barnsley from this league to the Championship. Their fans loved him for breaking up play and quickly redistributing the ball!

I was hoping that the tongue in cheek nature of referring to these players solving issues within the squad as "saving us" would come across, I even threw a wink face after one of those statements for good measure!

He played 27 times in the season Barnsley were promoted to the Championship, but he broke his leg in March 2019, played 11 times last season and was finally released this summer. I hope there are no long term effects from his injury.
