On reflection; Is football without fans, nothing?

Having had watched enough football in empty stadia, with and without piped crowd noise (I much prefer it without) what do you think?

Is football without fans nothing, or was it just, football without fans in one ground, when every other ground had fans, nothing?

Or is football without fans, consciously not attending, nothing?

Or was it just a catchy campaign phrase of its time?

Since COVID-19, and the lockdown I have watched every pool game on IFollow, and the cup games on whatever they’ve been on , but there’s nothing like being in the ground . I personally believe our you g team would have performed much better in front of a noisy passionate crowd. Watching football played in empty stadia with or without crowd noise is an anti climax.

Football without fans is diminished, but I just enjoyed watching the game from an empty old Trafford, so it must still be something.

It has a bit of a training session about it. Interesting as to whether it helps young players to develop quicker or not. Bit of both maybe. Some players will thrive on playing with better players at a higher level with no crowd pressure, others would thrive on a roaring cheering, vibrant crowd and come alive with the vibrancy of it all.

There were no fans when we all played jackets for goal posts. So why would stands full of supporters diminish your love for the game?

IMO there are those who love the actual game, and there are those that see the game day more of a social event.

I am in the first camp. I love football therefore enjoy watching it anywhere and at any level. The atmosphere is better in a full stadium of course, but it's still 22 pros duking it out and for that reason it's still the best game in the world.

Good question.

It was indeed a catchy campaign phrase picked up by a certain national fans group, who then went on to make sure it was only a small representation of those same fans who could be heard.

Glad someone else brought it up 😁

I think the lack of fans has impacted on the games. There is no way that Liverpool would concede 7 against Villa in a full ground. There's an element of professional pride that is different.

However, the ongoing football has given structure to otherwise endless drudgery. Talking about the build up, the game itself and post match analysis breaks up the week, with a positive impact on mental health.

It's not as good, but it's better than nothing.

I think the crowd is a factor in the actual game, not just a bit of window dressing or decoration. It plays as big a part as the state of the pitch, or the weather conditions, maybe more.
But I do agree with you in that I am very happy to watch 2 teams slugging it out with no crowd, its played a massive part in getting me through lockdown with some sanity intact!

The watching on iFollow is tolerable as I know its a temporary pause on actually attending.

Nothing compares to the actual experience, I don't understand how armchair fans do it for their entire lives.

It's better with fans but it's not nothing without fans. I hate the quote to be fair, football is quite clearly something without fans or it wouldn't get the viewing figures it does and the whole league would be suspended.

In my opinion, football without fans has had a huge impact. I honestly don't think the Villa v Liverpool and ManU v Spurs results would have happened with fans in.
Sadly, I think that for this season, at least, this is what we have to deal with but , jeez, am I missing it.

With virtually nothing else to look forward to short term, sport is pretty much the only thing keeping me sane right now. It isn't the same as being there, but it is still a million times better than nothing at all.

I have Premier Leagues matches on in the background with the sound down. Today we were cooking in the kitchen playing music and glanced up at the TV and then rewound it when we missed a goal.
