Wigan Athletic v Blackpool Official Matchnight Thread 26.01.21

Doing just enough to beat easily the worst side in League One.

Pitch isn’t helping us trying to pass it, but Husband, Robson, Virtue and Bez leave a lot to be desired.

Why does Bez think he needs to score a 30 yard screamer on every attack? Really not sure what the scouts saw in him.

Virtue is having a disaster game. CJ would be absolutely destroying this lot. Scary really, wasn't sure we'd miss him but we are.
Mixed for Virtue so far, couple of simple misplaced passes, but great chest control leading to 2nd goal. Also was looking for a 1-2 when Madine went for the overhead.

Really happy for Big Marv getting his first goal.Having a solid game. It’s weird watching two of our defenders learning on the job I’m not used to it with BFC.

Talk me through Yates' input.
You’re easily pleased Wiz. He’s on a par with Mark Cullen, he puts himself about a bit but he just hasn’t, in my opinion, got it I’m sorry. He plays nearly every game, 90 minutes, you’re bound to get a few goals he’s not that bad. The question is would he get goals away at Portsmouth Sunderland Charlton Lincoln when it really matters? I’m not so sure

How can MJ have been pretty poor of late. He's only played once in the last 2/3 months?
Add to that Williams was actually doing pretty well before he got injured too. He's a defensive, holding midfielder, and is actually very good at protecting the back 4 and stopping anything that comes near him.
The pre match criticism of him was way off.

Wouldn't say we deserve to be 2-0 up. But Wigan are poor and vulnerable at the back. It's nice to see us show some cutting edge in front of goal for once though 👍

Like others have said. This is far from our strongest team but let's get the result and get out of there. Re-group and go again with some confidence gained.

We seem so disjointed and we struggle to string any amount of passes together. It seems we have no identity whatsoever. I guess that's what comes with a different side each week. Sometimes through no fault of our own. Sometimes due to Critchley and his tinkering ways. It would be nice to see us get a settled side with our best players available for selection.

Caution everyone...Critchleys team talk of keep doing what you’ve been doing seldom works. Can we fast forward 15/20mins!

You lot need to go back and read the posts you've written and give your heads a good wobble.

Considering the players out with Covid and injuries this group have done us proud. I'd hate to sit next to any of you at a game, I'd have slit my wrists by now!!
I have a bucket if you need it 😉

Lost 1 I think of there last 6 games, there’s a player in Bez waiting to just come out, looked much better defensively tonight, he needs a goal to get him off and running.

We were not great first half hour or so, it looked the same old same old. Struggling to pass meaningfully forward.

A nice little spell at the end of the half there though.

We have to continue to do the basics well, pass and take on the half turn.

The strikers actually seem to have a lot more confidence than earlier in the season.

Let's get a few more goals second half.

Imagine constantly slating our striker that has scored 9 in 16...
Too many people have unnecessary dislikes for too many of our players.
Dont dislike any of them but Husband not my favourite player and Virtue not doing it out there on the right but obviously not where he wants to be playing.
What I will say based on the first half, Critchley has created a great team spirit, they all work hard and are fully committed.

Looking at the half time stats, the only one that counts is goals Wigan 0 Blackpool 2. Now then don't do a Doncaster.

Pretty sure he scored at Peterborough to put us one up.

He looked a bit rusty last game much more effective tonight 👍
