Look, a big ship

The world's biggest ship has now anchored off the Lancashire coast ready to dismantle two unused gas platforms. It must be bloody big when you consider the size of some of the Royal Caribbean cruise liners and cargo vessels of more than a quarter of a million tons. Looking forward to seeing it. Sad to see the two platforms go though. I always judge the weather in St Annes by how clear the rigs are.

Impressive. The article says it is 16 miles off dry land, so unlikely to be visible. You can see further than that across to Barrow and with a decent lens see all the detail. I am sure there will be some decent photographers on here

That's one big ship. I love the stats. It can lift 48,000 tonnes and it cost £2,300,000,000. There are plenty of ships 382m long but I've never seen one 124m wide. 16 miles isn't far when you're looking out to sea. Should be quite clear from land.

It’s basically a big catamaran / 2 tankers joined together. Usually knocks about with a couple of support vessels too. It’s an impressive piece of kit usually with an impressively sized crew on board too ! Those 400 metre container ships have a crew of 20-30. This can have 500+... plus whatever’s needed on the barge and support vessel which follow it around. It’s probably got a few hundred on board atm.
It’s a lot of money for a ship with quite a limited use and relatively short life span. Would have been amazing to work on something like this though.

Some of the stats are a bit meaningless without context.

This ship is too big for the Suez Canal and Panama Canal. Can get into only a handful of the very largest ports on earth. It can lift the equivalent of 5 Eiffel Towers at any one time. Is almost 4 football pitches long and 2 wide. Can support a crew of around 600 (that’s 25 times as many crew it takes to manage a ship the size of the Ever Given) has to have a specially built (and I believe the worlds largest) barge accompany it in order to transfer whatever it lifts up into most ports as it can’t itself fit, has a second support vessel specially designed just to carry lifting gear and pipe laying gear that it can use to lay a cable you could drive a family car through up to depths of 4000 metres beneath the surface. AND it’s not actually big enough. The company who own and built it plan on building another larger vessel with a lift capacity of over 65000 tons. Thats enough to lift a large container ship (something half the size of the ever given, but still absolutely massive) clean out if the water.

Crazy engineering.

How much to hire it for a week?

I'll look out for it next time I'm on the Prom. If it's going through Glasson dock I hope it doesn't block the Lancaster canal. 😬
Good luck Sooty, Gazette up to speed again. Was halfway down the English Channel yesterday teatime. Currently in the North Sea, off Norfolk, heading up to Scotland

Big ship
