Blackpool v Doncaster Official Matchnight Thread 04.05.21

What a fantastic result ! Now for an exciting end to a strange season . We have to believe we can make it to the Championship without counting our chickens, we must all keep our heads and not get carried away. How the hell we’re supposed to do that I don’t know. COYP.

Five good, five bad - Doncaster (h)

At least we have two weeks now til the play offs begin. A chance to rest Yates and Dougall in particular, those two deserve medals. Turton, Ballard, Garbutt etc. too maybe, and for players to return from injury. We should get 2 or 3 back hopefully. Ward, Kaikai hopefully. Gretarsson and Robson perhaps. CJ, Virtue and Madine no chance it seems. Ekpiteta, Stewart and Anderson need more minutes.

Fantastic performance against a team who weren't that bothered getting men behind the ball which made them potentially dangerous. Great to see Anderson and Ekpiteta back in the swing and we're looking pretty good with the different options now.

No let up against Bristol Rovers. Another solid performance and a clean sheet required. Given where we were in October it would be an amazing turnaround to finish third.

After watching that I thought: no big deal, they didn't worry me and we could have scored more. That's not me being arrogant, I just thought we were in control.
I still had the turnaround fixed in my head from when we played them at their place, nerves settled when the second went in after missing many chances. 🙃

The play-offs were first introduced in 1987 and have been staged at the conclusion of every season since. Since 1990 the winners of each division's play-off competition have been determined in a one-off final. Blackpool are the most successful club in play-off history, winning five times - 1992, 2001, 2007, 2010, and 2017.

Let's make it six.

I did. An equaliser wouldn't have been the end of the world in the context of finishing above a dotted line, but it's the equaliser with time left and a momentum shift that always feels like a possibility. We do seem to have to work extra hard (at both ends of the pitch) for the goals that we score with the point-to-point passing shapes and trying to work preferred angles for attempts.

Thought Louis Jones did well for Doncaster though. Guessing he was their man of the match. Looks a good prospect. Steve Banks was straight over to chat with him at the end.

Would definitely be looking at signing there keeper if we go up. Be a great no2 to Banksy Maxwell, he even got something on both goals, we played well in the final third but this young man was in the way

To sum up last night for me, it was the usual nervous start with a lot of poor control and poor passing but the longer the game went on the better we got. One of the most impressive things was the options each player had on the ball of where to pass it.. Comfortable victory. A key point for us is to get in front and the earlier we can do that the better. It lifts the confidence level of our players up to another level.

Agree with all that 20's including the nervous start - strange how many games we take time to actually get in to.

Just rewatched the highlights, their goalie really kept them respectable. Some great saves.

That second Simms goal, though. That ball was going in even if he had to put half the defence in the net with it. Haven't seen that strength, speed and determination in a Pool striker in a long, long time

Good wasn't it. Helped release some pressure around the game and I would imagine with a crowd in would have been a big moment for him.

I thought he was playing angry after they kept stopping his attempts on the line. I really like what I've seen of Simms for that side of it so far. When he gets a sight of goal he goes into business for himself and will try to hit the target from any angle. It's an instinct that is better than our level so hopefully his all round game clicks for him in time and we'll just be an early mention on his wikipedia page eventually.

I'd hoped we could get an impactful U21/23 loan in January, where you know more about them when they go back than when they turned up. Like we had with KDH briefly last year.

Amazing what a little threat will do, I've always liked him but he's improved in leaps and bounds since he was told he could leave.
I don't think it was the "free to find another club" line, more to do with having a consistent run of games and building confidence. He has played at Championship level so there was always the ability there and having a left footed CB is good for the balance of the team.

The Referee was not good, in fact he was pretty awful.
Why is the standard of Referees at this level so bad?
Only occasionally do we get a good Referee. 🙄

Would love Holmes to get a half against Bristle and a goal yo top it off. Only glimpses of him but I like what I've seen. Quite a big lad but looks pretty mobile and not a bad first touch considering
If we could really set about Bristol Rovers and be 2 or 3-0 up at halftime, THEN I would put Holmes on for the second half. I noticed he seemed to get himself in some decent positions last night and all that was required was the odd good pass.
