Michael Holding's Book

During the test match lunch break I've just watched Michael Holding's eloquent and fervent explanation of why he's written a book about why the fight against racism must continue. He was urged to do it by many sports men and women around the world who have contributed. It's available on Amazon from 24 June. I'm going to buy it and I'm sure I will learn from it.

He made me laugh last summer when he was talking about racism.

He started crying and told his story of the racism he suffered when he was young, it turned out his mum's side of the family shunned his dad's (or the other way round) side of the family as they were a different colour of black.

So the racism he mentioned and he could have told any story from his life, was one where one black family were racist to another black family.
Hilarious story.

You have a very strange sense of humour if that story made you laugh.

And with that comment you are aiming to communicate what?

He was highlighting the absurdity of racism.

It's the same in India, the north look down on the south because they tend to have darker skin, it's pathetic.

But you already know racism is wrong, you know it should be resisted, so why do you feel you have something to learn from somebody writing a book?

Because I was born and brought up in Blackpool and grew up in the 1950s and 1960s barely ever seeing a black face, except those of Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino and Ray Charles on my record albums. I never thought I was born into privilege - I count myself as working class - but perhaps compared to black people I was privileged. I never suffered discrimination except a tiny bit of "Northenism" when I moved down south at age 30 to work in London. (I soon put them right on that.)

To really understand racism I should listen to people who have experienced it. More than that, from what Michael Holding said during the interval, he is saying that the white world has written its own history to diminish the contribution of black people. I want to read the book to consider whether that is true - I suspect it is, and history's views of the British Empire show how history can change over time.

We can learn by reading books. When I've read it I'll post a review on here.

You know that there are some on here who constantly skirt with racist views then deny it.

To say otherwise is blinkered at best, and dog whistling at worst.
I’m pretty confident the only SNEERING is done by the usual self righteous on here.

Sounds to me you are primed to be brainwashed, Grumpy. Be careful what you read into anything, especially that crap about "white privilege".

Someone could have asked him 'is that your autobiography, Holding?'

He would then reply 'yes but its in my bag' 😊

Michael Holding is a great guy and a fabulous commentator, I’ve met him a couple of times once at BCC. I wish he hadn’t added the kneeling bullshit on his book or I would probably of read it.

Wiz

"Skirt with racist views" ?

Who on earth on here skirts with racist views ?

Racism has never been tolerated on here and nor should it be.

Stop trying to tell people that everything that they do or say is racist, what are you trying to achieve ?

I believe we're all entitled to our views, and I'm sticking with mine.

Of course you are entitled to express views Wiz.

Making frivolous accusations should not to be tolerated.

Racism is abhorrent and nobody is suggesting otherwise.

Maybe time to address your obvious concerns regarding racism and concentrate on doing something positive to help fight prejudice, intolerance and discrimination rather than make ridiculous accusations against those whose only crime is that they may hold views that differ from your own.

Did any of you listen to Michael Holding's story about how a taxi driver in London turned his light off when he tried to hail him? Then when he'd passed him he turned his light back on again?
In other words, the taxi driver refused to stop for him. Somebody in the vicinity then advised Holding to let his white Portuguese wife hail for a taxi because they would stop for her because she was white.
You might argue that the taxi driver is entitled to pick up or not pick who he wants. But to me it's just so wrong on every level. And not just because it's Michael Holding who happens to be one of my favourite ever cricketers.
Having said that, if I were a taxi driver the great man would get a free ride very time he stepped in to my cab. 🙂

Nothing frivolous about it.

Nothing frivolous about it.

Just point out all the racist posts and I'll do all I can to have them removed and ensure that action is taken against whoever makes such posts.

Racism is completely unacceptable and that is not up for debate, it is not tolerated on this forum and never has been.

You and others are making it increasingly difficult for people to offer differing - and non abhorrent - views on matters and are stifling debate.

You know full well that insinuation rather than out and out racism is used. Otherwise I'd be doing what I've never done previously and reporting posts.

I'm off to watch the football.

You - and others - are the ones doing the insinuating Wiz, there is no racism.

Football for me too.

There is no racism. OK.

Come on WIz, you are far better than that.

We were in the middle of a conversation and I was saying that there was no racism on AVFTT and not that there is no racism full stop.

I'm sure you were perfectly aware of that but chose to react like you did for effect.

Please point to this racism - ON AVFTT - that you continually talk of.

Put up or shut up.

I've explained my rationale about certain posts on AVFTT. We'll have to disagree.

"We'll have to disagree".

We will never agree on everything and I don't have a problem with that.

Surely we can agree that racism is abhorrent and that it has no place on AVFTT ?

Surely we can agree also that it is unacceptable to make frivolous accusations against other posters ?

Maybe we will just disagree ?

I’m sure it’s a great book, and you’ll enjoy it immensely if you can rise above your irrational hatred of BLM. You may even learn a thing or two about racism from a black man’s perspective.

I give up Eagle Day. I did my best to explain my view to you. It seems you are the one's that primed. Why not tell us what you are really saying?
"but perhaps compared to black people I was privileged." That's the quote that instigated my comment. There is no doubt British born people (white if you insist on it) had an advantage over immigrants at the time, don't need a book to learn that, not if you were growing up in those days anyway. But what concerns me is how "white privilege" is bandied about these days (same as the racist accusations), as far as I am concerned and seen I have no more privilege than any other colour or creed of the same social standing as me.

It’s only irratIonal in your view, in mine it’s completely justified.

But you already know racism is wrong, you know it should be resisted, so why do you feel you have something to learn from somebody writing a book?
It's a complex, multi-faceted phenomenon, with a fascinating history. Why wouldn't we have something to learn? I find this comment astonishing
