Richard Keogh signs

When you have so many youngsters at the club, many of whom have never played at Championship level, you need some experience and leadership. Keogh was a great defender just a few years ago and if he can recapture just some of that and also pass on his knowledge of the league, then it'll be a worthwhile signing. I agree with 62years too in that I'd be surprised if there wasn't some sort of coaching role (or future coaching role) attached to the signing.

He was Derby’s captain. He was MK Dons captain. He’s highly experienced and plays football the way Critchley wants players to play football - out from the back, calmly and without resorting to hoof ball. He won’t demand much in the way of a contract and bare in mind we’re signing 20 year olds with the intention of developing them and this is a guy who signed up to a player mentor role with Huddersfield 6 months ago he’s the prefect foil for that youth.

He doesn’t strike me as the kind of player that will sign for a championship level club knowing he isn’t up to it. There are plenty about.

"It’s like he’s in one big game of Monopoly. For years, he had a decent career and picked up his dough by passing Go. He got monumentally pissed, had a mare and went directly to jail, or the football equivalent. He’s now picked up a beautiful Community Chest card and we are going to take a ** Chance on him next season!

Personally, I don't think it's much coincidence that since he came into the team we have haemorrhaged goals. Nowhere near good enough at this level and if he is anywhere near the side next season then that tells you all you need to know about our ambition.

We need to hold on to one of the old guys imo to give a bit of experience. Of the four old central defenders Keogh is considered by management to be the most likely to play - through ability or fitness. He also has bags of captaincy experience at this level. He's been here for months so the club will know his character, irrespective of the car crash stuff. It's not a bad move IMO.

As long as he's nowhere near the team next season I couldn't give a shite what role he has, to be honest.

He can do cheese and ham rolls for me. If he promises never again to run really, really quickly forward and then stop dead, go round in circles before losing the ball or just running all the way back again, he can stay.

I don't know if anybody noticed, but at the end of a lot of the games I have forced myself to endure this calendar year, you always see Keogh talking seriously / laughing / bantering with opposing players and the officials, as though they are all best mates. Most players just give a perfunctory greeting and a handshake, and maybe have a conversation with a current or past team mate. If I am being honest, it did annoy me a little that he can be laughing and joking after the turgid dross I had sat through. However, I guess that personality trait will be useful as a coach / mentor type.

Lets have it right though, Town could have employed Michael Barrymore as a mentor to the young lads and you would have put a positive spin on it.

I like Keogh and think he’s done okay with us. Nothing spectacular. I certainly prefer him over Sarr. In a decent side he’d probably do better. He made one mistake at Derby - the only one of similar nature throughout his entire career - and they tried to shaft him. This was about money not morals. As a bench warmer and coach, he’ll do a job for Town.

Not up to Championship standard but there are a lot of other wasters at Town, presumably on a lot more money, who haven't shown anything like the same application and effort.

The concern is for his value as a mentor, although we have experienced leaders in the squad in the form of Hogg & Campbell, Pearson seems to be a leader, Nicholls a good dressing room presence so all in all I question whether he's necessarily a great loss.

No loss at all. Experienced veteran but experienced in being a pile of shit.

Gone to Blackpool!

Thank goodness for that. I hadn't realised they were short of clowns at the circus.

Looks like a 2 for 1 signing to me.
Defensive cover ✅
Calderwood replacement ✅
You could argue he falls between the two stools - past it as a player, little or no coaching experience.

Just saying! Calderwood has years of coaching experience. But I'm sure RK will be a good influence in the camp, a good mentor to the likes of Marv, Gretarsson and Casey. It's a position where our players are young will be making a step up in class.

We’ve had experienced CB players in the past that have come in at the end of their careers and ended up as hero’s such as Jackson, Briggsey and Colin Methven. We’ve no depth of Championship experience in the centre of deference and Keogh will provide/coach us with that when needed. Next season will be one hell of a challenge for us in defence and the i’m sure there’ll be plenty of his dark arts that can be shared on the training ground with the youngsters. Let’s give the chap a chance eh?

I was being a bit tongue in cheek. I'm not sure what the current balance of the squad says about the budget though.

Sadler has obviously bitten a lot off. The cost of running a competitive Championship club is not to be sniffed at, I'm very grateful that he's prepared to give it a go. I don't want us to become a big daft money club, personally.
People do seem to get carried away with the notion that Sadler is a fan with a bottomless pit. And if I was being objective you'd have to say that he has spent a lot making the Club professional, and ergo more valuable. After all he's not here to throw money away.

Rather you than me indeed I've seen this sort of signing fail regularly in the Championship.

Nothing personal and hope you guys do well this season.

Welcome Richard a real warrior and leader in that respect a good signing my concern is lack of pace you dont get quicker as you get older but im sure he will be an influence in and around the squad.

I posted not long after Marvin arrived that I thought he was a RB, based upon the positions that he took up. If indeed he is, now with Connolly on board, we’re covered there. Keogh and Viking are a couple of hard nuts; just right at CB for this league.

I'm more than happy with this signing. Plenty of experience, played at the top level and is a really sound person as well.

Hope I'm wrong but he looked finished at MK Dons and his legs had gone. Here for a payday and drinks at the Velvet coaster...

Personally I think it's a poor signing having spoken to mates at Derby - I think he'll be gobby and aggressive and potential do damage to the team spirit the lads have got. Bad apple for me.

"Thank goodness. It was a bizarre offer - felt like we didn’t want him to play (correct) but wanted him to stay as we have zero faith in our coaching staff to mentor players (I can see why) and tried to fix it via a bizarre solution of keeping an old centre half.

Not too keen on the anti-Keogh posts. We will never know but I suspect he had a bigger part on and off the pitch than we realise in terms of securing Chanpionship football for another season.

I'm puzzled as to why he's gone to Blackpool though. He's not likely to get playing time above Lg2 any more & they're not likely to be paid as much as we would. Maybe there's a better coaching option available to him there than there was here.

Did an adequate job for Town when he came - never the most skilful etc of players but put a lot more effort in than many of our multi-million poundwastes of space and didn't let us down.

Hope he has a good year at Blackpool, did a job for us, steady player, was a good player in his pomp. He gave his all in the games he played. As a footballer, solid pro.

Although you would struggle to question Keoghs effort he was, in my opinion, well below the standard of the Championship.
