Blackpool v West Brom Official Matchnight Thread 23.11.21

he's not saying odd things at all. Twice Grimshaw knocked the ball from clearances straight to them and on another day we could have conceded.
Yep, some of his distribution has been excellent in the games he's played, but a few dodgy ones crept in recently.

There was a few mistakes that could have led to goals tonight, Wintle a few where he didn't look and touched it to them Marv with one heavy touch and Grimshaw with a couple of sliced kicks.

It was a ridiculously high intensity game though.

TBF the WBA keeper did 1 to Bowler first half and was there another second half?

There was no let up all game and a real shift put in by everyone.

Some great passing at times, great chances created, just lacked the killer finish, for both sides.

Can't say everyone didn't give their all, must be knackered.

With a player like Bowler you're gonna get a few bad games from him. But when he's on form, the ball sticks to him like glue and he's a major threat for us.
Is he better from the bench at times? Gives him that edge against tired legs.

No matter which way round we use him and others there's always great options to affect the game.

just a thought here, does anyone think that might have been West Brom at their very best, missed / scuffed / ballooned chances and all, and us playing well but still not quite at our peak yet. the Chizz was all "blackpool were hanging on for dear life", and there were periods where brom were ascendent, but apart from maybe a few free kicks and corners we looked relatively controlled defensively and in midfield.

in and around their penalty box we just lacked that little bit of spark that we have in defence and midfield. Brom looked good going forward but i always expected Marv or one of the others to be there to clean up.

In the Grimshaw vs Maxwell debate one more thing over noticed is from corners Grimshaw rarely come for the ball and plucks it out the air or punches, gets blocked off quite easily.

Is this an area Maxwell is superior?

Some keepers we play against catch a lot of our corners.

I think West Brom will improve. The manager only went there in the summer. They have the players. I think we will improve too, but we need better players up front to complement Keshi and Lavery to get among the main play off contenders.

We got a point through showing a lot of guts and character and all credit to them but on the balance of play WBA will travel home tonight very disappointed that they failed to score and win that game.

Ten thoughts, in no particular order:

1. Keshi Anderson was outstanding tonight, the best player on the pitch. Comfortably top end championship standard.
2. All the back four were brilliant. We've now played all three relegated Prem sides.....and have three clean sheets. That takes some doing and shows just how well organised we are. Defensively we're excellent, both individually and collectively.
3. Husband - special praise for him because I had major doubts at the start of last season but he just gets better. What a committed player who just does the last ditch stuff so so well.
4. Grimmy. Got a clean sheet however I just felt he was a bit slow to release the ball sometimes considering we were clearly playing on the counter at times. Also I'm not totally convinced on him commanding the area on set pieces. Has done well deputising for Maxwell but I can see Maxwell coming back in fairly soon. Good Keeper though and a great future ahead of him.
5. Bowler. Had a really poor game, even his ability to run with the ball had deserted him tonight which was strange. I think maybe we should give the opposition some credit as they never really allowed him to get 1v1 with the full back. Great option for us but just an off day.
6. WBA were like a better version of Cardiff i.e. big, physical and bullying. The fact that we crumbled against the bluebirds but didn't tonight is testament I think to how we're growing and improving in this league. Our marking at set pieces and determination to win the aerial battles at crucial moments was far better tonight than it was when we lost that game.
7. Critch. Think he got his line-up spot on and his subs too. Sometimes you just have to say the opposition were pretty good and I think the manager gave us the best possible chance of a result tonight with his tactics.
8. CJ. Great to see him back, and even more importantly we saw glimpses of that frightening pace he had last season, that he looked like he'd lost. Disappointing to miss that chance, and let's be honest he really shouldn't have done regardless of him being out for so long. But it's another option and hope to see him back at his best.
9. Dale. I thought he showed promise but just needs to get his head up to see the best options when in possession. I don't know why but I get the feeling that while Bowler is the more 'flashy' player, Dale I think will prove to have the better numbers if given a run in the team. Not saying he's better than Bowler, just a very different type and we need both sometimes to keep the opposition guessing.
10. Fans. A little subdued tonight which was unusual as it was an exciting game. Maybe a few nerves but it was one of those game where we needed the team to get us going (with a goal) rather than the other way round. WBA brought great numbers and good noise too I thought.

* Pedantic mode on …..No. 2. Bournemouth scored 2 against us, ( but I know where you’re coming from )
* Pedantic mode off ….. yeah, pretty much a spot on summary 👍🏻

Bournemouth weren't relegated last season. Fulham, WBA, Blades. None of them scored against us. Pedantry gone wrong. ;-)

Spot on 20’s, exactly the same at Sheffield United. Bowler is the definition of a luxury player at this high level, in a team that is built on hard work. He offers no cover and in the second half gave it away near our box, then made no effort to track their player. In the first half he bottled 2 challenges and ducked a header, because he was waiting for a challenge.

In contrast, even when he’s played poorly, CJ does make an effort to get back behind the ball, as does Mitchell. When Bowler plays it makes the game more challenging for Jordan.

On the other side the work rate of Keshi was fantastic, and Dale carried that on, for such a smalll lad.
Re. Bowler. I don't like dissing our players but have to agree on tonight's performance. Actually he managed a few deft flicks that set players up but we need more than that.

Cracking point at the end of the day. Nerves cut to shreds at times though, with some of the ‘overplaying’ at the back. One of these days, I’m going to peg it watching my team - I just know I am. 😕 Just for the record, my funeral director’s no, is 01253 420 450

Watching it on Sky (where the commentator was dreadful) the WBA supporters were louder than the Pool fans until the middle of the 2nd half when the North was rocking!

excellent game of football, both sides. West brom are better than i thought they were going to be, i think a fairly balanced game, we probably rode our luck a couple of times but their keeper made one hell of a double save in the first half and there were a couple of other clear cut chances for us, west broms finishing probably let them down, but husband and Marv were just epic. keshi was immense. dougal and wintle both had fantastic games. James did everything you would expect of a full back.

Maybe Madine and Lavery and Madine didnt really work but neither were given any protection from the ref, and lavery was getting kicked, elbowed trodden on and whatever else by their centre halves. Keshi the same, and the ref had the audacity to book keshi for simulation when he was quite clearly tripped.

THe EFL not content with finding shit refs in england have gone all the way to australia to find this twonk.
Oh common, bollocks the ref was fine!

What a decent performance that was against a recent premier league side. The two centre halves where immense and James looked very comfortable at left back. Other very good performances including Anderson who has really stepped up this season.

didn't see it that way at all. Thought the ref was excellent.
Thought he did okay but there was some very basic errors that maybe you couldn't see at your end of the ground. The worst was probably a corner that Keshi was going to head clear at the front post when he got a blatant two handed push in the back, ball went to back post where there player headed it softly just wide of the post which Grimmy watched out - no free-kick or goal kick but another corner given. He was very hard to understand how anybody could have got those 2 decisions so wrong.

Agreed - West Brom had no more clear cut chances than ourselves and their keeper pulled off the best saves of the game.

yeah i noticed that.

Sky were broadcasting the match from above where the Baggies fans were sat/stood - so it most likely would have drowned out much of the Pool fans chants to some extent. They were definitely one of the more noisier away fans though.

Lost some respect for West brom fans, booing at full time because its 0 0. Do they think they just come to Bloomfield Road and take 3 points. Both teams gave it everything at a relentless pace, they spend millions we spend thousands but every man on the pitch gave it everything.
They were chanting: "Sack the board, sack the board, sack the board"

I really wonder what's going on there, they're 3rd behind the likes of FULHAM and BOURNEMOUTH. Before the season you'd say the three clubs that'll be competing for automatic are the three clubs that are sitting 1st, 2nd and 3rd so its a strange one - we're newly promoted but sitting 9th and have held our own against Fulham and Bournemouth, so if its based on this result it really is a strange one but perhaps they think they should be walking the league!

It's staggering how well we're doing, its really took me by surprise - I think we held our own for large parts of last night and when I think about it we had the better chances. There is no denying we rode our luck a little bit and had to rely on some amazing defensive displays but if that wasn't the case of a newly promoted side from League One vs. a yo-yo club, just relegated from the Prem then it really would have been an amazing display.

West Brom had almost twice as many shots, but we had more shots on target, I can only think of one chance of theirs which you could class as a decent one whereas we had a few. If it weren't for an amazing double save from Sam Johnstone (who went to the Euros with England may I add) and Hamilton needing to shake some rust off his shooting boots we could have bloody snatched 3 points last night.

We certainly don't look out of place in the Championship, some of our players have adapted unbelievably quickly. I can see us finishing around where we are now (which would be some going on your first season up), Critch has just signed a long term deal so the future really is bright. Up the bloody 'Pool!
