Transfer strategy

We've recently failed in bids for Brannagan and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and they both came straight from Prem academies/reserves. Shouldn't this be where we're targeting, in order to find the next gem? I know we have done for loan players, but could it be potentially more rewarding for the club? Bowler is a good example, and going further back we signed Wellens from Utd, Southern from Everton etc. The problem with signing players on loan is that if they do well, bigger clubs come along and snap them up (see Ballard and Simms).
I'm not sure it's an area we've focused on enough for permanent signings, especially if we're looking to make a profit in the transfer market in order to re-invest. Dominic Thompson is from a prem club of course, but with respect to Brentford, I'm thinking more about the reserves/development squads of Liverpool, Everton, City, United as they're on our doorstep. Dan Grimshaw is a good example of the kind of permanent signing we need to make imo.

I think the issue is we need players to come in who are ready to come into our first 11 and improve on what we already have.

You can pick up released players from prem academies who can slot in a lot more regularly.

Bowler is a good example but I do think it’s a lot harder to find players championship quality being released, prem sides will know they can get a fee and usually sell before they enter the last year, like Arsenal have with Ballard

Well it's a good point, these academy players would more likely slot straight in to a league one team than a championship team. But I do think that players of the quality we've been targeting exist in prem academies/reserves, and I bet they'd be cheaper and easier to obtain in many cases if we offered significant sell-on percentages. I don't know this for a fact obviously, but I reckon it's worth exploring. It doesn't seem to be an area we look at much, which, when you consider the quality of Grimmy, is a bit puzzling.

Sadly these development squad players are on decent wages and aren’t really interested in playing competitive football in our division on a permanent contract basis

They want to be staying at their ‘big club’ with the amazing training facilities, in the hope that one day they might be recommended to the big boss and get 10 mins on a premier league match at some point and a chance at the big time. Otherwise they stick around drawing the dosh for four years or whatever.

Yeah it's criminal really, I made the point a while ago that by the age of 22, KDH only had about 25 league appearances to his name. For a player of his quality it's shocking, although he seems to have made it now. But there's many good players that don't and waste a massive chunk of their career.
Having said that, it's players like CB and the lad from Sheff Weds we need to be targeting by being the first club they move to from their Prem one.

@OUFCFanNotInPeace You appear to have strayed on to a Championship forum. It's ok, it happens from time to time, no need to apologise. The league one forums are about somewhere, I'm sure if you google them you'll find them. I'd offer a link but I deleted them all from my favourites some time ago.
Happy to help 👍

It's OK, if I stay here for the season, I'll soon find myself back on a League One forum by the end of it.

I doubt that.
Look, I get it - you want to experience what it's like in the league above and you won't get that on your forum. I just think it isn't going to do you any good mentally in the long run. It's like when buying a house, and you can't resist looking at properties that are just out of reach financially. It'll only lead to disappointment and dissatisfaction with what you end up with.
My advice is resist the urge to visit a championship forum, it's for the best.

We missed out on Simms but Broadhead scored 1 in 2 average last season, if we are after another striker surely we should look at him.
