Manager for League One

Has to be someone with experience!! Not some random coach from a Premier club, surely not worth a risk.

We make the wrong appointment this time we could be playing League 2 football the following season
Nathan Jones for me - might not be everyone’s cup of tea but he builds bloody good teams on a budget. I think he might be tempted given we are similar to the project he had at Luton.

This won’t be popular but Karl Robinson has taken Oxford as far has he can and either way , there is soon to be a parting of ways. He has attitude, experience and I personally would love an opinionated manager rather than the grey dross of late.
I was told by a member of his family that we offered Robinson the job last summer before appointing Appleton. Could be bullshit obviously.

I doubt he would go from the Prem to League One.
No Premier League team will touch him - failed twice at ‘big clubs, same goes for the big hitters in the Championship. He is best at medium sized clubs like ours and I think he might be tempted by a rebuild with a decent budget.

I’d be happy with Manning but Leam Richardson is a good shout.

My worry is we won’t be an attractive opposition in league one on the back of this truly shocking season so we will be scrapping the barrel again.

I wouldn’t be against Nathan Jones either, he’s a bit of a pillock but you can’t argue what he did at Luton.
Why would we not be an attractive proposition in L1 ???? We are extremely well run with a stadium that’s more than decent and will soon be (finally) completed. Just because the recruitment this season has gone wrong, in what is a notoriously difficult league to sign players on a comparatively modest budget, it won’t have much bearing on next season. The new recruitment team will get an opportunity to start afresh with a new head coach who is part of a longer term plan.

I think he will be able to get a job in the Championship on a lot more money.
He might I agree though equally he might not - he is seen I think as a one trick pony at Luton - decent and bigger clubs than us in the Championship will be wary of taking him which might play to our advantage

Please elaborate on extremely well run? This season be it managers/recruitment/performance on the pitch and the amount of injuries we’ve had due to a crap training ground and facilities make me question that statement.

We've seen this season how the Championship is also a managerial merry go round with opportunities always popping up. You never know though. If he wants to get back in very quickly then he might be interested. I doubt it though.

Time will tell but whatever happens a crucial appointment in the summer we must get right

I don't think the injuries, particularly hamstring injuries are anything to do with the state of the training ground pitches. I think it's more to do with conditioning and how they warm up. Also, throw in the relentless nature of the Championship and being such a poor team in possession, which in turn means we're having to chase round after the ball for large parts of the game.

Indeed and I'm not sure I can trust the board to get a managerial appointment right after they opted for Appleton? I hope Chris Badlan or someone else will be responsible for the next appointment. I hope someone asks this at the upcoming meeting.

Needs to rebuild his career after Southampton
Yes, he had a poor time in the Premier League, what was it, around ten games? I imagine that wouldn't mean he would have to drop down to League One having done so well for a long time in the Championship. If he doesn't get a job in the summer, then after about ten games clubs will start sacking managers and he will be in demand.

I think some hard questions need to be asked - interesting that Sadler is fronting up to this one which is good as he has lots of questions to answer. Will be interesting to see what he says

It will be very interesting! We were told that Appleton was 'unanimously' chosen by the board. That makes me extremely concerned if that same board are choosing the next manager.

Nathan Jones for me also ...
He won't drop to League One. He did so well in the Championship for a long time. When was the last time a manager went from the Premier League to League One?

If we somehow manage to stay up then maybe, but otherwise I can't see it.

Some insane names thrown about here.
Look at who the board have targeted / hired before. It’ll be someone like Mickey Mellon, Phil Brown etc.

Richie Wellens for me, I've said it ever since we sacked Grayson. Never pulled the trigger and I'm not sure we will or whether he'd be interested now.

The injuries are not down to the training ground or facilities that’s simply not true. There’s also a new training ground on the horizon so I don’t see your point on that score. Performances on the pitch are obviously down to recruitment and a terrible appointment in Appleton. I did discuss recruitment in my post didn’t I ???? Financially the club is very well run and until Critchley buggered off and then we had a poor summer window, the way the club was run wasn’t in question from virtually anyone.

Always worked with a small budget did great with Newport, tries to play progressive football and doesn't appear to jump ship easy so could be one for the long haul
But is he good enough? Walsall aren't exactly flying. Mid table League Two to hopefully promotion chasing in League One?

You’ve raised a great point which was something I was pondering the other day. Under Critchley, the style of play was more possession based and I guess the training was focused more around that and was less intensive. Enter Appleton and the intensity changed and the demands on the players changed accordingly. Another example of why appointing him will be up there with some of the most monumental mistakes Blackpool FC has ever made.

That is absolute bollocks

To be honest I would like someone like Evo or Wellans but there isn't a cat in hells chance

We are shopping in league 2

No chance with Evatt, not sure about Wellens. I imagine we could get Leam Richardson or Leam Manning. Richardson has a title win on his CV, Manning overachieved and played good football.

I'm just not sure I trust this board to appoint the right manager after Appleton and I hope that Chris Badlan has that responsibility now as something needs to change. Hopefully someone asks at the upcoming meeting about that.

No, but at this point the club needs to be planning for League One and the Championship. That would include potential managerial appointments and looking at players.
Yes of course a new manager has to be brought in which ever league we find ourselves in next season, but it was the seemingly inevitability of your o/p that downed me. There’s 12 games left yet, twists and turns and all that, who knows how we’ll end up.

We're Blackpool we can be different. What about a female manager? Sarina Wiegman Dutch women's national coach. Or Duncan Ferguson? Neither can be worse than what we've got. What you really need to do is assess your playing staff and find a manager that can play in a style that suits the nucleus of what we have. Otherwise, you end up with a bunch of misfiring misfits.

Tbf the OP says that we need to plan for both L1 and the Championship. I think with each game the need to plan for both becomes, unfortunately, greater.

Gary Bowyer/ Richie Wellens/ Rob Edwards/ Paul Simpson/ Ian Evatt... Nathan Jones/ Scott Brown/ Derek Adams/Steven Schumacher/ John Coleman /Joey Barton... there's 11 names for a kick off...all experienced at that level and could do a good job...

I’d be happy with 5 of em🍊⚽👍

I meant the headline of the topic tbh, anyway fair do’s, there’s definitely loads of planning to sort out in the coming months, obviously let’s hope the board get the right man this time.
