Jack Charlton RIP

Just seen this. Absolute legend.

Some great stories about Jack from the Ireland days. One where he supposedly would go in the pubs and run up a tab, then pay by cheque knowing that the landlord would frame it and hang it behind the bar rather than cash it!

Cracking player, the perfect foil for the classy Bobby Moore. RIP.

one of the ultimate legends as a player.

Total straight-talking manager. Used to love him. England missed a trick not employing him.

I remember going to a Sportsman’s dinner at the Tangerine Club when Jackie was the guest speaker. Late 80’s. He came and sat with us after his set and was great company.

A great player and a massive character in our beautiful game. As a member of the '66 winning team he will always be a legend.

RIP Jack

I saw him head a goal v Blackpool in 70/71 season at Elland Rd. He never liked playing against Ray Charnley in the 60’s according to what he told Sir Jimmy Armfield as he found Big Ray a real handful.

Great character, a proper centre half and leader and a charismatic man all round. Always sad when a little piece of our lives pass away.

Remember him more as Rep Ire manager than anything else, but he was so likeable you ended up rooting for them. RIP Sir.

RIP Jack. You and your fellow players have been special to many of us from that wonderful day in 1966. Plenty of tales have been heard saying what a decent human being you were.

Another classic from Italia 90. He was doing some pundit/interviews during the infamous West Germany v Holland game where Rijkaard spat at Rudi Voller. Cue half-time discussion with the panel and then over to Jack who was at the Ireland team hotel.
‘what did you make of that Jack?’

‘Well if he’d have spat at me I’d have chinned him...’ (delivered in that thick Geordie brogue)

RIP Jack.

Remember watching him when we beat them in 1966, a few months before WC.
We called him the Giraffe.
It was a 1-0 win for Pool and almost secured our safety to stay up.

Met him once in Altea, my old man used to winter there and we were having a few drinks in a bar with a group of my dads friends, we were the only ones in the bar and when he came in he noticed one of my dads friends was from his neck of the woods, he sat down and shot the breeze with us for half an hour or so, a thoroughly charming man.

Absolutely devastated this morning and had the pleasure of meeting him at the Lord Harewood dinner some years ago,and what a very nice humble man he was. I'd campaigned for years to get our South Stand named after him and always felt LU didnt really embrace the guy in later years, considering he was the clubs biggest appearance holder.

A quote from one of his interviews here that sums up him and his career: " I'd actually been to see Matt Busby at Man United with the idea that I might go there. He asked me to hang on until the September - he was going to have a look at a lad that was coming through before he went out and bought anybody. And I said, "No - no way. I've caused havoc at Elland Road because I was coming to see you. It was you who told me not to sign a new contract with Leeds... I'm going to go back and apologise to them and sign a new contract and bugger you - I'm not coming here!" So I went back to Elland Road, saw Don and did exactly that. The attitude of the trainers to me after that was completely different. Everything took off from there."

RIP Big Jack

One of the Legendary characters of the game. Maybe not as equal as a manager as he was as a player but he certainly had a good go at it and didn't do too bad! Looking through photos of him online I forgot that Leeds once played in red!
Another one of the World Cup Winners gone 😪
RIP Big Jack.

As others have said I am too young to have seen him play but really only remember him as manager of Ireland. He led that country like a band of brothers and will probably go down as Irish football's golden era. Last 8 of Italia '90 and 16 of USA '94 with limited means is a brilliant return.

Great character of our game and World Cup winner. Not a bad life. RIP Jackie.

He was a guest when the club held a 40th anniversary dinner for the World Cup win, Alan Ball and Sir Jim were also there.

There was an embarrassingly bad comedian booked who bombed and Jack was the next speaker. I think he was getting heckled and threatened the audience to "shut up or I'll bring that bloody comedian back" 😂😂

RIP sir

A giant of the game in many ways. love the pic of him on the pitch smoking a fag. Seem to remember we had a few who smoked back in the day.

RIP wor Jackie

Yes a tower of strength for Leeds and England and an extremely successful Irish manager.

I seem to remember he said he kept the names of certain players in a little black book for future retribution.

RIP.

Had the pleasure of meeting Jackie when he came to our club ,North shore utd in NZ ,dot think he was too impressed with the football on show and kept asking where the best place to go fishing was .Great footballer and great guy,R.I.P,

To a generation of Irish people, Ireland reaching the 1990 World Cup was the time the nation arrived on the world stage. And provided a huge boost to a nation that was struggling. As a Irish writer said today “ at a time when Ireland was dominated by unemployment, emigration, a heroin epidemic and the Troubles, Jack Charlton was the man who showed me things didn’t have to be Shiite”. World Cup legend and Irish legend. Thanks Jack and RIP
