January 2024 Transfer thread.

I think if we sign anyone this window it will either be a loan or a young player with potential. I think they will wait to see where we are at the end of the season and see where we are with Ekpiteta, Husband, Lavery, Connolly, Virtue, O'Donnell etc out of contract. I think we will see quite a bit of churn again

We started this campaign with both Dougall and Trybull in the squad, two players who would be deemed very good very league one. I feel that we are now much weaker in that position and could do with someone to better what we currently have.

In general we have quite a few players who are good enough for the squad, but not good enough to be starting regularly for a promotion chasing side.

Trybull was never really here though, was he? Weird one. We signed Norburn to replace him. At least he shows up and plays, and as long as he sticks to what he's good at he's a good L! midfielder. If Morgan keeps his levels up he's at least the equal of Trybull and Dougall. And, crucially, he wants to be here. For now.

Are you going to be subjecting us to your Fantasy Cryptic ITK bollocks for the rest of January? Can you not go and play with your model train set in the attic instead until the end of the transfer window?
Big words for a little guy. Know your place fella

Someone you know is coming in but you have to ask yourself why wasn’t he here on Monday so he could train with his new teammates all week? Behind the scenes is still a ways from being a well oiled machine.

My sense of the club from a bit of a distance this season is there isn't an obvious urgency around achieving promotion? More about getting back on track? Presumably there's work going on in the background on the training ground and east stand developments. And maybe some longer term thinking about how the club sustains itself. I doubt Sadler will continue to put £5m a year in. Especially if it only allows us to stand still. We don't have the funds to compete effectively at a higher level, and 5m investment per season is nothing in Championship terms. 🤔
That would be madness. Sadler does seem a little less than forthright but plodding along in the old division three is a waste of everyone’s time and his money. The training ground is a bit of a mirage. It might attract talent but it won’t produce enough to satisfy our needs. It never has for the bigger boys who have had first rate facilities for years. We might not like saying it but we are a breeder club who should be aiming to bounce between the premier league and the championship.

Had a tour of the stadium today apparently 🤫

I also get that feeling of we are happy where we are. No urgency to sign up our better out of contract players or bring in a wow signing. Having said that I make no criticism of Simon Sadler as the club is safe in his hands.

Why is the club safe in his hands? He’s loaning monies to the club so if we make the prem on a wing and a prayer like the Oystons he won’t have lost a penny? A higher integrity score yes, needed maintenance done yes but apart from that no difference in new training ground, new stand or league status. I’m leaning toward positive in his regard but I’m barely beyond neutral at present.

Our chances of making the Premiership are zero. In the 13/14 years since we achieved the impossible, much has changed. The Championship is now our best bet and to do that and stay in there will take some doing. There are some really big boys who operate in the Championship.

Better the devil we know than ‘orrible set of buggers we used to know.

James Scott gone to St Mirren on loan but permanent in summer. Could be a replacement for Keanu Baccuss who contract
runs out this season ? We have shown interest in this guy in the past ? yes no I dont know, but would be the type of signing
we would welcome ........

As Huddersfield, Luton, Bournemouth and Burnley will attest to.

Hmmm, you could well be right with your assessment here although I personally am hoping that we’re still going for it this year as I feel the task would get more difficult with time.

To compete in the championship it’s clear we need the new east and new fans, the former is achievable the latter is where our problem lies.

Bacchus is away at the AFC Cup until the middle of next month

Free agent list for central midfielders is dire... Josh Onomah or Matty Longstaff anyone...?

Didn't think so...

It'll have to be a loan then.

Doubt we'd go for an academy player this late on in the year. Brighton recalled Weir as soon as it was apparent he was surplus and players like Dan Gore are going to go to clubs who guarantee playing time.

Perhaps an out of favor Championship midfielder on loan then?

Ebou Adams from Cardiff? Andy King from Bristol City? Jay Matete from Sunderland? Dominic Ball from Ipswich?

Most of those are unlikely as I'm sure their clubs will want them at a minimum starting every game.

So the question is who would be willing to loan us a player that is almost assuredly going to be a squad depth piece?

Permanent deals are definitely off the table as whoever we're dealing with will charge a premium.

Carlisle are 10 points adrift and almost assuredly down, but doubt they'd let go of Moxon for less than 500k, which isn't a bad deal IMO, but wouldn't be good value when he'll be a free in 6 months.

Interested to see what rabbits the club pull out of their hat.
Keanu Baccus out of contract this season !

I think Norburn was a decent replacement for Trybull and you could see a midfield or Dougall, Norburn and Morgan being a three in a promotion chasing side. With Dougall going though I think we are now lacking quality. Virtue, Carey and at times Morgan look average for the league.
