Charlton - 18 games without a win

Amazing what a mess Michael Appleton left behind there. Didn't quite realise how bad their form has been.

With Cheltenham in form, 2 games in hand and just a point below Charlton, it seems inevitable that they will slip into the relegation zone soon.

How the mighty have fallen. I feel for their fans, not a bad bunch overall.

SPS said 2pts dropped from our visit to the Valley 😱

Also 2 pts dropped at home to them and our top scorer knackered by them.

So much for the boy wonder coming in to sort them out who many wanted here as manager.
Three draws when they might have lost them before that recently given the opposition. So they might be OK and go on a run after they get their first win under Nathan Jones, depending on when it happens. And then they'll be looking at a different story off a fresh start next season. They've got the ability in the transfer market to attract and sign the better players in league one like Alfie May, whereas we and others don't. They just don't seem to have been very good at managers.

Was convinced they were going to get their win against us straight after Appleton went and I think Neil Critchley was as well after they equalised and gained confidence.

Similar to the mess we were in when he left, couldn't buy a win hardly after that and confidence was shot.

Here's a thought, maybe the problem lies deeper than the manager.
Probably, but they have and signed some good players. Appleton had them doing alright for a bit then a suddenly inexplicable slide in form, going off a cliff.

Then confidence gone and a group that contains talent and should be doing far better is in or near relegation.

It does sound familiar...

He'd probably be alright if he found a smaller L1/L2 club where they needed him more than the other way around like at Oxford and Lincoln and if he got a second year at it, but he just seems to be fall guy for hire now.

Andy Scott is the one getting pelters at Charlton as he's running the football operation for the owner and sounds like a chancer. He was at Forest when they were signing anyone with a pulse and even some without.

I am by no way, shape or form an admirer of Appleton and would go as far to say he definitely isn’t managerial material.
However I wouldn’t really blame him for the mess at Charlton. The team were already struggling when he took over on 8th September last year and was sacked on 23rd January after 10 games without a win. So he’s managed for approximately 20 League games and a couple of cup matches.
I reckon he could hold the record for the most short term managerial stints in football and yet people still employ him.
Can you imagine his interviews
“So Michael, can you tell me why you terminated your last job?
“Alright r kid. I was sacked, wasn’t I. They don’t like Mancs down there, alright.”
“And can you tell me why you terminated the one before that?”
“Listen right, I was a bit unlucky with the results thing so I got sacked from there as well. Alright r kid”
..........and then on and on it goes.
So how can owners and supporters say he interviewed well? Baffling.

He's coached and managed (or taken charge of a team) in every league and if you're an owner or CEO wanting to make squad cost savings then he's got good contacts for Prem U21 development players on loan. And he obviously doesn't mind taking a job knowing it might not be for the long haul now. In a small industry I'm sure he's well known.

I do think if he got a clear run at it he'd probably be OK in league one/two with the right environment where they might as well give it a go. But it's never going to be much of a thrill ride with Unlucky Alf. Young players being given a platform to play seem to like him as they know it's just for a year getting their heads down and following their own career path. The more experienced players less so when he starts talking about making changes.

From watching their Vlogs he lost the dressing room very quickly and in the game, he got sacked after the players all stayed out on the pitch for a long time and 20 minutes later he was clearing his desk out.

Nathan Jones will do a good job at Charlton, absolutely no doubt about that.
Got that first win at Derby from 1-0 down last night so you can see a bit more of how it's maybe started to come together off those stabilising first few games now. It's not been an easy run of fixtures he's walked into.

Jones might be a lot of things but when he gets his message into a team over a period of time they work their bollox off and make it tough for you to play them and it's a good way to get everyone onside.
