Critchley too cautious and conservative - discuss

Why oh why do we not throw the kitchen sink at it when we are losing with 10 minutes to go away from home. Seems to me overall we are just not going for it enough. Ekpiteta up front might just have rescued a point. Instead we never looked like scoring. Last night not one shot on target. Critchley has had a long time to sort these issues out and apart from the odd good result it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

fine margins, not a shot on target, everytime we start ok then lose all the momentum.
, the game drifts away,he stands arms folded and looks lost,he can't work out what is going wrong,we have one of the best squads in the league,if it wasn't for grimshaw we would be further down the league

"...doesn't seem to be getting any better."

Seem?

Declined fom eighth to ninth in the table.

Why didn't the coach attack for a point?

Critch set to join a procrastinators' club?

Improbable.

Never get round to completing the form.

He certainly seems to be away from home. A bigger failing in my view is his repeated inability to react tactically in-game when things are clearly not going well. Cods away and Posh at home when he threw caution to the wind in a sh*t or bust situation but other than that it’s simply personnel changes on 70 mins. That’s a real failing.

There have been a couple of exceptions but generally this season if we go a goal down we lose. Not only do we lose but we looked devoid of spirit and any sort of plan. I would love to hear what Critchley has to say if this was put to him.

He has'nt got the players to play this system, playing away from home 1-0 down what does he do ? Bring Hamilton on to stretch the game he's not the answer and never will be, thats all we have. There is'nt a player in the club who has real threat and pace apart from Joseph who came off .I know we have Dembele at 20yrs but we are to dependent on him and other teams identify with this. We have our wing backs playing to his system but many teams have set-up against us to stop that. 22/23 outfield players ? 2 Wingers/attackers short in my view, the squad employs Wingbacks in his system nothing else. Also the lack of quality in midfield and at CB for me shows we give the ball away to much. Peterborough play the right way and will progress IMO.The season will soon be over and he will look back at what he has achieved with this system fuck all.

I know I'm getting old and out of touch with modern day definitions of success, but this quote from Brendan Rodgers after Celtic's last night thrashing of Dundee sums up what I would like football to be about.

Rodgers said. "We're here to win, but Celtic is about playing football that gets the supporters excited."

There have been many times when you could put have Blackpool in that sentence. It has even happened two or three times this season, so I'm not convinced the players aren't there if given their heads. When you get to your mid-seventies, you realise that too much emphasis on safety is over-rated - get out and grab life. Applies to football as well.

He’s always been like that to an extent bar the mad start he had in mk.1, but clearly Villa and qpr being absolute turd has affected him.

Being a football and rugby fan having Critchley, Gareth Southgate and England rugby head coach Steve Borthwick in charge is so frustrating.

The three of them are like peas in a pod, safety first, no risks taken, boring as f@ck managers.

I'd change the three of them tomorrow.
What is wrong with today?

So why has he gone with a system that needs a lot of technically good footballers when we haven't got them?
We have some but not enough to make it work?
A good manager looks at what he has and makes best use of it, to do anything else makes no sense!!

I'd probably say being too stubborn is his biggest weakness. He seems adamant the best way to win away games is with long ball after long ball. When you look at the games we've won (Pompey, Bristol, Posh), they were won by playing on the counter, positive attacking football that was a variety of short and long. Tuesday was awful, just like it was at Cambridge, Burton, PV, Stevenage and Cheltenham. Brain dead stuff really, the fact he can't or won't see how poor it is, is quite criminal for a supposed elite level coach.

We have the players
Watch the 4th goal against Bolton again.
Joseph charging out from the back with Gabriel.
Perfectly weighted pass to Kaddy bypassing their midfield.
Kaddy instant control could take the shot but looks up to see Gabriel haring into the box.
Again a perfectly weighted pass that Gabriel finishes with aplomb.
From defence to scoring within 10 seconds.
Amazing what can happen when the handbrake is taken off. Gabriel showed he is over his injury with that run and goal at the end of the match, his reward? To be taken off for tactical reasons in what was a must win match.

That was counter attacking football, we do have some players for that. I loved that goal.
However Critchley said he wanted to dominate possession, I'm guessing in the manner of a lower league Man City where you keep the ball, pull the opposition out of shape, then hit them.
We don't have enough defenders and midfielders good on the ball to do that. Peterborough have to an extent we don't.

Dominating possession is not pushing the ball sideways and back, eventually being closed down so having the pass it back to the keeper. He then boots it up the pitch.😳. Rinse and repeat ! That happened all night on Tuesday.

To pull them out of shape you have to burst into life and go forward. All our passing sideways does is allow the other team to get in shape and pick when to close down. We don't turn their players anywhere near enough.

Agreed. We pass it about like we are 3 0 up when the reality is we are 1 0 down!
Something needs to change.
