Apter I am sure will have a part to play next season, but is anyone else good enough as a fringe player?
Tayt Trusty looked promising before his injury
And I rated Jack Clarke

Jack Clarke plays for Sunderland

Jack Moore they recalled from Chorley just as he was gaining experience, made a sub appearance v Barnsley in the EFL Trophy and then nothing since.

Possibly not at the moment.
The problem I have in giving a more informative answer is I'm not seeing the young pro's whilst they are out on loan except for clips of Rob Apter which are available to all of us.
It's easy for me to say (and I have said it many times) that Critch has rarely given our kids a chance. They have had cameo appearances. Apter, Moore, Mariette, Trusty, Donkor & Miles have all had minutes and none of them have looked particularly out of their depth.
There is of course a world of difference between a cameo appearance and playing 90 minutes on a regular basis.
PS.
I'm looking forward to seeing next seasons new scholars because what I have seen so far they look to be a good group.
PPS.
Jack Moore's recall is a strange one.

Agree those you have listed looked ok for the minutes they managed.
At this, stage in their career can go either way, so realistically hoping Apter plus 1 make first team.

Even in the darkest of days I can remember Chris Beech and Mark Bonner making their debut in , possibly the last game of the season?? Beech hit the bar from 30 yards and both went on to have half decent careers.

Why the reluctance to throw youth in, let them feel the real game and grow?

Can't all just be hot showers, chicken pasta and strap on GPS vests.

NC was that youth and they brought in a Gary Brabin to help him to protect him. Now he has Mary Poppins.....

....any opportunity

If you remember Critchley's last match at Peterborough when we got caned, there were appearances by about 5 of the youth set up, exactly as Beech and Bonner were blooded.

The fanbase was outraged.

Bit different. The team had given up at that point (and Critchley) plus 5 youth is too many, they need some exp. around. The whole setup got slated.

And if you remember the last EFL Trophy group game this season he threw six in against Morecambe, one of them ended up with a broken leg off a loose first touch and he said after he probably played too many at once. Do that in a proper match for league points and Critchley will know he's on a hiding to nothing with it but he's got to try to balance both demands on him by his bosses.

Imagine any of them being put up against Portsmouth's big bruisers last week and what the likely outcome would be.

We'll know when we've got U21s who are anywhere near the first team as they just will be. Like Kylian Kouassi bypassing the pretending bit. And even with him you can see there's a development gap where he's missing a full season in L2 first. But at least he can put himself about on a football pitch and has been able to make an immediate impact. With the injury it's probably going to be another who needs a pre-season reset now, like Kyle Joseph, but there is something there to work with, even as a little side project.

Poor old Critchley he never quite manages to hit the Goldilocks range.

Too Hot - Too Cold
Too Young - Too Old
Too Many - To Few
To Me - To You

C&P from the "Recruitment" thread.
Just as a PS to my post #7. (recruitment thread)
There are plenty of clubs with 18yr olds in their squads. At the top of the pyramid Liverpool are currently the best example. Blackburn another
good example. It's not a team of 18yr olds but it's a measured introduction. So if you get your recruitment right at 16 you will hopefully get some oven players at 18. You then miss out completely that difficult gap at 18+.

A question for you then Insy, about that younger (Maybe 17/18) year old age range.

Is it realistic to think that us (as a club) given the recent history are going to be bringing players at 17/18 into the first team stat hi is time?

As I see it, to have players who are likely to be good enough at that age, then you’re going to have needed to pick them up much younger … And we simply haven’t been up and running and serious about youth development for long enough yet to see those kind of results..

Maybe you might get very lucky with a released 16 year old that you pick perhaps, but chances are it may be a few years yet before we see first team players who are good enough at 17/18 and haven’t been swallowed up by someone else??

We have done it not so long ago with Bright, Telford, Boney, Bonnington, Cameron and a few others in the "doldrum years" but it was more a case then of no other option. So it's not impossible but doesnt seem likely at the moment. There are travel time limits for kids commuting to training (the younger, the shorter time) but that works against us geographically because they can all still get to Manchester or Liverpool. I do think though we are working hard at the youngest age levels to achieve that aim and what I've said about u16s to 18s at the end of this season backs that up, IMO of course.

I'd put our youngsters in the 1st team squad. Maybe if we did that we could attract some top youngsters who could see a believable career path. Look at Wales RU. Got hammered in the Six Nations but I bet they don't next time. Have faith in youth because it doesn't remain youth for long.

Surely by your logic though we'd need to replace them with more youths as soon as they're no longer youths in order to attract the next set of youths to replace them?

Still have my doubts if Apter can step up 2 divisions from League 2 with Tranmere to the Championship with us next season

AVFTT fans have short memories when it doesn't fit their argument.
