That was awful

I know we won, but not sure how anyone can clap that at FT. They were bad and yet really should have scored to take a point. We create nothing, 1 shot on target in second half and that was a FK in added time by Carey. Get rid of Critchley, the football is woeful, almost becoming a chore having to watch this every Saturday.

I thought we did OK first half in certain aspects. The 2nd half was up there with the worst performances I've seen from us. I love Dembele but even he had a stinker. The strikers are garbage, they all bring unique levels of 'garbageness'. Some can't run, some can't head, some can't pass but none of them can read the game or score. That's not to say we're providing them with chances but when they never hold the ball up and link with our midfield it all becomes very difficult. Roll on Tuesday, I can hardly wait. 🙈

That was an appalling second half. First half was decent and controlled but second was as bad as I’ve seen.

The players deserve the blame. It’s the poor passing, lack of movement and indecision that’s holding us back.

That is not a group of players that would get into any squad, let alone first XI, in the top 6 except for Grimshaw,Dembele, Gabriel, Coulson and Ekpiketa.

I’m very pleased we didn’t hand too many contracts out earlier this season. Big clear out necessary

Do our players take an oath before every game, thou shalt not shoot. I know the goal was a good shot but how many times do we create a shooting opportunity only to try an extra touch then inevitably lose possession, so frustrating.

Yep awful 2nd half. Strikers are abysmal. Even when Dembele put a ball through for them, Beesley just didn't read it at all and rightly so got an earful from Critchley and was hooked a few seconds later. Lavery is total tripe too and Kouassi's only saving grace is that he's young and maybe will improve. Movement is non existent and they don't even come short, just stand there hoping for a big boot forward and even then dont win anything. Just imagine we had 2 top strikers with Dembele, they'd score a hat full.

Really enjoyed the first half . Front foot attacking football the sort of stuff I’d like to see week in week out apart from the fact we only scored one no complaints at all good stuff .

Second half was a hard watch . I honestly thought we d get another two at least at half time

. I can only assume he told them to defend the lead and we almost got unstuck when they hit the post .

We got the win though so no problem .

To say it was awful all game is inaccurate .

Said this since Christmas- players not good enough. None would get in Critch’s 2020 promotion team.

I don’t think Dobbie with TC alongside him could get a tune from this lot.
💯 This is a team of players who are bang average and being 8th most of the season reflects that.
Eighth best team with the eighth best players.

Kyle Joseph did the best of the 4 when he came on. He at least looks comfortable when the ball comes to him. Decent run for the free-kick that created our only shot on target in the 2nd half.

There’s not a chance in hell the two that started could’ve done that.

Just imagine if we had a competent manager some of our players might look quite good .

For me, we played pretty well first half. The set up worked and we played direct and then had some nice play of the pair of target men. Ok, we didn't finish them off, but we put plenty of pressure on and Carey almost squeezed a second in with that tight angle shot.

I had no complaints. Ok, the 'quality' wasn't always there in 'key moments' to use Critchspeak but fuck me, it's league 1 - what do we actually expect? Main thing is we create some pressure and we did.

Then ..

Monk changed it a bit at halftime. We fell apart. I cannot help but think that Critchley cannot handle in game tactics. We just did like for like changes as opposed to actually alter anything until Virtue came on and we pulled the midfield into a proper 3.

It was poor.

I think there's a degree of hyperbole in describing it as the worst game ever etc, but 2nd half we struggled in a way that is all too familiar.

I generally agree with most of your posts, but, respectfully, not this time, mate!

I'm sure I'd be lambasted for saying this, but I actually think Critch has a good eye for players, but no idea how to coach or use them, which obviously is a big problem (especially in the chosen formation).

Funnily enough, I think he'd be a great director of football - which, frankly, ain't helpful right now!

On CJ, when was the last time he cut inside and had a shot. That used to be his thing. He never does it any more. Weird.
I agree, although in times gone by he has played much further forward as he no doubt should. He is without doubt a confidence player and that has disintegrated in the last few months.

Anyone who comes on here regularly knows I am a CJ fan but I accept he has been under par recently. That said, his pinpoint pass to kouassi is what led to the goal so I'm happy to call that out 👍.

In the first 15 mins Dembele was tearing them apart. Why did we stop using him?
I think, like most teams do, they got tighter on him. For once, we'd set up in a way that made that no real issue because that just left space for Carey who scored and nearly got a second. Kaddy did assist the goal tbf.

Second half, once we'd lost the twin towers up front we couldn't hold the ball for 5 seconds let alone get Kaddy in the game.

Why didn’t he start last week vs Wycombe ? We
Could be 3 points off the play offs today
To be fair and I am the world's biggest fan of Dembele, he's absolute magic, he looked way off it in the two games prior and seemed shattered or carrying a knock. His touch was weirdly bad.

For me, a bigger problem is 'why don't we have anyone else tricky/skillful' ala Dale or Apter. It's Kaddy or bust and for a side so reliant on him, that's problematic.

And if you don’t cut in for the shot, what’s the point of ‘the system’? It can’t rely on a byline cross as his right foot is powder puff
Exactly. He actually did put a couple of ok balls in today (when he wasn't letting the ball run out of play bless him 😭 )but he never does that thing he used to of just charging at the box and absolutely smashing it. He was quite good at that. I can't remember the last time he did it.

We’ve given our worst player technically who has the footballing intelligence of a watermelon and the heart of a pea, 2 and a half years extra. A footballer who doesn’t want the ball. Briliant.

Whoever was part of that needs torturing.
Don't know what you mean AK. The way he stormed into that 50/50 near the dugouts was pure Bravehart.

That wasn’t the worst of it for me.

He’s an attacking player by trade, who doesn’t want the ball. He was playing one touch in our half 1st half. Played Pennington a hospital pass and then clumsily fouled. He’s the last man back at our corners, he got the ball at 1 point and just quickly got it back to Grimshaw. No confidence to bring it down, look forwards.

2nd half, he kept making a dummy run but the ball would go to where everyone thought he was going bar for him. Then when the ball comes out to the edge of the box, to strike it at goal, he looked like a bag of nerves and just passed it back.

I don’t think he’s had a remotely decent game for about 5 months? I know he scored at Bristol but he was still poor.

I watch him and think he doesn’t want to be there.

That was fcukin awful to watch in the 2nd half and was the worst I’ve seen this season. How the fcuk CJ gets a start is beyond belief and then switch him to LWB by taking off our best player today thinking he’s going to play any better is taking the piss!

I'm guessing he was as surprised as anyone when the contract was offered. He strikes me as anything but egotistical. Timid, more like. His training stats and levels of compliance will be a wet dream for Critchley though.

That was beyond belief, unless Coulson was struggling...
CJ completely bottled a 50/50 second half; nothing new there.

It just epitomises the madness that we are only 6 points off the play offs. Had we picked up a single win from all those no-show away games we'd have a chance now. Frustrating isn't the word.

Sadly in a world of algorithms, Critchley and Sadler will probably be sat round the table, analysing their numbers saying "a good solid season". The fans who attend the game know different. This season was an opportunity completely wasted in my opinion and I fear that will become evident next season.

Obviously, I hope that I am proved completely wrong.

Great post that Pete. If only we’d had a manager with more ambition for the club the players and the fans we would be in the playoffs and feeling positive without a shadow of a doubt. Instead it all feels functional and hollow and we have next to no chance playing like we are, home or away.

For those of a vintage, it’s very reminiscent of the Allan Brown season where we relied on Dave Bambers goals to struggle to mid table playing like shite
