Calum Macdonald

Anybody know what the situation is with Calum Macdonald? Is he injured or just not fancied by the management team? I dont remember seeing him over the last two games? I always thought he looked a good prospect. Having said that Shaw has looked great at left wing back during pre-season and looks to be getting better all the time. Think Antwi has also stood out. I can see some saying Hamilton has not impressed, I think he has been a real threat in all the games I have watched, more so than Kai Kai who has been disappointing in my opinion.

He was declared unfit but not sure if it was an injury. I think MacDonald said he didn't feel physically right??

Interesting how from a young age you can tell which players would run through walls and which seem a bit injury prone and nesh. I can see McDonald being a bit Coidy - versatile and talented but will never cement a place because of on going 'physical' problems. Just my reading of it.

If I’m not mistaken this is his first or pretty much is first problem injury/physicality wise - bit rash to make such a judgment based on him missing a pre season game. He was probably pretty much fine to play, just no point having any risk in your players in person season.

Let's hope CM isn't treated like Danny Coid.
Danny was a talented player, who could have become a top right sided defender, but the needs of the team at that time meant he was played out of position more than he should have, and that's how he picked up many of his injuries. However, that versatility also shows what a talented footballer he was. He definitely 'took one for the team'.

A strange observation on CM. I can’t recall him missing through injury problems. Last season he was quite consistent when picked to play...

I lived Callum macdonald being in the team last season. Couldn’t believe it when grayson dropped him after the performance he put in against Peterborough. He’s a hard worker with plenty of pace.

Not sure how playing out of position affects how many injuries you get.

Not sure I'm keen on that. He looked decent for us and surely would only improve under Critch. Combined with Husband seeming to be more favoured as centre back, we must surely be bringing someone in? Can't be relying on Shaw and Husband

Have to trust the coach but this seems a very strange on for me unless he has another very good replacement lined up

That is a strange deal for me, I trust Critchley on what he is doing at the moment and we might have a replacement lined up but I don’t think this is the right decision for me. Could be proved wrong though 🤞

I think Husbands now a shoe in at left back, with Shaw as cover there. Thornily can play there if needed.

With Shaw impressing it’s given us three players for one position(Husband, McD and Shaw), someone needed to go to free up room for a central defender or midfielder.

I would have liked to see more of him but I think on balance this is the right thing to do.

I think this is more to do with limitations on squad sizes and trying to free up some space, especially as we haven't moved on the likes of Devitt and Feeney. We have others that can cover LB, including Shaw. As others have said, it also gives CM regular game time

I've liked what I've seen of him, but we have other players who can play the position and presumably NC rates them more highly. He'll do well in L2, it's a coup for Tranmere.

I really like McDonald so a bit surprised really.

Maybe the rumours about this Accy/Fulham lad are true? Plays centre back and left back So would give us options.

James Husband is and always was first choice LB and rightly so.......Calum McDonald is too lightweight still for me had one really good game against Peterborough and (such is the way with a lot of Blackpool fans) suddenly became the best thing since sliced bread.

He's OK and will benefit hugely from a full season in L2, but let's not pretend its a massive deal that he's gone.

Very odd decision this one ? Every time I’ve seen him he’s done well.

I as others prefer husband as a centre back too.

I wouldn’t be impressed is shaw was too be first team LB no offence to the lad but don’t think he’s ready yet from what I’ve seen.

Really hope someone is announced imminently

I’m quite shocked at this move, I thought he was a very good wing back and great cover for Husband , with the potential to make that position his own !

I bet NC has some players who he really wants in the squad, some he really doesn't, and some in between. And he wants to bring some key players in and has to lose some to do that cos of the squad size limit. Maybe MacD is one of the players in the middle, and he's decided to lose him so that he can bring in a player he really needs. Tranmere presumably were keen to get him. We have players NC would like to lose but nobody wants to take them. We do have Husband, Thornily and Shaw who can all play left back. Lose something to gain something you need more. MacD hasn't exactly stood out in the pre-season games if you ask me. Steady but nothing more.

Suprised by this, I thought Macdonald would have been one that NC could have developed this year. Thought he looked decent when given a chance last year. Good luck to him and who knows, some league experience may help him become a better player for us when he returns. Still strange given lack of obvious cover at that position. Shaw has looked decent pre-season so far and perhaps NC is planning on giving him a chance. Notice in the friendlies Shaw played the whole game against Barrow and came back on against Port Vale when Nuttall got injured so played 80-85 minutes of that one too.

It could well be a massive deal if we're short, being exposed or ineffective every weekend at left back. These decisions define seasons.

Thornily at left back, Jesus I hope it doesn’t get to that point 😂

I don’t think it will but he can play there.

We’re basically getting two players for every position, we didn’t need McD unfortunately, he’s a victim of the strange transfer policy we pursued 12 months ago and also the emergence of Shaw.

I'm surprised but I'm not shocked.
I do now wonder where Hubby will fit into the team?
Nathan and Hubby are completely different players, obviously.
Nathan is the attacking option and Husband the defensive one.
Listening to Critch's interviews he seems to rate them both.
If we are expecting a team in the Liverpool mold then Nathan appears to fit the bill but with McDonald leaving there's no obvious replacement fitting that system.
It maybe Nathan at home and Hubby away?
One thing's for sure I can't read Critch's mind yet (reading Larry's was a piece of cake) and I'm not a lot nearer to picking my own starting 11.
Interesting times ahead. 👍

Always liked and rated McDonald, but the fact two managers with different styles seem to have decided he's not for them gives me a bit of pause. Hopefully the loan for Opoku can come off

It definitely won’t be Shaw at LB........
Left midfield maybe.....
Critchley deserves said it was his preferred position....
A Crainey type player hopefully coming in
