RIP Diego

Whatever your thoughts on him, What a footballing genius. Legend of the game and certainly top 3 of all time (If not the best)
For me, he was the greatest. He single handedly made cr@p teams great (Argentina & Napoli). That second goal against England in 1986 was stunning when you consider every England player wanted to break his leg. RIP Diego

Obviously not a favourite with England fans, but what a player! For me only the great Pele bettered him.

I think the napoli achievement was more impressive than Argentina. They had a very good team in 86, he was unbelievably good in that tournament.

It goes without saying that he was a great player regardless of what anybody thought of him as a human being.

Whenever the Pele/Maradona debate comes up I side with Maradona and many suggest that's because I am young and saw more of Maradona.

I always offer a very quick and lazy reason for siding with Maradona:

If you took Pele out of the Brazil 1970 side and put me in his place, Brazil would have still won the World Cup.

If you took Maradona out of the Argies 1986 side, Argies would not have won it no matter who replaced him.

Rest in Peace

God Bless

RIP

I think Napoli messed him up. He also got far too much stick for the Hand of God episode, he tried and got away with it, no different really than Lineker diving against Cameroon four years later and Shilton should have got there before Maradona. We also probably should have at least got to extra time in that game but Robson brought Barnes on too late and Lineker missed an open header.

RIP Diego, tremendous footballer, bettered only just by Pele. That performance against England, hand apart, was magnificent.

I doubt many Englishmen will mourn his passing, he also had a dark side to him besides the "Hand of God" goal.

That said, no one can argue with his genius as a player, one of the top four of all time for me alongside Pele, Cruyff and Best.

RIP Diego.

Very sad and of course remembered for giving Steve Hodge a gold plated pension (they swopped shirts after HoG goal)

Shiltons ball all the way btw but RIP Diego and what a fantastic player.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Imagine getting out jumped by Maradona!

IMO the greatest player ever.

R.I.P.

His footballing ability cannot be denied cheat or not. The docufilm on him was very interesting especially the period whilst he was in Napoli where he had to leave pronto otherwise the horses head was destined for his bed.

Saw him play for Argentina against England at Wembley, he was only 17 at the time but what a player he was even then.

I was 17 in 86 and watched the quarter final in the pub. I vividly recall the 2nd where he danced round half the team, for me the best part of the goal is the 1st part where he receives the ball in his own half with his back facing the enlish half, he spins round and beats a couple of player's. When the goal went in i sat in stunned silence for 10 seconds then stood up and applauded, it was out of this world.

The ‘Hand of God’ was a perfect example of the term ’viveza criolla’ used in Argentina and other South American countries to win by cunning means, at football and other activities. Read a book years ago about Argentinian football regarding the Atletico River Plate v Boca Juniors derby, and the most delightful way to score a winning goal would be by foul means in the last minute!

Cheat or not, every player does it, at times, and you have to hand it to him he was one of the world's greatest of all time.

RIP Diego.
