Brighton v Blackpool Official Matchday FA Cup Thread 23.01.21

Overall I’m disappointed, I don’t feel we really had a go at them. We were hanging on in the last 10 minutes and looked tired. Maxwell kept us in it and some poor finishing from them it could of been 4 or 5. That said a thunderbastard that no goalkeeper in the world would of saved and a ridiculous deflection won them the game. We lacked a focal point when Madine went off and the game petered out for us.
Thunderbastard 😂😂

Overall I thought we did ok but result was about right Raggy winner but if you don't shoot at goal you wont ever score . disappointed that we didn't create more after a promising start to the second half , we just didn't look like creating anything . Worst bit was the BTSports commentator constantly reffering to our colours as "Orange" 😲😬
loved the bt commentator at the start of the game when he said its brighton to get us underway clown we were kicking off

Well Madine is in the team to score so he’s doing his job. One of the few I’d say. His agent will be happy with that goal all over the telly no doubt and where we will be without him remains to be seen. I’m not confident it will be the promised land any time soon.

I'm a bit surprised that so many posters think we did OK, even under the circs.
We showed no fight!
I can understand the difficulty of a set of players melding together when regulars are out but so we're Brighton, with some of theirs being non-regulars.
All this, pass sideways, play across the back four; It's going f**king nowhere. Every match commentator we get can see it. It's becoming so bloody obvious. We're a team without fight.
Madine played well...but with little service. Ekpiteta...I wouldn't want to receive a pass from him for fear of ending up crippled. All the midfield were content to play sideways and backwards. Virtue...he was poor when I expected better. Gabriel...a decent performance but little of his work resulted in good shots or headers.
I'm sorry but if Critchley can't put some thunder into us he may as well go back to playing tikka takka with his kids.

It was always going to be a bit of a struggle with key players missing. Reading some of the comments here you'd think we'd just gone out to Morecambe though, not a PL side playing at home with lots of options on the bench.

Putting the negativity aside, what did people think 3-5 at the back as an option? It's not for me but I do think the two wing backs should be in our best side, either at full back or pushed on to wide midfield.
Agree about the performance and expectations.

I think 3-5-2 is the way to go, with a designated holding mid. In L1 I think it would release Dougall and Ward, and would translate into more threat / goals.

I watched, but not as thoroughly as I would a league game.

We had crap prep.
The players who came in from the cold and in the case of Thorniley, the deep freeze, had crap prep.
It would have been a huge shock to win.
If they keep finishing like that they'll go straight to to Vaux Conf.
The subs were poorly thought out
We lost.
No problem.
On to Tuesday's and Saturday's postponements, hopefully.

At this point it is probably worth trying, short term at least until we get some key players back.
We have 3 strong centre halves and full backs in Gabriel, Mitchell & Garbutt who would be able to get forward more.
The trouble is I don't see where CJ fits in to a 352, playing him on the right would leave us far too exposed.

There just seems to be too many changes needed to make it viable long term, especially when Critch has been so loath to switch from 433 to 442.
One of the main reasons to bring Calderwood in will have been his success at making teams hard to beat, is it likely his belief in 4 at the back will be abandoned?

Felt Thorniley had a good game, maybe Critchley's statement was a rocket up the arse.

Wouldn't mind seeing him feature again!
He did ok today but there’s just something about him that doesn’t say footballer.

It’s quite unnerving to be rooting for games to be off for fear of playing.

I certainly think the two wing backs have more about them in an attacking sense than Kaikai or Lubala at the moment for instance. More discipline and more threat. A better final pass would be a bonus no matter who's playing though.

I have to say Robson is a league 2 player, no better and Williams is a decent holding midfielder who was clearly not match fit, but would we miss him if he left? Virtue was surprisingly poor, he didn't get in the game at all and I have been hoping he will be a big player for us, but again, I'm not sure, not is that formation with no quality around him in midfield.

I thought the defenders all did really well today and Maxwell was outstanding, although I still don't think Husband should be our first choice left back. Garbutt did okay, the 2 up front got absolutely no service whatsoever so Madine did brilliantly to get the equaliser. The subs were totally anonymous, Sarkic needs to go asap, poor young Simms was thrown in as the lone striker with no service, he had no chance.

Feel a bit flat this evening but the Covid players not being available spoilt the contest.

Our best three players were Maxwell, Gabriel and Thorniley for me. The fact Madine scored has to be respected but he did little else.

Lets be fair though , they are premier league and we were heavily weakened...I think we have learned a lot and some players are clearly not good enough
Agreed, but Madine and Yates have to live off scraps as the midfield was totally lacking in creativity and drive.

We just gave up, seemed happy to lose 2-1 to me. We may as well have gone for it, 2-1 or 6-1 and you’re out. For me we seem back to accepting that small club mentality that Holloway talked about when he first came in. Happy with a day trip to a premier league ground and a narrow defeat, didn’t we do well. Forget tactics I wonder what kind of teamtalks are going on, is Critch they type to give chest thumping inspiration or just a meek and mild mouse ?

I think your last point is the key. We’re clearly suffering now from injuries and illness and the more postponements we can get, the better.
I’ll also concede that some players were bound to have struggled due to lack of game time. Some will still not be good enough, but they deserve the acknowledgement that it’s not easy to come in out of the cold and be sharp.

"the more postponements we can get, the better". Where has this attitude come from? Maybe getting last season cancelled? Seems a lot of people now prefer us to remain unbeaten by not playing matches. Don't get it myself. That's why we have back up players in each position.

Surprised at all the criticism tbh as you've got to account for the situation. I totally agree it was a very poor performance but we were without Turton, Gretarsson, Ballard, Ward, Dougall, Anderson, Hamilton. Seven first team regulars, away at a Prem side. No league one side is going to pull that off I'm afraid. Thorniley and Williams playing for the first time in months. Virtue just back from a long lay off. Robson playing for the first time in weeks.
If you were expecting us to compete, then really you need to reassess your thoughts about how good we are!

i cannot see how anyone can say Williams is a holding midfielder when hes never close to the ball or even the action. A holding midfielder should be able to break up play, and move it on. Ward and dougal break yup a lot of opposition attacks, Virtue was doing that last year, and Robson was doing it at the beginning of the season. Williams is never anywhere close to the action to be able to break up the opposition attacks.

im not usually so critical of players i can usually see the potential in them, but Williams is . . . . . . . . i just dont have the words.

Purely practical reasons superhands. We’re at breaking point in the squad. If a postponement helps us regroup a little then I’d take it.

AVFTT at its best this thread. We've been knocked out of the Cup by a worldly strike and a deflection. Scored a great goal. Simms already getting slanged. I thought under the circumstances we did ok. We now need to move up the leag

Some people on here think we are a premier league team they way they criticise almost everything and everyone give the lads a break we just got beat off a premier league team

Williams just hovers very deeply looking like he’s looking for the ball. It’s a skill of sorts that allows you to have a few contracts put your way before teams finally give up on you.

On postponements we are going to have alot of home games in a short space of time anyways so it makes sense to get to them with something resembling our best team and try and get in a successful late run than go ahead and just chuck them away playing crap.

very hard game to watch, we were seriously under strength, and as others have said beaten by a very cruel deflection, by a PL side. Maxwell, Gabriel and i thought Epki apart from his one moment of madness all had good games, under normal circumstances that was a game to be won. ho hum.

I genuinely have no idea where the level of expectation we're seeing has come from.

No way am I going through 11 rows of comments, so I will just put forward my thoughts.

Class told in the end, they were the better team.

We lost to a lousy deflection and an unstoppable goal.

I did feel that we gave them too much respect at times and should have gone forward at every opportunity instead of inviting them onto us or passing backwards when a forward pass would have been better.

Otherwise, it was a fair result and considering their position in the football pyramid was not an embarrassing result.

Now we can concentrate on the league.😁👍

What if the opposition have problems? Should we get it postponed until they can also fulfill the fixture with their strongest team? All teams will get injuries and suspensions over the course of the season so you win some, you lose some, it's part and parcel of a season.

Kept away from this board mainly as I miss too much of the games fiddling around posting on here. My summary is we were poor & created little apart from the great move for our goal. But we were still in the game & lost to a wicked deflection. We need Dougal & CJ back. Can’t comment on the new lad as he had about as much impact as Yates.

Well I watched Chorley give a better account if themselves last night against a better Prem team. It's that level of fight I'm after. All the slick passing in the world is no good if there's no purpose behind it.

So you think its perfectly ok for Shrewsbury to have had games called off for one covid related player, yet Blackpool who now have 6 to have succumbed to the virus shouldn't be allowed games postponed.
May I remind you that Blackpool had two players out with covid going on 3 with woodburn at the time but carried on their league obligations.
I personally think 6 warrants postponements

But those backup players are either being slagged on here or are being told they can move on.

Maybe you don’t see the purpose the shape of the team and the individual jobs each player does . We are I think a team in transition which is better than last season by a mile and patience is needed to help us get where we all want to be onwards and upwards

all other teams are cancelling games as they should do remember this virus is highly contageous and playing when so many of the squad have the virus is dangerous as those who tested negative might test positive the next day due to being in contact with the infected players at the time of testing

Yep. I can see that angle, but this isn’t a normal season for anyone.

No need for the first sentence but the rest makes sense.
