Blackpool v AFC Wimbledon Official Matchday Thread 06.03.21

A kick from Maxwell, needlessly into touch on the halfway line and 30 seconds later they've scored.
The only mistake he made today and it cost us. But why aren't we scoring more than 1 goal, that always gives the opposition a chance no matter how well or bad they are. The lack of possession in the second half was horrendous.

Hard to take as we clearly didn't take the opportunity to press on several times, but given we could have conceded early and had our usual absolute nightmare the draw feels like a blessing. If we'd managed to keep the 3 points it would have been very lucky, and would probably have saved them from the kick up the arse they seem to need.

12th. This league is so poor that we are still in with a shout. However, if we cannot learn to impose our game on those coming to BR, we might as well take up netball. 1 - 0 is the most dangerous score in football.

I totally get giving CJ 60 minutes. However, with hindsight, if he had been fresh to come on in the second half, and we could have kept pressure on them, different ball game. It has been said many times today, but unless you have a world class defence, the best form of defence is attack.

I expect NC to hold his hand up at the presser.

Keep hearing about these games in hand, they don't mean anything unless you win them. Is anyone confident that we will win them when we can't beat teams battling relegation? I've been sceptical of playoffs all season, now I genuinely don't think we have a chance.

I expect there'll be a bit of a meltdown on here tonight. We are still missing a midfielder capable of linking our attacking play. We have no-one with that passing ability you need, and that is really costing us badly. We are also still missing that striker that can really bully defenders, especially without Madine. We have decent players but are missing key components that make a capable side.

The playoffs is still possible but we just aren't doing enough in games, even those we win, to suggest to me we've got what it takes. We were second best to Crewe on Tuesday - the same team that Lincoln have just dispatched 3-0. That's the difference.
Still time to change my mind but there still an awful lot of improvement required.

Two games a week even with the rotation (of which I don’t like) is just too much I’m afraid. I think it’s time to except we won’t make the play offs. There’s always a turning point in a season and this game might just be ours.

Can you imagine us facing Ipswich in the playoffs home & away?
We’d get dîcked, again.
Even Lincoln would destroy us.
We need a complete change of mindset or we can write this season off.

Not think husband better Center back
Husbands a bit of a wild card, you never know what he’s going to produce, played well at centre back and left back but is wildly inconsistent. If we’re aiming for promotion (probably next season) if he’s in the squad it’s as a back up.

I think Stewart has been ok but not world beating...Virtue has been slow and off the pace...he can score goals but needs to get more involved...CJ nowhere near fit...time to swap him now...we have 5 subs and NEED to change it up...Maxwell is our man of the match for me
Thought both Stewart and Virtue were abject today, but saying that, not many players came out of today with much credit.

Agreed CJ is miles away.

Thought Maxwell was trying to gift them a goal second half.

Abject tactically today, Wimbledon looked miles fitter than our boys too.

It is clear that there is blame today and that rests with the manager for trying to defend a 1 goal lead against a bottom of the table side for 30 minutes. I am fuming, it was awful tactics and we got what we deserved.
It's painful and petulant.
I've found myself reading the board less and less of late because the toxic nonsense is all encompassing on here.
So the opposition scores a late equaliser, let's haul everyone over the coals and demand a lynching.

I can't wait for us all to be back in the ground where we can scream a load of bollocks whilst everyone around us wishes we'd shut up, sit down and stop making a tit of ourselves because of a mis-placed pass.

It's tiresome.

It's hard not to be fuming about the fact we've tried to sit back and defend a 1 nil lead against bottom of the league. All our subs were super negative, no one to blame but ourselves
No one to blame but ourselves. Don't be so daft. The blame lies squarely on the head of Critchley. 1-0 up against a bottom 4 team & he makes all those negative, defensive subs.

That’s exactly what I said to my lad (too many times goal kicks go straight into touch). Surely with just a couple of minutes to go it’s time to keep possession, even if it means playing the goal kick short.

It’s the manager for me. I can’t pick a player who played badly today. When we scored we were starting to get joy down the wing playing some nice stuff. Sometimes the best change is no change

You really can't blame any of that on Kaikai, in the moments he had I felt he did alright but what is he meant to do when the tactics applied after he came on was everyone sitting behind the ball playing 5-4-1?
He's a passenger. He didn't touch the ball for the first 5 minutes.

We just don’t seem to be able to get that 2nd goal to put games to bed, it’s happened a lot this season.
it certainly keeps you on the end of your seat watching it!
We can’t get a second because we don’t try to. One will do as far as our super coach is concerned.

Both Virtue and Yates were goosed and were contributing zilch when they came off . Problem is we have no ready replacements up front. Hence complete change of shape and tactics.

The reality is that Pool are already showing signs of being jaded. The crisp one touch football has gone. Two games per week for the rest of the season will take its toll and the play offs are unlikely this term now I think.
I think that's fair comment. Still some hope but too many players look out of touch. If Jerry hadn't chased every ball we'd have lost that comfortably.

I know what you mean Tangerine but it's not 'blame ourselves'. It's blame Critchley. He's the conservative bloke who'se instilled these overly-careful, back to defence, find another route, don't surrender possession, don"t attempt anything risk tactics. We're drowning in ordinariness. The man's a plank!

Very frustrating but Peterborough and Portsmouth lost to bottom 4 teams so it's obviously not just us. Bringing Dougall on worked for about 5 minutes but then we seemed unable to pass the ball out of the back. We should be able to starve the opposition of possession with the team that finished that game.
What a difference to last Saturday.

Usual idiots prattling about the manager can do one. It's L1 in a shortened season - stuff like this happens.

I am not blaming the players 66, you can tell they put everything on the line for 90 minutes. I was referring to the tactics applied, we've thrown a win away by sitting back against bottom of the league - infuriating stuff!

It’s not the defence generally that’s the issue albeit it cost us today. We are so missing Madine and the confidence he gives the attack.
But when Critchley starts bottling it on the hour why are his assistants not stepping in? That's what Calderwood came in for, or is Calderwood leading the bottle?

Re Stewart, he was outstanding today, absolute class on the ball.

Not the strongest defensive line up but with players out and games coming thick and fast you'd have Wimbledon down as one where you might get away with it...we didn't.

Frustration for me is not keeping the ball better especially when we went a goal up.

Strangely CJ returning doesn’t seem to have helped, too often we look to just lump it long for him and give possession away too easy. NC fucked up today with his selection and substitutions and I hope he learns from that as it was two points dropped. They deserved a draw minimum.
How many times have we already said this !

I must have seen a different game to you. Gave the ball away 3 or 4 times allowing them to threaten our box.

laying off 5 yard balls sideways is the basics you expect from a footballer.

Literally no one was outstanding today. Thorniley and Ballard were the only ones that did there jobs fairly well. But there were numerous errors in their games.

I think it's so frustrating because you can see the potential of this team. We just seem to be lacking the garnish to become a force in this league.

I can't quite put my finger on what it is though, is it Critch needing more time to gain that experience to have the nouse how to see us over the line? Is it a lack of quality in the final 3rd?

For the second time in two games we went 1-0 up with two strikers up front, and both ended 1-1 whilst only one striker was playing. I'm really brassed off when it happens. When Simms went off in both games, I knew we would struggle to win the matches. Other defensive changes allowed both Crewe and Wimbledon to come at us. Them lost four points could well be the ones that have cost us a chance of being in the playoffs. I feared the same after the dreadful performances at Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury, but we got over them and came good again.
