In these difficult times of pandemic, furloughs and general lack of work and money, As I found myself scratching around trying to find the price of a pint of milk and a packet of fags, I got to wondering just how much time and money I wasted back in the day on "Seasiders Clubcall" I think it was part of my downfall!!!
The fact I even still remember the number speaks volumes..
Was it just me?!

Funny how I saw that number and knew straight away what it was. How times change.

I remember working on a political party conference in Blackpool and found myself guarding a well known hospitality venue. Found an empty office with a phone and listened to the whole 90 minutes of Blackpool v Barnet on the club call line. Won 3-0. The phone owner could afford it I’m sure! Think Steve Morgan scored one of the goals.

If I remember correctly you could set a wake up alarm with the talking clock, seem to remember using it when needing to get up early when going on holiday

When I visit my Mother she still nags me if I phone before 6.

Remember spending a fortune from a public phone from NEC listening to Burnley v Pool in 1992. Out of range for Radio Lancs orRed Rose.

You could ring dial a disc, was it 16 ?
I know if you did it from a phone box you got about 3 seconds of the song free before you had to pop any money in.
It was the same song on a loop all day.
Have distinct memories of doing the phone box trick repeatedly to keep getting 3 free seconds of Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street.
What a bloody wasted youth 🥴

I used to have the Green delivered, or should I say posted, weekly when I first moved to Yorkshire, as there were so many matches I couldn't attend, until they stopped printing it.

haha that’s a good shout Kev and yes my mum and dads phone bill was so high but my sister got the blame for ringing her boyfriend all the time.
The club call lot used to keep you on ages before they told you any worthwhile information haha!!

We used to collect the "discs" that were lying all around Cheswick & Wright's silencer section of the Squires Gate factory. They were a perfect fit for the the phone boxes, can't remember if the slots were 2p or 10p. Free calls to Dial a Disc, mates in another phone box down the road or to random numbers from the phone book. We didn't have a phone at home until the very late 70's and then it was a party line.

I used to get Mondays and Wednesdays Gazette delivered to me when i lived in Northampton, just for the match reports.
Felt a bit sorry for the paperboy.... it was a hell of a round he had!.... but id give him a good tip at Christmas! ;)

Party line. There was a misnomer if ever there was one. Neighbours shouting at each other to hang up.

I ran up a fortune listening to clubcall over and over when we signed Andy Watson Superstar from Carlisle, such was the absolute thrill of signing a player for money, even if it was the supporters own!.
