Is it too early to start talking about summer signings?

With so much to play for in the current season, I feel as though it might be a bit premature to start speculating about summer recruitment.

However, there’s certainly a few players I’m already thinking about that we could possibly sign for a steal in the summer. One in particular is SCOTT TWINE, out of contract at Swindon at the end of the season, decent player at this level who I think Critchley could develop further. Also knows some of our former Swindon boys in Yates/Anderson.
Has anyone else been doing a bit of individual scouting as the season has gone on?

There's a couple of Crewe players I liked, Charlie Kirk didn't do much against us but he's got stats off the chart for a left sided player. Their little lad in midfield looked very intelligent as well

Up front, I like Oliver at Gillingham (if Madine goes, option of presence, can't beat a big beanpole in this league as a plan b...) I thought Vassell looked excellent and I also really liked Hanlon at Bristol Rovers who was a Yates-esque nuisance with arguably a bit more flair than Jerry but not as good finishing.

I can't remember seeing many others and thinking 'ooh, I wish they were ours' and it being realistic.

Lad in a hat/bandage/skullcap who played for Charlton was superb but I doubt he's in our price bracket.

Yeah I'd say a bit premature mate. Who we might sign all depends on:

Which division we'll be in next season

Who's out of contract and leaves

Who's still in contract, we sell (if any) and how much we got for them

IF we got promoted it'll be interesting to see how Sadler reacts regarding the available transfer pot

Brentford reportedly in for Twine so that’s probably a stretch.

Suspect it all depends on the division. No doubt plenty will look at the progress of Yates, Ballard, Gabriel etc and see it as a good prospect, even in L1

If we done go up, it’s going to be a busy summer, with bids coming in for a few of our players. If we do go up, it’ll still be busy, looking to offload some and bring in better quality, but we won’t know until we know where we are.

As a Championship side 😉 we can look at raiding the players of the season in Div1 and also the young Prem players that are close but not likely to break the first team for the big clubs.
Also raiding those relegated from the Championship. Rotherham normally haven’t got a clue of what decent players they have so there would be a good place for a bid or 2

Think we were in for Twine but he strung us along.

I'd be looking at getting Simms and Embleton signed and doing all we can to get Gabriel, a chance if we get promoted and Ballard for another year on loan if he isn't in the Arsenal first team thoughts. Somehow I thingk he will be an ever-present in their back 4 sadly for us but great for him.

I would like to tie Kaikai and Mitchell down to long term contracts and then see who they have on the radar.

Gabriel would be my first attempted signing promotion or not.

I would imagine that our recruitment team will be looking at players for both scenarios, so we don’t have to worry about that . 😜

Let's not get wrapped up in that.

No way we're getting Simms imo.

Sure the club won’t think it’s too early to start looking at possible targets, so sure we can talk about it, but doubt we will get many (if any) correct🤣 BFC runs a tight ship now.

Joe Piggott of Wimbledon looked a real handful, decent first touch, good in the air, an eye for goal and no slouch for a big man. If we do go up and Madine goes he'd be a fantastic replacement.

I don't see Simms as a PL player any time soon.
If he was good enough he'd be playing now.
Of course a couple of good seasons with a Championship club could change that and make that club some money, so potentially an investment.

Surely that's the way Everton look at it. Keep him on, loan him out and probably flog him for 10 million in the end ideally. Why would they give him to us for peanuts now?

Whilst I stand to be corrected I think he is out of contract at Everton 30.06 2022 so he's not going to earn them £10m.

If we go up I would definitely be looking to sign KDH on a season long loan. Highly doubtful I know with Leicester looking like they'll be playing in Europe next season but he would fit in perfectly with Critchball.

They'll offer him a 2 year deal. If he was 22 I'd expect them to cut their losses. As he's not, I'd expect them to give him time and review it later.

The 'if he's good enough he'd be playing' argument seems a bit like you want to sign him so are making the argument fit.

If we let Shaw go as 'if he was good enough he'd be playing' I think you'd see that as a mistake.

Maybe we could get a season long loan but I'd be really surprised if we got a permanent deal. It makes no business sense for them and to compete with their youth prospect wages, we'd have to make him a top earner, if not *the* top earner.

No I'm not saying that about Simms to make it fit my argument. I just honestly don't think Simms is anywhere near being good enough for the PL based on what I've seen of him.
On the Winkey issue the problem with all our former stars of the u/18s is they never get a chance in a competitive first team match playing with the best of the first team players. The nearest we got was pre-season where they certainly showed potential.
I'm not disputing Critchley's knowledge of their talent and he's not currently in a position to take risks.
I can only compare them with Kyle Joseph, as an example, who got thrown in due to the unique circumstances that Wigan found themselves in and is now attracting interest from Newcastle. What I saw of as a Wigan youth team player didn't make me go "wow".
I was however impressed by Callum Styles (playing for Bury youth) who's now making a name for himself at Barnsley.
We've got Apter and Holmes on the bench now with a consequence of them now not playing any competitive football at any level and they'll end up in the same situation as Antwi, Shaw and Bange are now.
Its a very difficult problem to resolve.

I agree he's more Danny Cadametri or Franny Jeffers than than Wayne Rooney but I think it's the financial model of the academy isn't it? Keep them till 22 and hope Derby or Swansea or someone chuck a few million at them.

He's got an amazing goalscoring record through the levels and he's actually doing alright in that respect for us. I think he's got enough for them to see him as an asset for a few years yet.

Yes I also think Hanlon at Bristol Rovers would be a good asset in 18 match day squad. We do'nt
have anyone like him at present.

Yes given water only finished about 10 days ago

we also don’t know what Division we’ll be in either and I suspect that will exercise the minds of the management and Chairman / Board all through the summer and beyond

clet’s just give the last 5th of the season a try and then post this message eh ?
