Grant Ward receives racial abuse on Instagram

As for the abuse of Grant, it's wrong.
Sexual, racial or verbal it has no place in society and unfortunately the keyboard warriors have a beano on social media singling individuals out.

The problem is, at football games, people lose the plot.
Generally, people abuse opposition players in the hope of putting them off their game...I remember Zigic of Brum missing a sitter at BR and getting "da da da da, fxxxing useless" sung by us and you useless lanky cnut from his own supporters. He scored about a minute later.....
The point is, and I'm sure you'll disagree, but the fact is, people pick on any perceived weakness they can find.
I've been called a ginger this, that and the other all my life. Is it right? No but I just tell people to fxxk off....there's even a beer called "ginger tosser" with a picture of a freckled pail faced ginger bloke on it. Is that fair?
Turn that into a gollywog on a jar of jam and the world of snowflake erupts into faux disgust. They've probably all happilly had Robinsons jam, until it was pointed out that it wasn't PC.

There will always be people who think it's ok to be abusive.
There will always be people who are abused..... personally I've had a lifetime of it, even yesterday.....and I wouldn't mind but I'm grey now, I was told, once a ginger, always a fxxxing ginger.....I just called him an old ugly Tvvat and laughed it off.
I suppose its about how you deal with it personally, and as a ginger white, middle aged man, I am alone, no groups or Chammi Chakrabati to defend me!!
I just ignore or laugh along or snap back....
Whichever way, they usually chit themselves if you don't show weakness.

I agree in principle, but it’s also about culture, education and communities that have been left behind by the modern world. I really believe the only way to fight racism is to try to understand where it comes from. There’s that black guy Darryl Davis (I think) who spent his whole life attending klan rallies and converting a lot of racists without even trying, just the simple act of forgiving somebody went they don’t deserve to be forgiven can transform their whole world view.
 
Why can’t social media companies stand up and take some responsibility for this now, it’s getting worse if anything.

Its really simple, you have to sign up with a picture of yourself, and a form of real iD that needs to be verified with your address on and then these utterly vile human beings can be dealt with by the authorities and make social media a better place for everyone.

Just come off social media, twitter etc. Who the feck needs it, i was in facebook for a couple of years it was great to get back n touch with old mates etc, but in the end there was too much nonsense on it so binned it.

Same here Ginge - I’m ginger too and took hell through school and especially in local Blackpool & Fylde footie - I learnt to look after myself at cricket by being a sharpish bowler with a slight edge ! Anyone who annoyed me at that sport got their nose wiped when I was in the mood.

No it’s not right Ginge, but some of us are seen as ‘fair game’ - but that beer really sums up the ignorant attitudes of society - that beer name causes offence to me, I have never drunk it and I think if you remind me of the brewery I might write to them and copy to the Hate Crime policy division to get it banned - why not sell a beer mocking wheel chair users and call it Chair Bound ? It’s offensive, stop it and apologise for offence

I have to also say before last night’s result NC seemed to be picked by certain corners of this board - also very unfair IMO and it’s unforgiving, resurfacing at every opportunity - I’d like some to reflect on their criticism of NC’s professional abilities and either shut up, apologise or both.

The only issue I have with the Grant Ward abuse is what was actually written/said - it would be good to see that before commenting on the post and the outcome of any action being taken - he/she will be found so, if you are dim enough to write such unsavoury prose, don’t be surprised if you are found by the authorities.

Anyway, I’ll try and find some footie topics

GW improves every game. I really hope he can use this abuse as an incentive to push him to stay at or increase the level he is at.....and stick two fingers up to these ignorant idiots.

👍😁 I used to just smash anyone on the football pitch whether or not they name called 😂.
As you said, it's a life long thing seen as 'ok'. Bollocks to them is my attitude. Let them get on with it and grow stronger inside. I'm sure GW and any other player who is abused by racists or any other can use it as a positive and incentive as you did....'wipe their noses' to quote you, so to speak 😁

I just stated in our WhatsApp chat that it's a strange mentality to call out the race of an opponent when you have black players in your own team.

Someone questioned if that was the case last night for Sunderland.

I just checked and every player in their squad last night was white.
Which in this day and age is quite remarkable.

The account that sent it seems a really strange one, labelled as an "interesting things" instagram account and has posted some really random non-football related posts. Looking at its posts, followers and following it screams bot to me. I don't think it is a Sunderland fan masquerading, I think it's a bot set up by someone that sends racist messages to instagram accounts.

Whatever it is, whether it is just an individual behind it or a bot set up by someone its crazy how common this is happening - especially directed towards footballers. Must be horrible receiving a message like that and I feel for Ward, especially after he was probably on a high after last night's result and performance.

It is a strange account - I thought it's probably a bot too until my girlfriend told me it was following several accounts which were posting scantily clad young girls - which screams pedo - but then again if someone made a racist bot could they have made a pedo-bot? What would be the point in either? Glad I don't know to be honest.

What's awful from Instagram's point of view - there is no easy way to report the account. Only Grant could report the message - and you can't report it for the content they're following - even if it's screaming pedo.

I'm glad it's been referred to the police and hopefully something can be done if it's not a bot.

Bloody hell didn't even clock that, I was referring to the fact the accounts it is following is dominated by mainly East Asian lettering, which to me suggests it isn't a Sunderland fan who was watching last night and annoyed at Ward's performance.

As you say what a strange bot if that is the case, racially abusing League One footballers and disturbingly following scantily clad young girls. Hopefully instagram/the police can sort it.

There have always been (and will always be) some deeply unpleasant and moronic individuals out there in society.

If football, and people in general want this to stop then they need to demand change by boycotting social media permanently until the companies take action.

It's not beyond them to develop a system whereby people need to verify their identity ... or do they not want this??

Or are we faced with another 10 years and more of brow beating, chin scratching and continued trolling and abuse. Get it done. Get a few culprits prosecuted and sent down for 12 months.
 
We ALL know this is wrong on all levels, even the arse that’s dealt it out! Just what the hell is wrong with people?
Why in this day and age are people still living their lives being racist.... I just don’t get it or understand why!

I seriously hope the person who racially abused Ward is brought to justice, named and shamed.
 
It's not social media's fault, this has happened at grounds forever, where he scumbags thought they were just as protected from the players, Cantona had the best way of dealing with it, Ince had to be dragged way from the crowd after as well.
