Carlisle v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 24.07.21

Just got back. Overall we controlled the game well, unlucky not to score more, I thought CJ was onside for his disallowed strike.

Some thoughts:

- The young lad Trusty was neat and tidy on the ball in the middle of the park.

- Connolly at right back doesn’t offer the same threat as Garbutt on the other side.

- Yates needs a partner up top, someone to attract the defence to open up space.

- Keogh read the game well, up against much younger, quicker players and playing in a side full of youth.

- Didn’t recognise the trailist but he played right back for the second half. EDIT: Just seen the other thread about this.

A good run out though and good to see the youth lads getting some game time.

It was touch and go whether CJ was onside. To be fair the lino did flag straight away.

Other thoughts ….

At half time no cheese and onion crisps left, all steak pies gone , no sausage rolls, not even a meat and potato pie.
Choices were a Scotch Pie or nothing.

Not a bad run out, but I wouldn’t read too much into it, however the lad Tayt Trusty looks a fine prospect, kept it simple and did it well, second half wasn’t a great spectacle, but I felt Ewan Bange is another good prospect, held the ball up well and played some neat little passes. Now on to Tuesday. UTMP

yes i thought the same about Connolly ok but a bit limited Trusty was a bit like Antwi i was quiet impressed with him we do need more fire power up front

I would agree with most of that CT. Flag was up early for the offside.

I thought Hubby controlled the match at the back. My boys were amused at Maxwell telling Jerry to work harder !

ps I was home by 5.30 and had the bbq lit by 5.45 😂

I kind of lost the plot after all the subs. Trusty looked good. In the Lux Bar on Lowther Street.

You should have had a scotch pie, best in the world 😉
Had two

The Carlisle fan sat with us (in the as away end) thought Husband was our best player.

Youth team’s Tayt Trusty in the midfield. Thoughts @Insider?

Presumably midfield is where the Covid hit hardest. Wonder what the second half team looks like?
Sorry for not responding earlier. I've actually been in Blackpool all day visiting family so been out of touch with football other than on twitter.
I can't really tell you much about Tayt because of the difficulty I had getting access to Youth team games last season.
He did play early last season when he was a new recruit as a first year scholar.
He looked quite solid and competent without standing out.
By all accounts he did very well today.
The U/18s were due to play today (Huddersfield) but there's been no mention of a game on the Academy's twitter so I assume it was cancelled for Covid reasons.

Tayt seems to be very well thought of and you could see why today very good football brain but a little lacking in pace. U18’s won 3-1

Thanks for that Sweeps. 👍
Any more detail?
Has it been decided where they will be playing their home games this season yet?

It was a long old day with excellent weather. The light jacket, taken due to cloud and gloom in Yorkshire, was not needed.
Almost a disaster to start when I set off for the train in good time then realised I had left my wallet at home along with my house keys. Resulting in a quick trek back home and then a run to the station, about 3/4 mile, Running when you're 73 is not recommended.
Arrived in Carlisle at midday after a great journey up the Settle - Carlisle line. Lunch at the Sportsman with a couple of pints and another couple in the Howard Arms.

A slow walk to the ground and then the match, I can't add much to what has already been said, and I would also praise Trusty who seemed quite at home on the ball and, as I remarked at the time, obviously has good vision and an excellent football brain. It was a decent run out in a game controlled by Blackpool and due to the makeup of the team I wouldn't worry too much about us winning by a solitary goal. I too thought CJ was onside, but, I wasn't in the position the linesman was. MOM Husband for me.

Arrived home at 21.20 after another couple in the Weatherspoons near Carlisle Citadel Station, another great journey down the Settle-Carlisle line, the scenery on that route is magnificent, and a quickie in the Fox after arriving back in Shipley. Well it was a long, hot and thirsty day.

Good to meet Fat Boy, another face to recognise in the future.

I'm sure I spotted on Twitter that the U18s lost 3-0 to Rovers a week or so ago, but only on a Rovers Twitter feed I think.

6 pints when you're 73 is also not recommend. Especially after running. 😉

You are right, I saw it as well. We played T'Rovers last Tuesday. Mike Sheron is their u18 coach.
Not sure why theirs a sudden dearth of information unless it's "covid" related.

Scraftoman spotted a tactical tweak yesterday...

The Seasiders have clearly been working on a number of things in training, as the way they lined up and structured their build-up play was noticeably different at Brunton Park to what we saw last season. One thing I picked up on in particular was the regularity in which the forward men, but Demetri Mitchell and Keshi Anderson in particular, would come in from the flank into more central areas when the defenders had the ball and were looking to play out from the back. The Carlisle defence didn’t know whether to go with him, and risk creating space in behind, or back off and allow Mitchell to control the ball and turn at goal, another risky move given the quality of the winger’s direct runs. This caused Carlisle all sorts of problems and proved to be a major part of Blackpool’s build-up play. It resulted in plenty of opportunities, too, but too often Pool let themselves down with their final ball. Nevertheless, it’s clearly a tactic Critchley has identified as a potential source of success in the Championship this coming season. Chances are, the Seasiders won’t see as much of the ball as they previously did in League One, so picking up the ball in pockets and getting the wingers to fly in behind could prove crucial in creating clear-cut goal scoring opportunities.

No details sorry, from review of Huddersfield Twitter it was their Seventeens but for the most part i imagine it would be the same with Pool given how many were involved at Carlisle. Huddersfield said there would be a report early next week. Presume nothing has changed re home games and they remain at Myerscough but not heard anything official.

Mitchell and Hamilton running in behind any defence are going to cause massive problems if they can time their runs and get the right service.

just caught up with the game on the club site.

Thought Marv was strong, calm and his eye for the ball out of defence is improving.

Not blaming Maxwell but I felt some of the movement was a bit static from the goal kicks for him. Obviously we were going short with no big man to hit long so the ball is coming back to the keeper almost using him as an extra sweeper at times and its a bit panicky sometimes when hes received it back and there is no offer on for him and hes got to knock it into space which he did well but that requires everyone being on the same page.Almost caught us out with one midway through second half. When Bange came on Maxwell was able to hit him with every single kick.

Little bit slow to spot the run I thought,Yates made a few and didnt get the ball.

Mitchell took his goal very well. It was actually a very well worked goal in the end which ended up looking more route one than it actually was.

Mitchell,Garbutt and big Marv standouts for me.

Huddersfield's match report.

Who is in charge of these kids these days - is it Donnelly or Murphy .. also be interesting to know how much Critch is involved and I bet McCall will fancy being involved.
