What are they going to do about his face on Mount Rushmore?

But in all seriousness I really hate this washing away of history, going down a bad path.

History is there to be learned from, the people at the time acted in accordance with that time.

It won't fit with modern values nor is it meant to.

I can only imagine in years to come what people looking back and getting offended have managed to ban and erase from history.

🙄 come on, JJ, the point has been made and the question asked many times before on a variety of threads but how is removing a statue the ‘washing away of history’

Because like the figures or not they are part of the country's history.

Where does this end? Statues of all sorts of people, maybe a football club legend back in 1930 once said something, an online pressure mob latches on, tear down statues of old players?

It’s bit by bit and slowly more and more are offended by this or that and go back in time to cancel something.

We've seen it with some films and TV series.

I've not got a lot of time for it.

Things like the league of gentlemen got removed from netflix for papa lazorou 🙄

By the same token, removing statues is part of very recent history

How has Jefferson been cancelled

I just don't see the need.

Like I said bit by bit, if someone's offended by the statue then surely they are offended by their kids being taught about his awful ways? Soon these historic figures will be cancelled from history all together.

Who cares about what happens in America. From the people who can’t stay away from threads about American politics. 😂 This board and the people that inhabit it are just another level.

I’m sure you didn’t see the need for the holocaust or 9/11 either but they still happened.

first it’ll be Jefferson … then Stalin ….. then hitler

none so blind ……

History is exactly that, it's there to be learned from.
I'm sure the Jews wouldn't want the persecution of them in the war to be eradicated and it never will.

It's like the little kid that closes their eyes and plugs their ears and shouts blah blah blah hoping everything will change and they wont listen.

You can pull down as many statues as you want, burn as many books too but it'll never get rid of what has happened.

I said I dont see the need to cancel things or tear down history. What's 911 or anything else got to do with that? I'm not trying to cancel them.

Why do people always bring up hitler? Usually means someone has lost an argument.

Yep who cares about what happens there, it's not like whatever happens there spreads to here right?
JJ you may have taken my comment the wrong way. America has a huge impact on the UK positive and negative. It impacts the UK in ways it does not impact any other nation on the world.

I say this having citizenship of both nations.

I honestly find the way US politics seeps into UK culture as laughable and ill thought out, I really cringe the odd times o come on here at peoples takes on US politics. To me on both sides of the aisle it’s like water, the line of least resistance for both sides to rally around.

Just awful, there’s more to life than chatting shit about politics to people that will never change their world view on things. This side of the board honestly turned me off checking in on here often. It just brought the worst out in people that I agreed and disagreed with about BFC and football in general. Made me want to not engage with people on here in general. I honestly just came here in the past to talk to people about their thoughts on BFC, football and they future of our club and the game at large.

I mean most people won’t really care about this mini rant or even notice I don’t come on here at all anymore but I’m just in the mood to post it tonight.

Anyway there’s 2 minutes of your life you’ll never get back JJ. Take it easy mate. Roll on Brum.

Remainers lost the vote but they can’t get over it.
Some of them out there are some of the most bitter people ever, rather than accept it and move on, go with it they jump on every slight issue whether it's brexit related or not and claim it is.

So desperate to shoot down brexit and prove it's been a failure like they were told it would be.

Of course, those more than a little right of centre have continually tried to eradicate the fact of the holocaust

as for pulling down statues, (conflating it … or should that be conflagrating it …. with book burning is a little ridiculous), i would suggest that people, generally speaking, are pulling them down because they celebrate someone not deemed worthy of being celebrated in the more ‘enlightened‘ world in which we now live, rather than an attempt to cancel history which, as you correctly state, ‘has happened’. The fact that they have done it without consulting everyone seems to be the thing that really upsets those who still support the unsupportable

They think if they complain long enough and loud enough we will go cap in hand and ask to be re-admitted. What they should be doing is accepting the result and helping the rest of us to make the country a success.

Its only a bit of debate, nothing life changing.

Just don't agree with the whole cancel culture and the vast majority agree.

US issues make it over but often don't translate in the same way.

A bit like the whole BLM when that started, people here going mad at our police like we have police and issues like the US shooting people, when we have nothing of the sort.

JJ again I agree BLM is a joke in America let alone translated here.

Cancel culture is a weird one. It happens when on both sides and again people
that advance that argument I find a bit repulsive. I believe in freedom.

The sad thing is I disagree with you that it’s just a bit of debate look at the state of affairs US politics has in effect brought about in the UK on every day life. Like you say it just does not translate. However both sides of the political divide really struggle to separate themselves from American influence. American politics and the advance of mass media really has has a detrimental affect on UK culture if you ask me.

Personally, like I say it just puts me off engaging with people on here about BFC and football in general having read some of their stuff on this side of the board.

Maybe it’s just me but when people start taking about politics what ever their views it really does soil any other interaction you have with them, not just on here but in life in general. I’m not sure we’ve ever lived in such a hyper politicised state of affairs ever. I don’t think that’s been a boon to our culture.

I’m just old enough to remember when people found it taboo to talk about politics with each other. The future doesn’t always mean progression.

Well these things are always going to be debated on this side, as long as people remain civil when in disagreement.

People will always have different views.

A bit of debate on a range of issues isn't going to change the world.

I wonder if enough people are offended by cancel culture they can cancel cancel culture...... 🤔

Or is that a paradox....

I guess it’s just me. I come here (less and less) for BFC not to argue or be reaffirmed about politics. Each to their own I guess. I just find people that do come here for a political ding dong really odd which then, I think affects me interacting with people on BFC. Again maybe just me. I wonder what this place would be like with out the politics and a ban on all political talk on the BFC side. I think better. Anyway. I’ve chatted shit enough tonight. See you all at Brum.

*Edit to add - I’ve just read the migrant death thread and Lytham, who I agree fleeting with describes it well, what ever side of the immigration argument people can’t even find condolence in the death of people. It just spirals into Blackpool fans arguing into bullshit rhetoric and politics, again both sides. For one of the only times I felt he was calling out both sides friends and foes. I don’t know. Is there an argument to shut this side down an the mods keep up their epic work of shutting down any political minefields on a purely BFC message board?

I think that is a paradox, the ultimate catch 22? How do you cancel without cancelling 😮

feckin’ hypocrite

It has quite a lot to do with it really… There was some suggestion that the Israeli state might have been involved or aware of the incident in advance and there was (I understand) a relevant connection..
Unbelievable.

Fuck it just casual racism. 😂

You’re utter scum.

It's literally being moved to a museum...a place where you can learn about things...like history. More likley to learn about the guy there, than in a random city hall most people won't go into and won't have information displayed about the fella.

Easily triggered.

There seem to be a few on here who in support of the removal of certain statues due to their past.

I wonder how many of you wear Adidas, Puma or use German products with a similar background?

Go on how many?
GO ON TELL US, TELL US!

I'd have gone with VW personally.

The problem is so many people copy what the Yanks do. It's worse than bloody Covid.
