What did we think of Grimshaw?

Didn't really have much else to do apart from the two goals, neither of which were down to him.

Agree that Moore looks the bigger physical presence, which I always like in a keeper.

I think the truth is, neither of them are Maxwell but probably Grimshaw has more capacity to grow into the role as he's younger. Moore has had fair few years/clubs/games to develop whereas Grimshaw is closer to the beginning of that process.

I think it shows exactly how good Maxwell is with his link play with outfield most of all as opposed to any glaring deficiency in the back up. Maxi is quite special.

Just remember that Dan Grimshaw is a young lad trying to make a career for himself in football. He had never played a league game until yesterday, and stepping into Maxi’s shoes was one hell of a step up . If he showed signs of nerves early on , then that is to be expected, confidence will come with experience, the more games played , the more confident he will get and may be prove that he is Maxi’s replacement in the long term. Judging him from one league game is in my opinion a touch unfair . UTMP

Wouldn't have wanted to wash his pants post game. Most difficult position for debutants. Too much time to think and no real opportunity to just run round and get stick in until the nerves disappear. No clangers tho but obvs his kicking from floor needs to get better. Rating: B-

Lacks physical presence, kicking poor, looked nervy… He didn’t have a nightmare though amd TBF it was a big game (crowd size and atmosphere)to make a debut.

Hopefully he will grow in confidence if not in stature 👍

I think if you concede two goals and you're not the Number One then we need to look at the other option.

My wife said first half, do they not like Grimshaw, seemed to be a few backpasses that weren't very helpful on debut. I had to agree tbh.

He made stops but he didn’t push them away far enough, hence their 2nd goal.
Compare and contrast to the saves made by Preston keeper Iversen in their match vs Derby.
I’d go with Moore until Maxwell is ready.

As said above didn't do much wrong apart from the distribution with his feet which was awful. Could of been down to nerves as was a major step up from nay game he's ever played in before.

Amazing how many goalkeeping experts there are. He’s a 23 year old lad making his first league start, legs will have been like jelly first 10 minutes. Made some decent stops not at fault for either goal a pretty good debut. More than any other position it must take a keeper at least a couple of games to adjust to the pace of the game.

Bit harsh that Neil, the second one was a point blank reaction save which he did well to spread himself for. No chance for him to actually push it away from goal, just one of those where you have to hope a tangerine shirt gets to it first which unfortunately we didn’t. Before the game I said I’d have preferred Moore to play but having seen Grimshaw I don’t really think there’s much between them and if he keeps the shirt now which I expect he will then good luck to the lad.

Speaking of that second goal, didn't Grabban come from an offside position to score? He was beyond the keeper before the ball was played in and he then turned and tapped in.

Well said.

I thought Grimshaw's distribution was good in the two Carabao games at Bloomfield. And I suspected he would be selected for that reason. Making your league debut in front of 30k away from home is a very big deal, it's amazing how many football supporters fail to take any of that into account.

Horrendous ball to Eki but having seen last night on TV and been there in person on Saturday, there was a huge difference in confidence - despite now letting in 4 goals in 2 games you'd have thought he is the starter for Saturday?

Just posted this on another thread.

I just have an issue with short goalkeepers; I know there have been plenty decent keepers not much taller than 6ft BUT, assuming they are in a Championship squad because they are good enough, I like a commanding keeper and the extra reach matters; just purely on science.

Maxwell worries me whenever there are crosses, but I'd never bet against him in a 1 on 1.
Grimshaw appears in the same mould (from what I've seen of him)
Moore saved that shot when he replaced Maxwell and I'm not convinced Maxwell or Grimshaw would have been physically tall enough to reach it.

There's strengths and weaknesses across the three of them and I'll back them whenever they wear our shirt but on personal preference give me a big commanding keeper. I think my man Critchley doesn't agree and he knows far more than me about this game!

I was fairly impressed with him on the whole last night.

The pass was left to Keogh rather than the Ekpiteta but that being said I think Ekpiteta needs to be able to deal with it given our 'play from the back' style.

More than adequate back-up to Maxi and still young and will improve.

I was very impressed with him last night. His save on the one on one when the score was at 2-0 was just as important as the goals we scored later. I thought he looked much more confident than on Saturday. I thought his distribution was top draw and if you look at the build up to the equaliser on the extended highlights on TTV, you will see it was his pinpoint floated ball out to the right that got us moving forward. I don't blame him for the second goal at all. It was big Marv that needed to deal with it better. It's an interesting point that TSS makes about short goalkeepers but I'm wondering if football is moving on from pure physical height and it's now even more important to have good control and passing ability (which a lot of tall goalies don't have). These attributes certainly favour our style and he has had good coaching on this at City. In my view, he has to and will start against the nobbers....

It was chalk and cheese in terms of confidence on the ball last night compared to the City Ground.

He'll start on Saturday. (Although with Critch, you just never know)

Thought I’d give this a bump how we feeling about Grimshaw now. Kicking a bit hit and miss but no one can argue he’s come in and done a great job. Confidence is a big part of it.

Seems a very laid back character, good keeper but not as good as Maxi, who didn't make the bench, has his injury resurfaced ?

He's made some very important one on one stops. I know they're all important, but his have been at important times in the games. He kept us in the game at Reading at 2-0 down, and another good stop again with his legs last night. When receiving the ball from a back pass, he clearly prefers the ball being passed across his body on to his right foot. I noticed he tries to get the ball onto his right foot when it's played to his left.

A couple of heart in mouth moments with his distribution last night as many have said, but for balance, his clearance to Keshi at Sheffield United was pretty good. Personally I think he's doing enough to keep his place, but maybe needs to work on his distribution, especially on his left foot.

Great positioning last night, kicking can and will improve. I noticed at one of WBA set pieces they had him totally blocked off and due to his lack of height he was never going to claim the ball, but an experienced pro like Keogh would sort that out for him.
