Murphs steps down

Getting Murphy’s replacement right is just as important as getting the head coach appointment right. With the plan for the training ground and academy and the desire to develop our own players the clubs next step is massive. There’s a lot of good people at the academy already but I’ve no idea if anyone is ready to take on the lead role. Perhaps Insider knows more ?

If it is St Helens then I suppose it is a good 2 to 3 hours out of your day, I wouldn't want to do it. I have a 10 minute walk to work each day, time saved and money saved is worth a lot to me.
I can understand his decision, maybe didn't do his back any good either!!

I’m sure you could do St Helen’s in 40 mins in one of those postie vans of yours😁

It's been a pleasure to watch you play a key role as a player for many years and a super job watching the youth team and the young players you've brought through for the club. A true and loyal servant to the club.

"and it’s going to feel strange not to be associated with the Club anymore."

You'll always be associated with the Club John.

Disappointing.

Meanwhile, can I be the first to ask - "what was the real reason he left?...."
Can I be the 1st to reply, it's solely between Murphs and the club 👍🏻

A true ‘old-school’ centre-forward - always a goal in the offing when the big man was around.

He’ll always be ‘one of our own’. 👏👏👏

Well done Murphs. A true Tangerine. I well remember the many times he had a centre half riding on his back. It's no wonder he had health problems. He deserved a stint in the Championship but at the time we had wanker Oyston.

Great player. Hear he did great things with the academy even though none ever established themselves in the first team.

I'm certainly not well connected enough to know who will replace Murphs. I just go and watch the kids play and pick up a bit of information here and there. I'm sure Matty Blinkhorn and Ciaran Donnelly will be able to look after things on a caretaker basis until a replacement is found.
Danny Ventre, who was John's predecessor in the role, has also recently left the club otherwise he might possibly have returned to his former role. I'm not sure why Danny left but @Gary might have a bit of info on that.

Sorry but there seems to be too many of the team leaving today. Big John has done an amazing job and I genuinely hope this has been his own choice. He is a club legend.

Murphs has been leaving for ages, nothing to do with Appleton.

Does seem a bit odd resigning on the first day back at training with the new coaching set-up.

Surely, if you were going to resign, you'd have done it on the last day of training at the end of last season. 🤔

Anyway whatever has happened, he was a good player for us and hope it goes well for him in the future.👍

Old Glass Back comes back to haunt him by the sound of it. Remember talking to Mickey Mellon who said football took such a toll on his body that he often struggled get upstairs at night and would often just kip on the sofa.
Good luck to Murphs - proper legend.

Nothing ‘has happened’ as you put it. Read Murph’s explanation and you will see it makes a lot of sense…

7years as a player, 11 years in coaching is some loyalty. If he can stick out through the years of that scum he deserves a testimonial. 2010 team v a Murphy Millenium Mash up squad
