122,000 tests achieved

I tend to think that committing to the target of 100,000 tests per day is by far and away the best way to get there. Yes' you'll always get the naysayers "It's impossible, it can't be done...." etc. etc. They'll find a way and we will achieve or get mighty close to achieving the 100,000 tests and that will be down to Hancock's commitment.

Spot on. Now we're ready to move forward. Well done Matt Hancock.

Even this morning the papers were ridiculing the aim of 100k tests per day. As Matt Hancock says, this result allows the UK to move onto the next stage and was necessary before any thoughts of easing the lockdown.

It is a good achievement and will greatly enhance our ability to safely lift the lockdown. That said, had we been able to do this earlier, we would've been in an even better position. I don't blame the government - this is an unprecedented crisis. However, I would blame the government if it happened again, as there is now no excuse for not investing to permanently increase our diagnostic capacity. We need to learn lessons and be much better prepared next time (be that a new disease or a second wave of this one) - that will be the true test of good governance.

One of my lads found out his girlfriend had tested positive with mild symptons.. So he went online booked a test, got it 24 hours later. Proved negative so back to work..

Testing process works...

Serious question Jack. Should your lad's g/f not be self-isolating? I mean if he's staying in contact with her is he not in danger of infection?

Even if there's a bit of massaging of the figures it's a 👍 👍 👍 from me.
Nothing wrong with setting yourself challenging targets, just like Valeri did. 😃

Well yippee-doo!

Non-political points:
1. We were way too slow.
2. 100k per day is not enough.

It was not a target, simply an interim milestone given out to mask the fact that we started too late. Honestly, it isn't worth the hurrahs.

I see the Chief Procurement Officer for the NHS in London has said there is absolutely no conflict of interest in him setting up a company two weeks ago to sell PPE.

Of course not. I'm sure he's been 100% focused on the day job.

They used to be counting only completed tests in the daily total. The rules were changed earlier in this week. Now they are counting tens of thousands of test kits that are still in the post, as well as those people who have just signed up online for one and have been approved.

It’s a shame really, as reaching something like 80k+ real test results would still be an achievement. But now we know they will twist anything and deceive us just to save Hancock five minutes of embarrassment in a press conference.

Well, I suppose we are now going in the right direction. Though they are treating us as if we are all children.

It will be interesting to see the figures for the next few days or whether 30 April was a peak.

I agree but all political parties massage figures & stats to suit themselves. Its pretty much standard practice & has been for decades at least.
Id be more concerned/shocked if thy didnt!! 😂

His girlfriend is a nurse and they dont live together. He is working away in London with me. Therefore when she tested positive as part of the screening of all nurses, with mild symptoms, she self isolated.

He went home and got tested. If he had tested positive then he would have stayed at home. He tested negative, thereofre straight back to work. Saving him and us money time and effort.

As i said, system worked.

True but i should imagine they will try to keep it around the 100 thousand figure if possible for the forseeable.
It will be interesting too what happens long term & if they try to get millions of tests done?

Then it's about time we gave them some stick for doing it!

Cat. You still haven't answered my question about accepting a plasma donation from Boris to save your life. Would you?

Maybe so but i really dont think this instance warrants throwing toys out of the pram!!
As far as governments go worldwide i would say ours have been pretty transparent on figures throughout this crisis.
Some would say they have perhaps been overly transparent with information?

Of course good ol Cat still takes the opportunity to call them lying & cheating scum at every opportunity 👍 😂

Even without the 39,000 sent in the post it's a massive increase and given where they have come from a big achievement.

Not sure why they needed to lie about it ?

It just makes them look much less credible . . just say it was 83 000 and I think we'd all have been impressed.

Compared to who-China maybe! North Korea almost definitely but compared to our fellow European democracies there is more evidence that our government is the one covering up than other nations. Admittedly that may be because we don't generally get to see all the coverage that are not in the English language.

Go on then Cat, enlighten us, what is the source of this evidence that our government is covering up more than other nations?

Go on then i will bite produce the evidence?
If you dont think every major European democracy doesnt have people pissed at their government on some level over Covid you are wrong.

The only country Cat accuses of anything apart from the US is his own . He pretty much thinks China and the WHO are blameless in all this.
Sure, 39,000 sent out for testing is a manipulation of the 100,000 target but as I've more than once that target was pretty unrealistic so the govt should never have set it. That said, the numbers are increasing so that's positive.

The professor said they were using the counting method they had previously agreed and would continue the same way. The man from Sky wasn't too pleased and asked for a breakdown of the figures then I thought he was going to ask him to name them.

Why do they have to bullshit all the time? Would be happy with 100,000 a day but 122,000? And actually - still impressive - 73,000 actual tests yesterday - will they continue to publish the figures do you think? We are all going to need considerably more than 1 test each over the next few months given that you might be clear today but not tomorrow!

only 73,000 tests actually carried out, and some of those are multiple tests on the same person, i.e. health workers who have multiple tests per day/week

The problem is that the huge increase in testing has been overshadowed by the fact that the government have manipulated the figures. Again. I just wish they would not set targets, promises etc and just get on with getting us through this shit.
That is a point I made when they first set the target. I said it would draw criticism and so it has proved. As you say just get on with doing it and doing as many as you can.

Just to point out that "sticking a cheque in the post" does not count as having paid your bill until the cheque actually clears.
This government lying and cheating again. Where is the compassion in that?

That's a response from a teacher rather than a lawyer. It is established case law that the act of posting a cheque does constitute payment.
Anyway, I see you have managed to bring your hatred of the Prime Minister into a thread about something else as usual. It seems to me that your interminable and predictable description of Boris Johnson as "a corrupt, self serving liar" at every opportunity says more about you than it does about him.
