How do today's figures compare to this time last week?

We know the UK's coronavirus figures are often lower on a Sunday and Monday, because of a lag in reporting at weekends.
But we can compare them to the figures last Sunday, when there were 9,834 new cases and 215 deaths. It means the number of deaths is 33% lower today than a week ago and the number of new cases 38.6% lower.
Looking at today's figures, it is the lowest number of deaths since 13 December, which was also a Sunday, when there were also 144 new deaths recorded.
And it is the lowest number of daily cases since 28 September - on that day, a Monday, there were 4,044 new cases.

I’m still curious as to how we still have so many deaths ? If the over 65s have been vaccinated and it’s generally the over 70s and vulnerable that get ill and die, then how are still getting deaths in The 100s ?

Possibly due to the fact non Covid deaths are being added to the figures. There have been a number of articles over the past week or two concerning families protests at having their loved ones deaths recorded as Covid. When in actual fact the deceased has suffered from COPD for a number of years, provided negative Covid test results (in some cases more than once) and passed away as a result of their long standing illness.

6 Cases of the Brazilian virus announced ,One who did not complete the required forms is still untraced. Comments that restrictions on incoming flights not quick enough.Incoming cases flew from Brazil but subsequently via other airports too.

People dont die quickly from respiratory problems so as the figures only include those who had a positive test within 28 days, I suggest those who have lingered will balance out those you mention.

Clearly this positive thread has no interest for those only concerned with the negative stuff. You know those lefties who think they are patriots.😉

The point I was trying to make is that deaths have been recorded as Covid even without a positive test within the 28 day period before passing.

Probably all still crying after the opinion polls released over the weekend showing conservatives racing further ahead due to the tremendous vaccination roll out😁😁

If you die with Covid, even if something else was the main COD it counts towards the figures if mentioned on the certificate.

I heard from a bloke in a pub, :) someone tested positive for Covid, then next week got knocked off his bike & died, says COVID on death cert.

If you die of anything and had a COVID positive test within 28 days then COVID is on the death certifI ate. Utter trash.

Every Covid death makes the Government performance look worse and worse.
I’m surprised they haven’t challenged this reporting style more?

Not sure what measurement criteria other countries are using, but I’ve never understood or believed the UK figures based on similar views above,

Could make a huge difference to the numbers if this death reporting was done for every person who had it despite actual death.

Interesting article here: https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/coronavirus-excess-deaths-tracker

The UK seems to be over-reporting deaths relative to excess deaths by maybe 5% or so, but some other countries are vastly understating their death toll.

Italy for example has suffered 54,000 Covid deaths up to the end of November, but the excess mortality is 93,000, thus if they counted deaths in the same way as the UK does they would likely be somewhere around 170,000 to date, about 50,000 ahead of us and from a smaller population.

Spain likewise only counts about 70% of their excess deaths as Covid deaths, the US and Holland 75%, Poland less than 50% and some others less than 20%.

So the reason our death toll looks so terrible is because we report it and others don't.

Strange that the numbers vaccinated today and yesterday were only around 230k and 200k.
that’s a massive slow down compared to last week.

Last week was pretty slow as well, the pattern is that the rate of vaccination ramps up from Monday to a peak on Saturday then drops down to a minimum on Sunday.

I think at the moment supplies from Pfizer are reduced because they're reworking production at one of their plants, it's what kicked off the whole EU row last month.

My step mother vaccinates in Lytham and the last week or so there hasn’t been great supply. This week though she’s been offered extra shifts as they now have a good supply of vaccine. The numbers will go up again to over half a million a day.
