We where playing Sheffield Wednesday at their place but the real ropic of the day was the realisation that nuclear war was likely to break out over Cuba.
On the previous evening the V-bombers of the RAF and their crews were put on alert and for the following 24 hours even though PM MacMillan had issued a statement that it was a spat between America and Russia we had nothing to fear.
The Americans were adamant that Russian missiles sites had been set up on the island just 90 miles from the Amercian mainland and put an embargo on ships entering Cuaba including those identified as carrying missiles and had threatened to invade Cuba unless the Russians backed down.
On that Saturday a U2 was brought down by a missile while proceeding over the island, it's pilot killed, although we did not hear about this until the following morning, but later in the day agreement was made between the Americans and Russians with Moscow withdrawing the ships with the missiles and the Americans agreeing to withdraw their Jupiter missiles from Turkey.
Just a week earlier I couldn't decide whether to visit my girl friend on the Saturday as it was here birthday or drive up to Sheffield for the match, as it happened the decision was made for me as the events over Cuba unfolded and the day was spent uncomfortably sitting in an aircraft.
Now the threat of Nuclear war over Ukraine is a possibility, rather like the Cuban missile crissis it is out of our hands, I just hope that some on here will be ariound in sixty years time to tell of the outcome of the present situation.

Thanks for the first hand account. It's as close as we've ever got to nuclear war so thanks for that insight.

See the girlfriend or go to the game. Life's continuing dilemma

The RAF were instructed to make a big show of our nuclear bombs being loaded into the bomb bays of the Vulcan bombers. The Government were aware that the Soviets were photographing all this so that they knew we weren't playing chicken.

Not just Vulcans but also Valiants and Victors approx 140 available in total dispersed from 36 air bases in the uk all able to get airborne and far away from their bases to escape the blast of incoming missiles in under four minutes, practised time and time again.
To illistrate this point to the Soviets demonstrations regularly took place including the Farnborough air show, we wanted them to know what the outcome would be if they launched an attack.

October 1962 a momentous month. Love Me Do was the first Beatles record release and it peaked at No.17. Was only a nipper so was oblivious to the nuclear war threat. Then a couple of months later began the coldest winter of the 20th Century. The Big Freeze from late December to early March. I believe the sea froze over at one point and Stanley Park lake was ice bound for weeks. A polar bear was seen roaming along Central Drive and Sir Jimmy and Tony Waiters ice skated on the pitch at Bloomfield Rd.☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃☃

It was dad’s 38th birthday. Don’t know what he was up to though. He’s 98 today and will be at the pub now with his mates probably moaning about the state of the economy! He was saying today how depressing it all is for the next generation… 🙄

One of my first memories is of large lumps of ice on the Wyre

I was a 14 year old at Arnold at the time. The only memory I have of the crisis is from our History Master , Dr Spence . reminding
us that some essay was due the following day finishing with ' that's if we are all still here that is' . He wasn't joking , quite chilling for a class
of 14 year olds.

Thanks for this Whits. You have so many interesting stories to tell 👌
Hope you’re keeping well ❤️

36 airbases? Wow.

Roll on 60 years we’ve got about 4/5 active front line bases in the U.K. today. 😮🙄

Of those we have just 2 rapid reaction bases at RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Conningsby where strike aircraft can be in the air in minutes.

Best not mention the way the Royal Navy and the Army has shrunk since then. 🙄

Perhaps I should make that statement somewhat clearelr, there were if my memory serveds me correctly 12 squadrons of V bombers at 12 air stations but for all aircraft to be airborne in four minutes no more than three or four aircraft could take off and be 12 miles clear of thieir departure point.
RAF stations such as Bedford and Manston for examable had pods built onto the end of the runways so they could accomodate the large bombers and in times of hightened emergencies squadrons would be dispersed along with their ground crews to these additional bases.

Did we win at Hillsborough?

All very chilling stuff. It mainly passed me by, back in the 60’s as I was only 3 although now it’s been mentioned I have a vague recollection of being on the beach with my dad & the sea was partly frozen. Probably this.
