49 years since Ceefax started

Our version of the Internet back in the day, as TP says our page used to give tantalising headlines which lured you to ring the premium rate club call to find out more..... which turned out to be sod all except very expensive for my single parent mum.

Ps I also used to play 'The Double' footy manager game on the ZX Spectrum, took about 20 minutes after each game for all the results to come in on the vidiprinter. I loved the 80s, still wear one of my 5 Casio watches every day

Irc 312 was the page for football news that wasn't worthy of a headline in its own right. I.e. the page owt to do with us would be on.

Cricket was 340+?

Loved flicking through the "in brief" page and the excitement of finding out Blackpool had made a new signing.

I remember the division 2 table was on 2 separate pages 1-11 - 12-24 and I recall how rare it was for us to be on the first page of it. Success back then was the brief periods where I didn't have to skip to page 2 to see our name.

Away at Oldham in the play offs ‘watched’ the flashing live score on Ceefax in a backwater bar in Italy.

Way further back before we even had ceefax at home I used to walk to Waterloo rd at 4.50 to watch the scores come up on the teles in Rumbelows window.

Kids today ….
I watched both matches live in a bar in Sofia, Bulgaria. Where were you, out of interest?

Worst ever done, was ring the O898 at the club to get game updates and somehow didn’t hang up. Cost me a small fortune.

It’s still on two separate pages on Sky Sports News!

49 years, and the holidays page has just looped back to the start, for anyone who's been waiting.

How can you describe to a kid what it was like to "watch" an away Test match via ceefax? Waiting for overs to change from 49.1 to 49.2 and whether runs or wickets had moved on.

I remember watching the penalties come in via Ceefax when we beat Scunthorpe at Wembley. I consequently ran down the road waving my Blackpool flag that I got from the previous year at the Torquay final. Modern football will never compare.
