So what do we think guys, this going to happen or not in tomorrow’s mini budget?
500 for every adult and. 250 for every child in cash vouchers to be spent on hospitality, face to face retail, or leisure. Not for online purchases or saving.
To get the economy moving where it’s lost ground due to Covid.
Thoughts?

I can see a second hand market as they are traded in for the fags / drugs / booze
Thought that myself TAM. Shame really but everything seems open to abuse on some level.
Would like to think the majority of us would accept graciously and not abuse.

Wow . . . the magic money tree has turned into a forest 😀
It’s more borrowing like furlough isn’t it. All aimed at keeping the economy going.
There never was a magic money tree. Desperate measures for desperate times I guess.

So due to COVID-19 the countries on its knees and now a govt think tank reckons it’s a good idea to get the country into more debt..? 🤣....

Short term growth needed now, longer term the debt will be repaid less painfully in more prosperous times apparently.
Its actuallyrecommended by a non government think tank and they’ve already done it in China. More than likely won’t happen to be honest.

Giving someone 500 quid so they can get pissed in the pub is not my idea of a good scheme.
This is the wrong way around the business should be able to claim the grant and give the customer a discount to stimulate growth over a period

There's only a magic money tree for Labour spending plans. That's why it's magic. It only appears for one party.

A grand for me and the misses to use in the pub or restaurants the places will rammed.
Exactly this is why they are doing it - never mind all the COVID related deaths, here’s a few quid, get down the pub and raise a glass to good old Boris - he’s like Father Christmas and Death all rolled into one!

Can’t wait to see what the catch is, maybe like the School Meal vouchers that can’t be spent in the 3 cheapest supermarkets - Aldi, Lidl and the Co-op - probably find that the only pubs allowed to accept are Wetherspoons.

I think this is called a bribe.

As Milton Friedman said there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
This is absolute madness.
I’m not sure what the Conservative party actually conserve anymore.

We’re in a strange place where the tories have occupied the space of New Labour and Stanmer is probably going to have to drag the Labour Party from the far left to centre right.

what weird times we live in.

Let’s hope this helps get things going a bit hopefully without spreading the virus too much (if it happens) and helps to save a lot of jobs, which would cost the chancellor anyway.
The Government can see much more upto date figures than we can so they might feel this is more necessary than some of us do at the moment.
It could work but it might just be an expensive way of ‘Pushing on string’ as the old saying goes.

Can I just add again this isn’t something the government have actually said they are doing or commented on at all. Only the press.
Don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up or down 👍

Wouldn't it make more sense to give the money direct to the shops, cutting out the middle man, a lot of whom will lose them anyway?

I can’t see how any wealth distribution is ever any good. Any government picking winners and losers is a bad path to walk down.

Would prefer targeted money to those who have kept working through furlough, myself.Millions of people will get money who don't need it, and many need it more.
So people who haven't lost out get more money ? Plenty of people have not worked for the lockdown and not received any hand outs. Others have been made redundant . . . why would you focus on those who still have a job ?

It will be Boris and Co giving it the go ahead though.
It hasn’t been sanctioned though yet!
And maybe won’t!
Its a left wing bias think tank that has suggested it for now. People are again making judgements on political bias, it’s a little bit funny to be honest.
The government can’t win whichever way they jump with this one it appears.

Maybe they are trying to change our behaviour and get us used to ‘consuming’ again at the same time as putting the money out there? Fine if it doesn’t help spread the virus 🦠!

Wow untie your knickers Lala, I’m not having a go.

I realise it’s only a story at the minute. But it is a fact that the Government will roll this out, if anyone does. That’s an indisputable fact.

I’m not left or right. I think both parties are truly dreadful, and I’m not even sure these labels even apply anymore which I was trying to highlight in my first post.

I need a block on the politics and Covid forum it gets you no where. I tell mySelf every time to avoid but just can’t help my self. 😂

Sorry Rek, am not actually directing my laughter at you. more at the more die hard rigid political experts like Shandy who tried to call me out and shot themselves dead in the foot to prove a non viable point.
Very funny, am still allowing myself a little chuckle at this one. I wasn’t even fishing 🎣 too easy.

No apology needed, I got well and truly hooked to be honest, I did need you to remind me that it’s only a story 🤣. Again I need to block this forum I’m bad enough on the main one. 😂

No. Because then only the shop benefits. Not the supply chain. Most will have stock from pre lockdown so if this is bought by customers with vouchers then they would need to re stock, thus helping the supply chain.
Giving the shops this money for no goods means they still will have stock to sell and stagnates the supply chain.

Ok

Must say all initiatives I se are going to cost a fortune . I know it is about kucjstarting the economy but this is going to have to be paid somewhere down the line
Have a 22 year and 25 year old - surely we are not expecting that generation and other youngsters to pick up the tab

not sure the stamp duty scheme will benefit many. I can see those who are planning to move (no stamp duty for first time buyers under 300k) just adjusting when so they benefit.

Trouble is not jump starting the economy will cause much more pain. It's speculate to accumulate and these initiatives are the right thing to do and actually a decent idea.

Well done to the government for the tenner off voucher.

At the risk of being seen as a killjoy, Rishi is just wallpapering over the cracks. With a bit of window dressing. And these cracks threaten the structural integity of the country...

Stamp Duty cut? Only until March 21, and will really benefit only those paying half a mill for a house...
“However, this measure is unlikely to solve the inherent issues in the housing market. The cut will most help buyers in high-value areas, which are mainly in London, the south-east and south-west of England. The average first home in northern regions is below £150,000 and around 90% of first-time buyers in England won’t see any benefit from this change.” (Yorkshire Building Soc).

Furthermore, what is likely to happen is that the house sellers will simply stick another 3-5% on their asking prices, so the buyers don’t really win. They will see the benefit of saving up to £15k in hard cash that won’t go the Govt in tax at the point of sale, which is satisfying though. As I say, only the rich south will really benefit and the rest of us will be subsidising their tax savings.

Hospitality discount...
The chancellor announces an “eat out to help out discount” to encourage consumers to spend at restaurants and cafes. Meals eaten at any participating businesses, from Mondays to Wednesdays in August, will be 50% off up to a maximum discount of £10 per head for everyone, including children.

It’s like some shitty standard Pizza Hut or Nando’s deal to fill a few tables on the quiet days of the week, not actually when you really want to go out... which are Fridays and Saturdays. You can always find deals like this normally (2 main meals for the price of one, free bottle of wine etc) for the unpopular evenings. The only difference is that you can now find them at all establishments, rather than just the crappy ones. And, again, restaurants will stick a few quid on the price of dishes.

Perhaps the worthwhile initiatives are the Green Benefits and Job Encouragement schemes for the young.

Green stuff...Vouchers worth £5,000 and up to £10,000 for poorer families will be made available out of a £2bn pot to retrofit homes with insulation, helping to cut carbon emissions. (There have plenty of these grant schemes over the years. How many will take this up now?).

Job schemes... “Sunak announces the “kickstart” job creation scheme for young people. The government will pay the wages of new young employees for six months. There will be an initial £2bn to fund hundreds of thousands of jobs. Sunak says there will be no cap on the number of places available.”

But these low wage jobs for the kids are not going to fully offset the hundreds of thousands of jobs lost through forced redundancies over the next year. And the time limit of 6 months means that the company can just fire them at the end of 6 months when the Govt pay is stopped, with no comeback as one has little job protection for the first year.

So... I am rather underwhelmed as none of Rishi’s schemes seem to be radical for the country and, personally, none seem to affect me, though I hope that I am not likely to be one in need of that help. What is concerning is that this might stoke up inflation.

Nice try, Rishi, but I think we might be heading for a real “winter of discontent”.

Give over Karen. You'd be frothing at the mouth if commie Corbyn spent half as much as the Tories are chucking about. Veins bulging and eyes popping out yer head, I tell thee

Commie Corbyn would have taken over all the factories and business so I wouldn’t have any need to get angry about a voucher scheme.
