A few thoughts

Just looking through the various threads and FWIW:

Treadtracker are the example of what this club could be about. Just a fabulous gesture.

Ipswich were a class above and it showed; that said a huge number of their shots were speculative at best.

Shame we couldn't take the lead or level as it would have been something else.

Fans were great.

27,000 is a good attendance.

Lastly it felt like a game we should have had pre-season; or more of an intense training run out than a competitive match. The gulf in class meant we could almost play with the freedom they could.

Anyway, I enjoyed it.

It's also a reminder that if we were to get promoted at some point that we need to be a lot strong and on it than we are now or we'd come straight back side without major strengthening. Our best promotion seasons have been when we've had a side that could flourish the following the season without too many additions and I think we'd all agree that's not this side at the moment.

The disappointing things for me is that we don't appear to have addressed the basics over the last few seasons:
1. Pass and move quickly
2. Set pieces
3. Building a strong spine, with central midfield a particular weakness.
4. Competing for and winning 50:50 balls.

The passing and giving the ball away aimlessly had been a worry all season - not seen many teams as bad as us in that respect

1. Pass and move quickly

Of your four points this is the one that annoys me the most. The amount of times that our defence and midfield stand on the ball and don't make a decision until almost closed down is so frustrating.

That is in part due to lack of options and movement ahead. This is most obvious in Coulson. He races to the HW line at 100mph then has to stop and check back.

They are not quite aware of who should be doing what yet. Maybe that the lack of quality in linkplay.

It was a great day, helped by Steve's fantastic gesture. It was always going to be a big ask, especially as they went with a strong starting 11. I thought we did OK but also knew we had to take our chances to really push them. As you say, just a shame the goal didn't come with 5 mins remaining, to really get our fans up for an equaliser. Hopefully all made it back safely and the players didn't pick up any more injuries. Our focus can now be fully on the league and making sure we climb further away from trouble.

Maybe they should be expecting or looking for an early run from Coulson, and then he wouldn't have to stop and check back.

This isn't just an Evatt era problem.

Actually since Evatt came in the quickness of passing , pass and go has actually improved quite a bit in my opinion
