A free hit

The rest of the season is a bit of a free hit. We can’t go up and be very unlikely for us to go down.

Time to bed players in that will actually be here next season. Give Howe, Thorniey, Ward, Nuttall and Madine as much game time as possible. Bed them in. Results almost don’t matter now. It’s about performances and getting the players used to each other. The next 14 games are next seasons pre season

The only problem anyone has coming in is the majority of the players they will be using and putting in the first team won't be our players next season. We seem to have gone back to the O's days of not having a solid base to work on next season and a load of loans who will return to their parent club.

This is a very sensible approach that would pay long-term dividends next season. But it's almost too sensible.

As much as I'd like to see our own players bedded in and learning to work together in future, it's not the way managers think, nor indeed, the fans. They're thinking on a much shorter timescale -- winning the next match, and the match after that. The manager will be thinking about the number of points per game and his win percentage stats, because that affects his long-term record. So, he'll put out the strongest team he can. It's the way football works.
