I'm surprised no one has mention this disgraceful episode.

It would appear we no longer have a culture according to some.

If our national flag offends some people, WHY do they live here?

With that said, I feel I have said enough, apart from those at the school who caused this discrimination by barring this young lady should be dealt with by a higher authority.

I find it weird that a school wants to have a cultural diversity day in the first place? Just seems a little pushy and they opened themselves up to this piece of media. Or at least plan it so one child gets to come as Britain and do what this little girl did and talk of Shakespeare, Nightingale, Newton, Turing etc

I don't imagine schools in Saudi, China, Afghanistan doing such events?

Let's just remind ourselves what "woke" means in a traditional context and not according to the Sun or Farage :

So, outside of any radical contexts where poor decisions (including the OP) have been taken, wringed by the gutter press and thrown to the nation, I think we're all a bit woke, no ?

- Anti-racism
- Against homophobia
- Against misogynie
- Against hate of any kind (barring that of PNE)

The right have done a sensational job in manipulating the term so that it's become a slurr and an insult. Chapeau.

Note : the OP itself is ridiculous and the girl shouldn't have been shunned as such.
 
The school created a poorly thought out event with unnecessary rules and played into the hands of a disingenuous parent, motivated by malice.

Reading the 12 year olds culture day essay it was clearly written by a parent with an agenda.

Have and never will berate the fact the conversation exists, just its contents in what I disagree with.

So you admit that if there exists a scale of "wokeness", there's a side you personally can agree with and relate to? So when you evoke the terme woke, it's the "bad" side, right?

And yet some on here are quick to say it wasn't written by her but by a parent with an agenda. I'd suggest it's the poster who has an agenda.
 
Looking at the reports and some of the contents, re gutter press, the Guardian and also the BBC have reported on it amongst others. It's the first time I've heard of the Guardian being classed a gutter press!

As for Union Jack or Union Flag, The Admiralty used both names interchangeably from the seventeenth century onwards, irrespective of use.

An Admiralty Circular of 1902 pronounced that either name was officially valid.

And in 1908 Parliament approved this verdict, confirming that ‘The Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag’.

Why does this forum sometimes plumb the depths of idiocy with threads like this? There are plenty of things to get upset about: the low attainment standards in too many schools, world poverty, the fascists governing Israel, Putin, Trump, the widening gap between the super-rich and the rest of us.
But no, let's call out this woke myth for being the existential crisis of the age.

Better still let's banish the tabloid press and the 'red top' news channels for peddling this crap.

Why do you have to resort to insults? Inflation rising is an issue, certainly. As is the reduction in growth and the rise in some areas of unemployment. All of these are worthy subjects that we on our different sides of politics can bat about.
