A random game you will never forget? NOSTALGIC POST

February 1996 away to Bournemouth
Lost 1-0 and Vegaspool was arrested. When at the turnstiles we changed entrances aftet deciding we wanted to sit in the seats and not stand on the terraces. No reason or explanation given, just cuffed and carted off to the old bill station. Finally managed to find out which station they had taken him to. (The furthest away from the ground) I managed to get a taxi and made my way there to collect him. Released him as the game ended, then back in the taxi to the coaches. Luckily enough the coach steward knew us both and delayed the coach departure long enough for us to get on board.

I remember that game, but for a different reason. I'd started taking a sectional concrete garage down inc. the roof at 8 in the morning. By half 4 all that remained was the iron posts in the corners and the roof struts. I was knackered and had no energy. Game was on and Chizzy (sure it was) described, loosely, Tricky Trev's run from the half way line and him scoring. With size 11 hobnails on I kicked the post nearest me in delight and the whole lot fell down.

Double result. We needed that win to stay up near enough.

Same ground Aldridge scoring 2 in a 3-1 win was a good afternoon.
Trevor scored at old ground kept in forever , Aldridge at new ground one of our group from Lancaster led the stewards a merry dance on the pitch at the end of the game!!!!😀😀🍊🍊

You'll be right.

The Victoria Ground wasn't a fun day out. Think I saw a 2-1 win there, no sure it was 2-1. I may check...

If we are talking random games, three spring to mind:

Derby County away, 7th September, 1985, 1 - 2 win, O'Keefe scored both goals, one a penalty, the locals were not happy.

Bristol City home, 3rd November, 1987, 4 - 2 win, 2 - 2 until very late on and Craig Madden popped up with two to win the game.

Halifax away, can't be bothered to look up the year but it was New Years Day, massively hungover, freezing cold sat in the wooden stand lost 1 - 0.

Darlington away in the 90's Tricky Trev wheeling in the kit basket off the bus & then in the away end with us ... Fiinshed 1-1
Leeds away 5-0 have sworn I'll never go back to Elland Road again (Might not get the chance in my lifetime)
Swansea away in the promotion season .. Joe Harts "ping" & first time finsh from Any Morrell was a thing of beauty .. bumped into the scarecrow outside ;-/

Southport away, pre-season 2023. The club had got into a habit of having this as a friendly and we as a family loved it as it was a) down the road b) the 1st opportunity of the season to see some new signings. Towards the end of the 2023 season my eldest son became suddenly ill and was fighting for his life with multiple organ failure as sepsis consumed his paradoxically young, super fit body. I watched the last couple of games of the season with him in intensive care, Southport Hospital where he reminded for 2 weeks. He was honestly as mad at relegation as he was at being in hospital!

He thatnkfully made a full recovery. That pre-season game was the 1st time I got to stand by a pitch once again with my 2 sons. I didn’t give a fig if the cleaning lady was in goal, I just kept looking at them both laughing and joking together in their tangerine tops in the sunshine. It was absolutely amazing.

1978 Pool 5-2 Blackburn (Hatton 4) - the last game I went to before my family moved south and I became an exile. Sat in the South. Pool would have been wearing the Umbro kit but with the older collar. I remember some Rovers fan getting a right kicking on Bloomfield Rd.

We were in the upper reaches of the division at that stage and looking good. The next week Alan Brown fell out with the Chairman (Bill Cartmell?) who then gave him the boot. Cartmell was a right cnt according to my uncle. And that was that as far as the Second Division was concerned, we got relegated and didn't get back there for nearly 30 bloody years.

too many to mention in a way.

Preston away in 1970. We went up and sent them down as well as other things on that day.

And one more which wasn't about the game but the journey there. Bristol Rovers at Eastville, We lost the game 1-0 but went in a car and never stopped laughing the whole way there. All around the time of Fred and Rose West and the jokes just kept on flowing. We even did a detour into Gloucester. How sick was that.

Great story and outcome that. I remember the Southport game for that incident when a few of their yoof decided to bait a few Pool fans who rolled back the years to chase them down the paddock. Ben Mansfield stepped in as UN peacemaker and their ps woman gave the assembled multitudes a very stern bollocking. Comedy gold!

Plymouth at Home and the Richard Walker Bullet Header... It seemed to be the moment that kick started our rise back up the leagues Their keeper had kept us out all night and was broken and dejected when the header went flying past him. I remember going nuts in the South Paddock. That game had everything apart from lots of goals!

Surprised Koudo hasn't mentioned this game. It was the first game he attended.
Ha ha that means you must have took me? For years I thought it was Scarborough, I could never understand why I couldn’t find the programme for that game. Years later you volunteered to do some leafleting for one of the judgement day protests and explained you took me to my first game. I wasn’t hooked until 4 years later but thank you for taking me to that game. Things that stood out that day was seeing the pitch, the tower and thousands of Stockport fans in different colours. The lob towards the south that bounced 2 or three times then went just over the bar. When we got to spen corner the results came on the radio and you cheered really loudly which I found funny, seems like yesterday such are those memories

I think that was the year before… Bonkers wasn’t it? Ben in his Ray Ben Aviators calming the madding crowd and the PA woman saying it was all a terrible kerfuffle! 🤣🤣

Derby away out drinking with Derbys finest all weekend met them following England . Got the local sports paper headline O’Keefe sinks Rams by the end of the night constantly showing them the paper disappeared !!!😂😂🍊🍊

It had lots of rain.

Pool v Chelsea when Osgood broke his leg after a tackle with Emlyn Hughes- huge crack heard around the ground! Think Pool won
Beating the Busby Babes at Old Trafford 1950’s
Beating Leeds 5-0 at Elland Road in the Holloway era

Halifax Town away 0-1 win in the LDV setup a tie with Bolton in the next round. Good pitch invasion, and still got the cutting from the Gazette!
Seem to remember there were a few thousand pool there. Which was surprising for a night away game in this cup game.

Fred Pickering hat trick and much fun on Moor Park afterwards.

Blackpool XI v Liverpool 1983

1st game i went too

Check out some of the players on both sides
I was at that game (friendly to raise funds for the Mayoral Fund after the drowning tragedy)

I learned that night what an excellent right back Danny McGrain was. He was outstanding and made it look very easy (friendly or not)
We were doing OK until the 2nd half

One that’s always stuck in my mind was a random mid week home game against Plymouth in 2001 on our way to promotion from Div 3 / League 2 back up to Div 2 / League 1. Was a big game to keep up a good run as I recall and Richard Walker came on and scored an improbable looping header from the edge of the box in the last minute - scratching shed went mental. Felt like a huge result. Start of the decade of dreams…

Halifax 83/84?

I went with my older brother and cousin on a cold October night in 1987 to watch the pool play at Newcastle. It was a second leg cup tie, having won the first leg 1.0 at home. We scored first but sadly the excitement was short lived as we went on to lose 4-1. It was brilliant to see Gazza though! Returning to the car, after the game, the window of our car had been smashed and the radio nicked. It was a long, freezing drive back home ..

It might even have been the round before, Northern QF. I think we beat Scarborough at home to set up the Bolton game. Pitch invasion was quality, big drop down over the advertising boards onto a gravel slope, used for Speedway I think back in the day. Couldn't get back over on the way back up, too steep.

Some good ones on this thread.
Ipswich League Cup 1978.
Middlesborough away twice League and FA Cup 1986
Newcastle away League Cup 1987
Halifax away Freight Rover 1989.
Stoke away 1993

Two more from me.

PNE away Anglo Scottish Cup 1980. My first away game, we had more there that day than they did. Full of optimism for the new season under Alan Ball.

Wolves at home 1976. Players taken off the pitch due to missiles being thrown from the Kop by Wolves fans, crowd of over 20,000. My first season.

Blackpool 3 Stockport 2 in April 1991 was a cracker.
I was at that game for my stag do. There was about 15 of us including one unfortunate Stockport fan. After the game we headed up town, but were met by a group of 30 or so Stockport fans who blocked us in down a street. Luckily the mounted police arrived and got them to disperse. The rest of the day is a blur.

Most memorable game would be the play off win against Cardiff, but it's not really a random Game.

So I'll go with the 1-0 Away win at Stoke in March 1993. Due to injuries, Neil Bailey (youth team coach) played alongside Gary Briggs as CB and they both had brilliant games. Trevor Sinclair slotted the ball past Bruce Grobbelaar in the 89th minute.

We were in danger of relegation and Stoke were top of the table and unbeaten at the time.

For me probably the most memorable away league game (I didn't get hit by the flying coins either, so even better)

First away game i ever took my then 10 year old son to,he came home with a good few quid in his pocket and proceeded to tell his mum how he got it,she nearly stopped him going to football games.

The infamous Rochdale away game, remember being amazed at some of the stuff that was going on. And the promotion night at Darlington, my one and only trip to anyway game in the back of a removal van

We went to most away games from St.Annes in a Lytham van hire that year, great days.

Preston wasn’t a random game,it’s probably the highlight of my time watching the Pool up there with the Play Off Final with Cardiff
