Accrington Stanley v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 19.12.20

Blackpool performance of real character. Despite not being at their best, a poor pitch, awful weather conditions and against a side continually trying to influence the referee, they achieved a well earned point. As others have said a short while ago they would have lost that game. They have come a long way in a short period of time.

We've tightened up at the back mainly.

It was a lot more than tightening up at the back. It was also about dealing with the significant disciplinary issues, becoming more streetwise ,putting players in their natural positions and creating more movement and opportunities in the final third. They are succeeding in all of this and making us so proud of them.

It might have been the wind, or even the rain, but far too many balls from defence were hit too hard,
or out on the wings and getting an Accy throw in.
A point is a good result.
Accy manager was moaning about a penalty they should have had. In his opinion of course. 🤨

The improvement at the back has helped the disciplinary stuff, because defenders are less exposed. It was rash tackles. We've had plenty of movement up front all season. I do think it's mainly about tightening up at the back. I enjoy watching us defend more than watching us attack at the moment. We are much better at defending. And the stats prove it really.

Your opinion that, I didn’t notice any improvement. Dougall looked overran, because he was effectively doing two men’s work.
What game was you watching?
We played 442 with two wide players in the midfield leaving both our centre midfielders outnumbered by their 352, it meant 3 on 2 in the centre of midfield.
We should have overloaded them on the flanks but we failed to really test them there.
Hamilton and Turton failed to combine going forwards as did Garbo and Anderson, I think a lack of quality outballs to the wings and the conditions made it tough for us today as it didn't suit Anderson or Hamilton passing and dribbling style.

We should have got an extra man into the centre and used our wing backs, maybe Gabriel instead of Turton (who defended well), to give width

It's strange isn't it, because traditionally we've never been particularly good defensively even in our promotion seasons. But yesterday some of our last ditch defending was absolutely superb and I enjoyed that as much as anything!

We are frustrating as an attacking team. Moves break down all the time. Needs some surgery. Or a new part and a rewire or something. At the back we are functioning very well. Not rock solid against big teams that are direct, but it's a Championship defence in the making, possibly. The central defenders in particular are quick and time tackles well etc. They look confident now too.

Fact not opinion - he is returning from a lengthy injury, he improved a lot 2nd half and we were over run in midfield as they had 5 across the middle.

If the final ball had been better we would have created far more chances. I will give the benefit of the doubt to a very wet pitch. I think it was one of those games and pitches, where 433 might have been a better shout. Particularly as both Hamilton and Anderson are not defensively minded.

We seemed to handle every other team we’ve started with 4-4-2 against 3 in midfield. Granted they made life hard by their constant pressing, but having Virtue in there didn’t help for a number a reasons his inability to be able to put his foot on the ball and find a man in tangerine being the main one.

Nope, still opinion.

If we hadn’t misplaced so many passes and final balls we would have scored I think. We didn’t and we’re made to work for the draw. I’m not convinced we would have done any better on the goal scoring with 433 on the day.

Thinking back to Saturday, although we hit the post, and created a few other chances, I feel that we were a bit fortunate not to lose. The longer the match went on, the more I cringed everytime Accrington attacked, and I was relieved at the final whistle. The weather was foul and the referee was worse. That was the one thing that really annoyed me. In the first half, when Accrington were getting stuck into our lads, the referee never gave us any protection and just kept waving play on. My 'flabber was gasted' by the ridiculous booking when I thought CJ had been put through. The second half, when we competed more strongly became a succession of free kicks for Accrington. I was very impressed at how Maxwell commanded his area and thought it was his best overall match for us.
Onwards and upwards for The Mighty Pool.

Interesting view and I partly agree but I thought we fully deserved the point. Maxwell did perform really well, his handling was excellent in tricky conditions. But Accy never really gave him any serious shots to save. I thought we defended really well, and had the cleaner chances in fact, hitting the post for one of them. The right result for me. I thought the ref was ok too, good first half, got fussier in the second but you could put that down to protecting the players in slightly dangerous conditions. Maybe the managers had a word at half time, perhaps.
