Adult child coming back home

From September it looks like I have an adult child (27) and grandchild coming home to live with me.
Lack of available rental properties and rental prices have brought this on.
I’m good with it, she could save 10k in 12 months by no longer paying rent and saving on bills. And I love my girls more than life itself, which I’m sure I’ve mentioned many times 😉
Any tips from those who have had a boomerang child coming back home ?
Just do what you have done for 27 years LaLa 👍

Kids today eh? I could have moved back in any time I'm sure but wouldn't have been able to handle the merciless piss taking from my Dad.

It was so much easier to buy a house 25 years ago, even in Lytham. if I was in my early 20s now I don't think Id bother at all, I really rail against thinking I'm getting ripped off.

It’s either that or pay rent that costs more than a mortgage with nothing at the end of it all though FY.
It does seem a hell of a lot harder these days, and some choose never to buy it seems. I think when you’re brought up with the expectation of owning it’s a mindset you’re stuck with.

Yeah, only in this country though, the rest of the world don't seem to care about owning, you're right about renting, £600 for a two bed semi that costs about half of that in mortgage payments.

Also at the cheaper end now it's all these 'modern auctions' so no one actually knows how much the house will cost.

Get her to open a Lifetime ISA. She can put up to £4k into it each tax year and the Government gives 25% on everything saved. The interest is paid about 6 weeks after the deposit. Only drawback is you have to use it to buy a house otherwise you forfeit the interest, but if that's what she is saving for its a no brainer.
Cracking advice. 👍
£75 p/w “rent” paid by DD into Lifetime ISA account, plus the interest is £4,875 per year. In 2yrs she would have enough for a deposit.
That money could be saved from cutting back on things she doesn’t really need - e.g. do people really need to upgrade to the latest mobile every 1 or 2 years? Not really. Especially when saving for a deposit.
Is there anything you can sell online - eBay / Shpock to get cash? Will help you both de-clutter when she brings all her stuff over and it’s more money into the savings pot.

Enjoy the time you all have together again. 🙂

I'm a big fan of helping them out now financially if you can as i wont be around to hear our will being read out.

Good advice - the detail is only slightly off

you can also use the saved funds for pension use which retains the bonus as well.

During COVID you can actually withdraw it with only a part penalty.

When I was younger I left home three ish times, the final time I left when I was about 22, I went back to see my mum and dad a couple of days later - to find my bedroom completely re-decorated and all the stuff I left in bags 😂😂😂😂😂👍😂

A good few years later I remember telling my mum and dad I was getting divorced, and the conversation went like this…

Dad: ‘you can move home if you want’
Me: ‘as much as I love you both and thank you for the offer, hell would have to freeze over before I moved back in here’
Dad: ‘Good, and that’s what I thought you would say - but I had to offer!’ 😂😂😂
Mum: ‘is there anything we can do to help’
Me: ‘still any good at washing and ironing?’
Mum: ‘of course it will be a pleasure’
Me: just well happy at that point 😎😎👍

….and that is genuinely how the conversation went 😂😂👍👍👍👍

I have to say my mum and dad were amazing at this point - they used to come up on a Tuesday, empty the wash basket and return it fully ironed on a Thursday. When they were up on a Thursday they emptied the wash basket and returned it fully ironed on the Tuesday.

They were brill 👍👍👍👍👍

…but that’s what good parents do, they just help their kids (as I do my lad) anyway possible ❤️

I agree.
Unfortunately not all parents sing from the hymn sheet you prescribe to.
Sounds like you had quality parents, and doing your laundry like that was an added bonus , not the norm !!!
