Advice, Travelling to Scotland with Overnight stay

Mrs Lime, has to pick up a new car, however the nearest we could find what she wanted was Glasgow!! They can't deliver. Mrs Lime needs the car for work.

So we intend to drive directly to a Premier Inn near the dealers, stay in our room, have a meal delivered to our room. In the morning drive to the dealers, pick up the car then drive immediately back to the Gold Coast in the morning?

Discuss? Advice??

Have tried to read the .gov website, but nothing seems to include or exclude our scenario

Sorry haven’t a clue...but make sure before you go as I bet the Scottish police will be sat on the M74 welcoming you....

There was a ban on travelling to and from Scotland apart from the usual exceptional essential journeys.

1. Is picking up a car essential?
2. Have those regs been relaxed?

Plenty of car transportation firms out there. I had a car delivered from Oxford bout 10years ago, cost £100. But it was arranged by the garage. Surely they can sort it and at a trade price.

There and back in a day? Easy run, particularly if 2 drivers. I'm 2.5 hours the other side of Glasgae and do it to TGC in a day for matches.

BFC 3 is wrong (No!) The police are enforcing it on the M74. If you do it, make sure you have documents about where you are going.

Picking up a car is one of the exceptions but no overnight stays are permitted.

“"The Chief Constable has said publicly on numerous occasions that we will not be routinely stopping vehicles or setting up road blocks, and that will not change as a result of travel restrictions now being in law.”

Several weeks ago the police certainly were out in force on the M6 at Carlisle ( junction 44) pulling vehicles over and asking the questions of why your vehicle is heading North over the border.
Thats not in place anymore, but Gretna Gateway shopping village just over the border are policing and stopping customers at the entrance and asking for residential ID before allowing you in.

I' not advocating doing this....I'm just saying

I have 3 or 4 'Front Line Worker' letters that have been given to me over the last few months
I was only stopped once, going to Preston....and proudly pulled my letter out and handed it to the nice Policeman on Blackpool Old Road
He looked at it...Looked at me......Looked at the letter again and said...."Did you write this yourself"

NO....I said......He just gave it back and off he went....I had never really looked at it before and when I did it was just a plain A4 saying I was a front line worker, with no address, NHS logo etc.....I could have just written it myself....In fact anyone could just write themselves a letter....what can they do?

I'm collecting a car for work, which will help those in care/Covid19 vaccination/OAP etc. etc......

Mrs Lime is an NHS worker who needs it to transport vulnerable adults, & generally for her work, the vehicle she needed is not available locally, just hope we dont get stopped, as its a whole load of differing views??

Even if they won't sort it out surely @Limechase could arrange it for himself.

Even for about £200 it's likely cheaper than the cost of doing it himself and avoids any potential covid problems.

I work for a motor dealership and we deliver all over the country. Especially as showrooms have been closed so you can buy online, Poor form from the garage that they can’t deliver it.

If the vehicle is required to transport vulnerable adults, doesn't the collection of the vehicle constitute an essential journey? As stated above, if you have the documentation as proof then surely you can't be penalised even if you are stopped. Is there a contact number for the Scottish authorities so you can advise them in advance to avoid the anxiety of being penalised? Presumably the garage could provide the number as you're unlikely to be the only people collecting a vehicle.

I agree. A friend of mine delivers new cars all over the country for his main job. It's the "normal thing" for dealerships to offer this service (perhaps with a cost ) as I understand it.
If you stay overnight in Scotland , you are technically breaking the current rules. Whether the o/p wants to risk that (probably very small chance of being caught) is up to them. Think as the he posted on this forum about it, he knew this was the case really - but hoped not😬

No it doesn’t...

The list of exceptions are not exclusive... They are just “Examples of...”
I'm not arguing with you, just stating a fact. There is a list of exceptions, see ScotGov website. I've just crossed it about 25 mins ago. No police anywhere. I had to check my journey was legal, just in case.

It wasn’t a fact though, that’s the point...

Firstly the ScotGov website does not necessarily reflect the legal requirements, but a combination of Government Advisory & Legal Requirements.

Secondly, you can enter Scotland with any ‘Reasonable Excuse’ and the list of examples provided is not exhaustive.

You can find the actual legislation here...

If you see a small ginger politician thumbing a lift back to England then give her a ride.

We could do with someone like her in England apparently.

The old saying you pay your money you take the chance.

There is a reason my wife hasn't seen family for over 12 months because it was the right thing to do and won't until accommodation currently unavailable is.

BFC3 giving out misleading advice. I am not writing from a theoretical point of view, I know people who have been stopped and ticketed, some traveling between different Council areas, never mind across the border. ANPR makes motorway and major road checks very easy.

Lime, providing you take the paperwork proving its for your wife's job, you should be fine. Could you not get temporary insurance for the day so you could share the driving and do it in a day. Should be 2.5 to 3 hours each way?

You’re talking tosh Moss...

And clearly unlike yourself, I’ve actually been on the roads 😂

Why didn’t you ask the people you were buying the car off first? Or get them to check as they would have wanted the sale.

A pretty comprehensive list of reasonable excuses and all as found on Scot Gov site.

Nope, that's your bag.

I talk to people who come through our village, I personally know people who have ignored the rules and been fined, and have spoken to a couple of the local bobbies who are enforcing it.

They were stopping people near the border a while back, but things seem more relaxed now, i can see the m74 from my house and it does seem there is a lot more traffic on it now.

Dare I ask what’s so special about the car you need to travel to jock land to get...?
Nothing will happen if you do, just wondered?....😎

I wouldn’t describe either list as particularly comprehensive. In fact the legislation clarifies that it isn’t comprehensive.

They're examples... So any reasonable excuseveill

Your openly admitting that you are basing your advice on hearsay.

One minute you’ve heard from a few people you know, next you’re claiming to be speaking to ‘local bobbies’

I’m sure there are odd circumstances where the Police might pull people over, however they are not actively monitoring the borders, they are not operating active anpr monitoring for Covid in the motorways and the number of Police on the major roads is extremely low. I’ve seen less Police on the roads in the past few months than I can ever remember...

You’d have to be extremely unlucky to get pulled over as there’s zero ‘active monitoring’ going on.. So literally you’re talking about a chance close encounter with a Police vehicle who then happens to be bothered to check you out in ANPR......

And of course... even in those circumstances, collecting a vehicle is a perfectly ‘reasonable excuse’ in any case.

They did the same everywhere... The Police go heavy handed early doors, the press picks up on it and then most people comply because they think that’s going to be the norm...

I think they must all have been on Holiday for the past couple of months...

Just a thought, is there anything wrong with the train?

3 hours or so on the train, take a book, have lunch and a bit of a wander then pick the car up and drive home, doesn't sound overly taxing to me.

Presumably the Transport Police just dive on and arrest everyone as the train crosses the border?😃

The police are always on the M74 in Dumfries and Galloway, usually looking for speeding motorists. It's very unusual not to see them. Didn't see any today though.

I am never less than amazed how you know what is going on in another country, and call direct conversation hearsay. If you want to know what's going on in Scotland, ask one of the Tangerines who live there, not make stuff up.

We have seen plenty of Police around here, far more than normal as they have less other stuff to do at present, doing road and holiday home checks. Maybe they have sent all yours to us.

Like I’ve said, they’ve been conspicuous by their absence on the motorways recently...

Is this what it is like in North Korea?
It’s also like Escape to Victory.
Make sure you put your khaki gear on before you go and don’t forget your ID badges.

It’s hearsay.. You’ve clearly been nowhere near the M74
