For me one important lesson to take away from this is not to believe any bollux about the PL, UEFA and FIFA being the moral guardians of the game and the defenders of the interests of the fans.
Essentially this was a battle between two very rich and influential groups over a pot load of money. Ok the interests of the PL and Sky may have aligned with the interests of the fans on this occasion but that doesn’t mean they are the same.
As has been said we need proper governance and regulation, which certainly isn’t the same as organisations run by owners and designed to protect their interests.
Put forward arguments for salary caps, shareholder remuneration (so football money stays in football), caps on ST prices and free to view TV and see how the “moral guardians” respond.
Wise words Mex.
Sky, UEFA et al are not our allies. Supporters are consumers first and decoration second. UEFA, PL, Sky et al are sat there shaking their heads at the Super League, not because the concept betrays the idea of competitive sport and what makes football special to people, but because the Super League misjudged the customer base.
Football might be a business as much as a sport now, but there is no other business where, for the vast majority, the 'product' people buy is based on captive consumers who will not change to another 'product' for anything.
Football isn't like buying a TV or a car. Yes you might like particular brand of TV more than others but if a much better/faster/shinier product was available you wouldn't think twice about buying the better/faster/shinier one.
People don't stick with a TV where the picture might only look good every 30 years or more when the stars align and conditions are just right. People don't stay with their slightly rubbish, frustrating old TV because it was the brand they fell in love with the first time they saw a live programme. Or because it is the brand their parents and grandparents love, and their mates. Or because it's the brand that was made in the town and loved by it and part of it. And because of those things you love it more than you ever could any other TV, and sometimes too much and sometimes even when you hate how it makes you feel and you know you shouldn't.
That is why football in this country needs protection because this is about love and not money, however soppy that might sound. If what we love isn't protected then money will kill it and something good will die a little bit more.
