Anyone else slowly starting to despise the prem?

Robbie makes fair point re NFL and charity.

Like all major american sporting bodies the NFL makes a massive contribution - donations and wide ranging supporting initiatives - but I think it's fair to say that the Premier League does its bit when compared to other sporting bodies within the UK.

I am sure they could always do more but I'd imagine the continued success of the Premier League will help ensure that they continue to make progress on that front and increase their already sizeable commitments.

If anyone is watching this second half in the Arsenal V City game you’ll know exactly what I mean. City were brilliant first 15 mins, since the game has been dead. Awful

Is that the NFL that screws over it's fans by moving it's franchise.

Fcuk the fans, we don't give a damn about you.
That could never happen here.

Arsenal started in Woolwich of course, Man U in Newton Heath.

MK Dons.

The franchise owns the brand and can move where they want and do. Different set up.

Of course Woolwich is in London and Newton Heath is in Mcr. Same cities. Why not quote West Ham moving then?, the franchise owns the brand and can move where they want and do. Glad you acknowledge that. Fcuk the fans you are leaving behind but hey that's all right with you. Rich owners eh!

Wonder why our home crowds rise the higher up the leagues we go/went.
When has that not been the case though? The argument that the top tier is the top tier isn't an argument for the institution of the Premier League is it?

And still, regardless, more people watch football every week outside of the Premier League than within it so the notion that it is somehow so much more attractive than any other aspect of the game is nonsensical.

It's an overhyped div 1 with a new name and shit loads of marketing thrown at it.

Without even going into the absurd money involved at that level, in the last few weeks I’ve started to hate watching premier league football.
I’m not sure whether it’s the frequency in which games are being played, the lack of fans, or something else, but I’m really struggling to enjoy most of the games I watch.
The Southampton vs Chelsea game yesterday was probably one of the worst games I’ve watched all season. Lack of quality in final third, pointless, aimless passing side to side, and neither side really trying to win in the final 20 minutes.
There seem to have been lots of games like this so far as well. Man United have drawn 0-0 with Arsenal, City and Liverpool despite having one of the best attacking set ups in the division imo.
It all just seems so tirelessly technical, to the point where it becomes frustrating to watch.
One of my mates is a blades fan, and he can’t wait to be back in the championship, and I can genuinely understand why. The only sides I’ve consistently enjoyed watching at that level are Leeds, Villa and Leicester. The rest are either forced to play dreadful football as a result of the huge financial gulf that exists between the top/bottom sides in the division, and most of the games I’ve watched between the the big boys seem to follow a pattern of ‘let’s completely out pass each other while it’s 0-0, and then depending on who scores first we’ll decide our style of play from there’.

Maybe I’ve just been watching too much football because there’s nothing else to do, or perhaps the game is suffering more than I realise without supporters, but atm most games at the top level in this country are absolutely dire to watch.
Rather watch our league or lower at least you get honest players.

Has a college team got the chance to become one of the thirty two? Burnley, Southampton and Palace have all had the chance to become one of the eighteen. And they still are. As have over half the 92 clubs. So is the NFL more of a closed shop than football in this country? It would seem so.
No. It’s a closed shop of 32 franchises owned by Billionaires.
The one thing that does keep it interesting is the Draft system where the worst teams of the 32 get to sign the best players from the College leagues.
This ensures that if you are bad for long enough, sooner or later you’ll get enough good kids to be best again. 😁 That along with a team salary cap stop one team using financial muscle to beat the rest.
In reality a few teams Buck the trend (Patriots with Brady being one example) but over time pretty much all of the 32 will become league champs (Super Bowl winners)

Sadly there’s no relegation or promotion though so you cannot climb the pyramid and live the dream

But that's my point. Fans want to watch their team in the highest division possible and in our case and no doubt every other club who as played in the PL case as well. It really is inverted snobbery to look down on the PL and to think that as a fan you are better than a fan of a PL team.

Eh? I've literally not made any point in any sense that suggests I am better than any other fan.

I bet all you complainers wish we were riding high in the Premier League.

Yesterdays game at Pompey would not have been exciting for anyone but Pool fans.
Portsmouth also tried the diving and screaming antics.

You lot are getting to much of a good thing by showing games every day and night.

I have zero interest in the prem unless BFC are in it.
So you're not really a football fan then.

You're last para is spot on. For instance I could be born and raised in Orlando and proud of my city but when it comes to NFL I'm always gonna always have to settle for second best. Or I could support the Dolphins at NFL, Orlando Magic at basketball with Miami Heat as my hated rivals. So I love Miami for NFL but hste them for basketball. Not even mentioned baseball yet!

Eh? I've literally not made any point in any sense that suggests I am better than any other fan.
It was a general point. This was Robbie's comment earlier.

"But the EPL as a whole has been absurdly over-hyped for a long time. It's football for people who don't really "get" football, and probably never will."

What a condescending arrogant inverted snob he is!

I made some points, you answered them by answering another poster?

There are too many teams who play with negative tactics, also the fact that the gap between top and bottom is getting bigger each season.

Never understand why teams don't play with wingers, some of Blackpool's better seasons are when we've had two wingers, Eyres & Rodwell and Ince and Phillips.

Playing one up front should be banned and a team should be forced to have two on the halfway line when defending a corner instead of having all 11 players in their own area.

It would be great if a team brought back the good old 2-3-5 formation that was used from the start of football until the 50's/60's.

Love this!

Well I like the premier league and watch it all the time. I wasn't brought up on an inverted snobbery to just be interested in certain leagues below , we were interested in all football in our house. I retain an interest from the national leagues to the premiership and if there's a game on and I'm free I'll watch it.I remember as a kid getting the Sunday paper and pouring over all the leagues and results and I still do it today. I like football and I don't feel guilty about it . As usual on threads like this 20s is the only one I agree with.
Off to watch Man U and Newcastle now.

Because the move took them right across the city. That's why I didnt mention West Ham because they're still in the East of London.

Wimbledon to Milton Keynes 70 miles yet doesnt get a mention because it doesnt support your argument.

And inverted snobbery isn't an issue. I think we're the greatest team in the world and wouldn't want to support anyone else, regardless of League status

I have had little interest in the Premiership for many years. I was especially disgusted that clubs could travel into Europe to play a football match but people can not visit family and friends. I am glad the leagues are playing but is European football that essential - oh yes, money.

Reading some of the comments above, it would seem I have to enjoy watching, for example, North End otherwise "I'm not a fan of football". Utter, utter nonsense.

I'm love one team. I know what's going on across the rest of football, of course, but do I enjoy it as much? Not at all. I simply don't have the emotional investment, nor do I want it.

Eh? I've literally not made any point in any sense that suggests I am better than any other fan.
You started your post with "when is that not the case though" I was making the point that it seems some on here are happy for us to be a L1 team. They think their value as a fan is more kudos than a PL fan.

Lost interest in it personally, for many of the reason stated above. I used to watch motd religiously on a Saturday night and knew most of the players and what was going on. I now look at the results but that's about it. This may sound a strange comment but I just don't seem to be able to relate to the players in the way I used to. Not sure why exactly, maybe I'm just getting older...

That said, if we got back up there I'd be delighted. One of my proudest moments as a pool fan was watching us play City at home in our prem season - they were probably the best team in the country at the time and we met them as equals, more than matched them and should have won were it not for poor refereeing decisions favouring the "big club" - another reason to dislike the PL.

The PL is shit, it's been shit for years, apart from when we were in it! 😉

I haven't watched a PL game for years, it doesn't interest me in the slightest. I will never forget being in a pub in Finsbury Park before our game in 2010 I had arrived late so missed the pre match meet up.There were 2 pubs opposite each other across a busy main road. Both full of Arsenal supporters and the place was absolutely rocking, I thought "this can't be Arsenal?" So I started speaking to a group of Arsenal fans and asked them how come it was like this here yet the ground had the reputation for being a 'Library'? The shocking answer was that, simply, none of the supporters in the pubs were going to the game, they couldn't get season tickets, priced out and all those in the ground were what Robbie so accurately described then as. The rich and the wonderful, the wealthy London foreigners, very few 'real supporters' they were all going to watch the game in the pub.

That for me, summed it up, and it's not just Arsenal, it's the majority of PL teams.

So, the sooner the big 6 or 8 fuck off to their mega money Euro, world league the better and the sooner football is governed properly and the English leagues return to the people the better it will be. I loved our season in the PL, we really were a breath of fresh air, but now? Would I want it again? Not as it is, but when it has changed then yes, very much so.
Got ya, Ill let you pass on the message to Herts what you think of him as a Spurs fan, 😉

Half the reason folk moan about the PL is because us Brits are a bunch of tight fisted gets and don't want to pay for something that was free with the cost of a subscription yet are willing to hand over money to the likes of Netflix and Amazon.

We never had football in the past just the odd game so that puts to be the myth about getting football pre PL no we didn't so it comes with a price and the argument always peddled out that it's not best league is absolute nonsense it's the most competitive as you only have to look at Germany(Bayern)Spain(Madrid/Barca)France(PSG)Italy(Juventus) who win it nearly every year yet we've had five different winners in the last ten years and if anyone could name the top four before the start of the season you'd be a Clairvoyant.

The league's in Europe are absolute garbage where the bottom half teams would struggle in the Championship yet if Brighton for example turned up to any of the top four tomorrow they'd give them a game, people like to knock our PL but it's the most watched league in the world for a reason as more people tune in to watch Man Utd V Liverpool than the Superbowl.

Funny that. So many people talk about their memories of the PL and would like to go to a place they can't stand.

I'm enjoying watching Leicester play. Great manager with a fantastic pool of players. If it wasn't for City being just too good, we could be talking about another Leicester title.

The prem in general isn't watchable but I suppose football without fans isn't in any division, including Blackpool. I'm not enjoying it like I should. Watching Blackpool from a laptop week in week out just isn't for me

I watch through a Firestick on my TV but get what you mean at least Portsmouth had some production yesterday with different camera angles. 😁

One thing I despise about the Premiership is BBC's coverage with the likes of Big Ears. Football Focus hardly mentions Football outside of the Premier League. At least Quest try and keep the flag flying. I watched a bit of the Dingles against West Brom and it was mind numbing.

I'd say the watershed is between PL and Championship. Above, it's an industry run for maximum profit, frequently for anonymous overseas owners. When was there last a fan-owned club with a sniff of a chance at making the PL? Or or even a club with proper fan representation. Championship downwards, people start to matter. (And players don't cheat.)

When our little club played you in the Cup, we had two lads on loan from QPR, getting hopefully some valuable experience for them, and helping us massively. QPR, good football people, are just charging us the travelling expenses. The other Sussex club that Pool played in the Cup, last time we took a player from them, they charged us £500 a week for the privilege. And yet they have 21 players on over £1m annual salary. (Lallana is on £4.7m).

It's the Premier League. And the rest of us.

Have the BBC ever talked about clubs away from the top division?
Quest are just showing something on the cheap that's why they show Snooker nothing to do with flag flying.

Well i watched football focus at the weekend and they did a whole feature on Crewe and their manager. The time before i saw it they did a piece on Oldham and Harry Kewell.

And those are all the things that turn so many of us off it.

I’ve watched quite a lot of South American football and there’s a gulf in entertainment. They are skilful, attack minded, run their hearts out, tackle hard, get up without moaning, the ref often waves play on, nowhere near as much cheating / feigning injury / time wasting. Basically like we used to see in the U.K. before the 90’s.

Dull dull dull. I said the other day. Hardly a decent English style attacking match. Flat passing across the back. Very boring

I think the lack of crowds is affecting the game. I don't watch much of the EPL these days, I watch the odd match or highlights. I'm not into knocking it, every club and set of fans wants their club in the premier league.

I've been fairly open about what I think of the prem and the financial arrangements involved.

Of course I'd like to see us in the top flight but I don't see the way the top flight is now as any more attractive or exciting than it was in say 1991. In fact, for several reasons, I find it less interesting than I did then, not least as I believe, as I have written about at length*, it is essentially fixed financially.

All of that aside, (and yes, it's still more competitive than some of the other big leagues, but I've never been a hipster type that follows German and Spanish football) I did used to watch the highlights quite regularly and listen to it live on the radio a lot.

Over the last couple of years, I've just stopped. I listened to the second half of the merseyside derby and I think that's possibly it for the season.

VAR has been a nail in the coffin in terms of my interest. It's made the game into something akin to dungeons and dragons** (I've nicked this from a meme) which boring people argue over the finer points of the rules to the point that I literally don't give a fuck any more.

I've watched more scottish football this year than I have English top flight. Again, that's not a conscious decision in particular, it's just that outside of Celtic/Rangers it tends to be quite evenly matched and competitive and they don't have VAR and it comes on my telly more often than English stuff does. (Cos I only have freeview)

* See below
** yes, I'm hypocritical.
I only have Freeview and I haven't spotted the Scottish footie. Can you point me to it, I might give it a go.

NFL seems like handing over big chunks of your life to advertising to me. If a 60 minute game takes over 3 hours summat is wrong! 🤣 But I found out yesterday that my 17 year old neighbour has won a sports scholarship at a College in Connecticut, paid for by the NFL. And she's a swimmer. It would be good if the Prem used more of its money in constructive ways rather than paying lads £10 million a year etc.

I'm not a fan of VAR. I wanted it brought in but I was wrong. Goal line technology is enough, I think. I get pissed off by a lot of penalty decisions too. Winning penalties is a big aspects of the game now. A skill to be learnt in training.

When is it not the case that the higher you go in a league structure, the crowds rise? That's always been the case.

Every time someone questions the structure of the top flight the old chestnut of "you lack ambition" comes out. I don't. I want Blackpool to win every trophy going.

I just don't agree with the way top flight finances are arranged. That's a totally different argument from 'I like league 1'

Tbh, I think there is some truth to the idea that the Premier League isn't simply for football fans. It's at least partly about creating stable and predictable brands so sponsors and the sort of corporations who invest in exec boxes can invest with a degree of confidence and those clubs remain consistently attractive on a global stage.

Bbc Scotland has a championship match every 3 weeks or so. I think they're usually on Friday night.

BBC Scotland have Fri night games.
Caley Jags v Hearts this week

Yep, think plenty of people have criticised us for that this season. All square passing along the back line. And we're in L1.

You started your post with "when is that not the case though" I was making the point that it seems some on here are happy for us to be a L1 team. They think their value as a fan is more kudos than a PL fan.

Once again you fail to appreciate the points that are being made to you. Expressing dissatisfaction with the EPL does not equate to being "happy" to be a L1 team. It's merely an observation that the EPL is a League that badly needs some improvements ; a League where the fan who attends matches in person is ripped off, messed about and generally treated like a second class citizen compared with the "fan" who sits at home and consumes the product from his sofa.

In fact, the EPL seems to be run entirely for the convenience of the people on the sofa. And many of those people don't understand the match experience as most of us know it. They wouldn't dream of travelling 50/100/500 miles for every home game ; they probably feel a bit faint when they are sitting out of sight of the fridge. It feels like the tail wags the dog ; indeed, if there is one good thing that has come out of COVID it is that people now have a better appreciation of how empty an experience watching football is without a crowd to give the game atmosphere and a sense of occasion. Hence my point about people who don't "get" football.

Have you ever stopped to consider whether it is YOU who is out of step with everyone else? After all, you are the bloke who supports Blackpool but has a second team in the EPL. Most people I know who follow football closely don't do that, and would baulk at the very idea of it.
