Ashes 5th test Official match thread

The question I'd ask is what are you trying to do hanging your bat out there on a rising ball? I mean there is no way you'd get any runs doing that, all that can happen is you edge it to the keeper or slips, just clueless.
Yep. It’s because he doesn’t have an idea of what he is leaving or hitting on the pitch. If they bowl in X zone, I’m leaving it. When you don’t have that you are always reactive in test cricket.

Bethell is the new James Vince btw. Perfect technique. Just not good enough.

It's hard to get enthused about the future of our test team when you see them repeating the same old mistakes. They're not even really playing with much energy here, just making the usual bad choices.

Benny Duckett is lining up a 'celebrity swap' with Eddie Duckworth, the working title is along the lines of
"Can you ref? Can you bat? I cant either

Yes but lets not forget Bethell is a young lad thrown in at number three (because we haven't got a viable alternative at three) when he really should be batting at six.

For me the kid is very talented and will go on to be a top player for England, he's been handled very poorly by England in terms of game time, once he gets in the groove watch him fly.

Thread stopped as soon as we got on top, no surprises...
Bad light stopped play and we had that in Layton even with the Wolf moon last night, so its perfectly understandable.
Worse when the sun just sets behind St Marks at this time of year, so I've every sympathy with a guy trying to swing his bat.

I had completely forgotten about this match.

Going to catch the highlights shortly. How many more years can we squeeze out of Joe Root to help the new generation come through and to understand that playing test cricket as test cricket is how to accumulate massive scores?

It stopped play about 3 hours after the last post.

This Ashes series (and the lack of thought/preparation given to it by the ECB) has impacted on my interest in cricket generally. The team (and increasingly the sport) seem to exist in an elitist bubble, which wasn’t the case when I was growing up.

I was amused/outraged to see Hampshire are marketing membership of a “Priority Club” costing £35 which will give you first dibs after members to 2027 Ashes tickets at the Rose Bowl - and absolutely nothing else.

They can eff right off on that. As it stands the series can eff off as well given the price of tickets.

One other thing - in what other team sport than cricket is a player brought into the national team with very limited experience of playing the sport at the senior level below the national team? And having barely played in the last year?

I feel sorry for Jacob Bethell, he is on a hiding to nothing, you cannot learn the game at Test Match level.

When the managing director of England cricket tells us that the squad have performed at 20% of maximum, you have to ask the question why...the answer starts with him. The England 70s squad are about to depart on a Silver Ashes and World Cup trip to Australia and New Zealand and I'd say we are set up to perform at a better level that 20%, well anyone would be would't they?

Good day for us although it has to be said the top 3 weren't up to much. God help us when Root retires. Still a good day all things considered.

An encouraging current position but plenty to do yet.
Let`s hope the two Yorkies can pick up where they left off tomorrow. It would certainly ease the pain of not regaining the Ashes a little if we can win this one.

As for the cynical comment re no more posts for 3 hours after we started doing well.In fact posts stopped at 1.30am two and a half hours earlier precisely when the play broke for lunch and no doubt most posters on here (apart from me) went to bed .

I think we need to think long and hard about Duckett as the opening partner for Crawley, he cannot help himself but try to get his bat on everything and when you're faced with a bright new ripe cherry which is moving around at 90 mph then you are not going to last long.

Asa Tribe is a bright young talent who may be fast tracked in to the squad and last season Ben McKinney is another opener who has shown great promise, both are 21 year olds and we should be developing players like these because we need them to be ready sooner rather than later.

You've got that one wrong pal, thread stopped because we all went to bed, well I certainly did.
That’s very true but for many years there have been more posts when we are doing bad than when we are doing well.

I’m hoping its because we don’t want to jinx a good spell in play rather than us all being miserable and negative 😃

Quite honestly it's no surprise the general tone on the Ashes threads on here has been pretty negative. That's what seeing your team completely throw away their best opportunity in years to win in Australia does. I'm still hoping we win this and put one over that gurning weirdo Steve Smith, but the stable door for the series is already hanging off its hinges and the horse is ten miles down the road

Jamie Smith with the streakiest 46 I've ever seen now throws his wicket away with probably the dumbest shot (and there's been plenty) of this Ashes series.

The lad is just out of his depth at this level it's as simple as that, how he got to 46 in the first place was astounding and then gifts his wicket just before lunch, simply mind boggling.

BTW, Lytham for the record I'm off to bed now and not "stopped posting when England are doing well", outside of that dumber than dumb shot from Smith we were doing pretty well.

A shot that perfectly captures why this tour has been such an amateurish fiasco. While Joe Root shows what could have been from the other end.

I agree about that terrible shot that Smith got out to but anyone who averages 40 in Test cricket as incidentally Duckett also does, surely can`t be out of his depth.

It's a good point 50s. I think the problem maybe is, he doesn't see off the new ball in the way an opener should. He races to a score then gets himself out rather than taking the edge off the bowlers?

Head and Labuschange bring up their 100 partnership and they now trail by 227
If England don't capitulate in their 2nd innings this is a draw.

Just as Labuschange holes out!! Aus 162-2

Another reason why the Aussies have retained the Ashes is the bowling we've witnessed again, while England have the outstanding Starc and Bowland to contend with, their batsmen can feast on to some simply awful bowling by our lot, Potts looked like he was one of the Barmy Army who'd won a "Play for England in the Ashes" competition, what a difference it would make if we had a Mitchell Starc on our side.

Yet another sub-par performance with the bat. That was a 500+ pitch they were batting on. I'll accept that the Day 1 rain delay was unfortunate in terms of timing, but once more we saw wickets thrown away. And once again, I'd put Brook down as a bigger issue than others. Smith has needed putting out of his obvious misery for 3 games at least, but can't as there's no alternative. Whereas Brook is supposed to be the big dog batter. The shot he got out to, wasn't even wild or reckless. It was just poor technical batting that gave up his wicket rather than being bowled out by the bowler.

What happens tonight then? Do we rally and keep them to a sensible total before building to a defendable lead? Or is this another test heading round the U bend?

We need the bowlers to actually put it in the right places. We were shocking yesterday

We are in a state of flux. Gone are the old stalwarts of Croad and Anderson and Stokes will soon be gone too. Our "fast" bowlers are made of glass so it is impossible to depend on them ever being fit and the back up crop are, frankly, bloody average. Take into account a batting line up that without Root is cavalier and stupid, a terrible wicket keeper who can't bat and no spinner worth their salt I would say the future of the England Test team is bleak.

We need to find some new players. Bowlers who are dangerous, clever and can put the ball in the right place constantly. We need Foakes to be wicket keeper/batsman, his omissions is one of the cricketing crimes of the century and we need to find batsmen who have more than 4 brain cells and their favourite word is "swish".

I think it's going to be several years until we are a force in Test cricket again.

Tonge) Bowling is all over the place again.
Potts 11 overs for 84 !
Now bowling medium pace bouncers to the nightwatchman. We've dropped a sitter from Head and just burned our last review. This is a truly atrocious England test side and performance on everything you can measure. If Australia's batsmen find their form against our pie throwers (not Stokes or Tonge who've done their best) this could end up an innings victory

Felt a bit sorry for Potts there, bowled a decent maiden. First of his next over Head put him in the second tier of the stand, just to remind him that he's getting a seeing to.

Smith and Green putting together a nice partnership here.
Defending the good balls, attacking the sloppy balls, you know, basic batting!!
