Australia scraps French submarine contract

There’s not much that annoys President Macron more than France losing a £43bn military contract, but losing it to the UK has apparently made him 'very bitter'. He's accused Australia of betrayal after it pulled out of its submarine supply agreement with France in order to forge closer ties with the UK and the US.

Together with the US the UK will now help Australia build nuclear-powered submarines instead of the relatively primitive diesel-powered vessels. These can stay submerged for longer, move faster and are almost undetectable when underwater.

In a statement, Macron complained that Australia’s decision is contrary to the letter and spirit of cooperation that prevailed between France and Australia. Michel Barnier added “This behaviour between allies is unacceptable”. French foreign affairs minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the decision by Australia was a “stab in the back”. However, the Franco-Australian deal was already facing problems with increasing tensions between French shipbuilder Naval Group and Australia over rocketing costs and unwanted design changes.

Meanwhile, the UK has announced the new deal as one of its most significant collaborations in years, particularly for the North West of England, with BAE Systems in Barrow and other local suppliers expected to receive a massive boost to the economy and employment. Boris Johnson said that the AUKUS alliance will bring the UK, US and Australia closer together, creating a new defence partnership and driving jobs and prosperity.

Does anyone see the irony of the French President complaining about Australia failing to recognise the spirit of cooperation between the two countries. Not really his own strong point is it?

Anyway, I await posters' congratulations to Boris and his government for a spectacular result.

Saw that on the news this morning. That’ll go a little way towards the trade gaps that Brexit may have caused?

Internet feeds being trawled with a frenzied paranoias .... the anti Boris warriors will rise to the challenge... tin hat time Tangojoe 😁

Just spoke to someone from BAE works at Warton he mentioned something about 110 Billion contract not sure if this is anything to do with it.

Wonderful , we are all so happy.

The reality is that the US and Australia could have sorted this between themselves. The U.K. wasn’t really needed.

But all credit to Boris for leveraging the “British Contribution”. Whether that translates into contracts and jobs in the U.K. has yet to be seen.

Let’s face it , we share a lot of similar values with Australia.
They didn’t need a Brexit because they didn’t tie themselves up with other nations rules and regs in the first place.

Their immigration policy as an island, is similar to what we are implementing, going forward. But they have the joys off not being called ‘racist’ for adopting such a policy by never having to detach themselves from a European state.

Nobody hates Australia.

As an island we are heading back towards the same principles they adhere to in many ways.
The Australian PM instigated this, so maybe our comparison as a nation contributed to this decision to dump the French deal and forge a new beneficial one with ourselves and the US.

Well said Lala 👍

Australia did actually detach itself from one European State... Britain.

And yet we don’t hold it against them, and don’t brand them racist 🤔 so why not be as forgiving on ourselves.

Even when forgiveness isn’t actually necessary.

We are following a lead maybe, or just expressing our own individual rights as a nation 👍
European Australians are born into racism inside their own country. They stem from a genocidal act that saw the indigenous population go from around 1 million to 60,000 and their way of life continues to suppress the indigenous people to this day. It's a bit rich that they of all people now try to have such tight borders.

So you personally do hate Australians as much as you hate the British then. That’s cool.

Why are the French not part of your hateful agenda ?
Have they a perfect history ?

What has stating facts to do with hate?
Hate is probably harsh.

Constantly deride the efforts and intentions of anyone or any nation that doesn’t comply to your personal agenda is probably a better definition.

Hate seemed a less convoluted and a less supercilious expression and I was trying to keep it simple.

Can't find anything to criticise UK for on this deal so let's join the French and slag off the Aussies instead.

Sounds like a classic bit of Aussie shithousery to me 😗
No marks for Boris on this one, he was probably asleep or in his club at the time. Always entertaining to see Macron getting his culotte dans une torsion though 👍

Sorry Frenchies - the US do not trust you with Nuclear secrets.

This is only the second country the US has shared this tech with and we are obviously the other one.

If you want old Diesel boats then buy off France, if you want shinny new Nuclear powered boats, and want to stick it to the Chinese come to the US and the UK - and if you are very good we might share the tech.

Macron need not apply!

One thing I did consider, is this a giant leap for Australia to become the owner of Nuclear weapons??

Isn't the Queen still head of State for Australia?
Yes, but it's no more than a title nowadays - still there due to how its constitution was originally set up. Republicans will eventually get rid of that like they almost did a few years ago.

They gained independence from Britain's crumbling wartime Empire in 1942 and the final legal ties ceased in 1986. The Queen now probably has just as much influence over 808 State.

You mean like those on here who constantly deride the French!

You really hate the UK don't you. It stands out with every post. You're one hateful, tormented prick. Why do you live in the UK?

There’s one big flaw in all this. Barrow!

Having spent a mere two years there working on their approach to programme management for the next generation Dreadnoughts, I gave up in despair. They blew £32m solely on our consultancy fees for redesigning how to do things on time and on cost. The irony seemed lost and the outcome was worse.

As a nation we are entrusting BAE to deliver a £40bn boat programme 😭

History…..
France brutalised the Huguenots
Spain brutalised the New World
Belgium the Congo
Holland the Suriname
Italy half the known world
Germany…..
Etc etc etc

There are almost no countries without blood on their hands

That’s all very true. The French also brutalised the Algerians until quite recently.

But that isn’t the point. LaLa claimed Australia wasn’t racist. BHOK simply reminded her of their history with the indigenous population. I didn’t think he claimed the French, or any other countries, were blameless.

Nuclear powered doesn't mean nuclear capability.

Well not to worry. I don’t think any contracts have been awarded under AUKUS yet. There’s an 18 month scoping exercise first.

You should know by now Lala BHOK hates everyone apart from the Fatherland. 🇩🇪

What a strange post. Nobody hates Australia? Who in their right mind hates any country, I personally dislike a lot about the Chinese regime but I don't hate China. Australia has a population of 25m and a small economy, we are aligning ourselves with a small nation on the other side of the world and you're happy because its pissed the French off. That's not a sentiment I could ever get behind.
Secondly your statement "they didn't tie themselves up with other nations regs and rules" is as ill informed as you can get. We wrote a fair bit of them, secondly the single market requires products are of equal standard, has anyone got an issue with that? It was that bad, strange how we have copied and pasted it straight across. When Australia sign up to trade deals (yes they do that you know) this involves signing up to other nations rules and regs, unfortunately with small economic muscle the terms they will get won't be favourable. Imagine striking trade deals if you had a combined population of 500m and an economic might of 12 trillion.
