Barbados becomes a republic

Good luck to them and perhaps we in the UK will follow suit one day. Britain is becoming a more irrelevant country on the international stage, we are a small European country with few friends these days. Our involvement in Caribbean was initially because of the slave trade, therefore it is no surprise that the Bajans want to sever this tie. When I visited in the 90's it was evident that the local population looked to the USA as a role model / country to migrate to far more than the UK. It is interesting that they have remained in the Commonwealth though and I am glad that they have.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Australia and others follow, particularly if / when Brian becomes king.

Another unnecessary flight by Charlie boy while preaching to the great unwashed about climate change.
Agree, Egypt last last week Barbados this week he’s certainly racking up the air miles up.

He won’t be on Greta Thunberg’s Christmas card list that’s for sure.

Why?
Surely aid should be given where it is needed and where it is most effective.
Why?
If you read my comments again I did say we should look after our own people first long before anyone else.

I’am actually surprised you don’t agree with that, but then again maybe not.

I’am certainly against funding a space programme (India) that we don’t even have here.

Most certainly they should come long before any else.

Look after your own people first in my book.

Charity starts at home. 👍
So in your world our foreign aid budget should be targeted at only 15 states, (which include New Zealand, Australia and Canada) because they have an elderly aristocratic woman of German descent as their head of state?

Personally I don't consider the population of Papua New Guinea or the Soloman islands to be 'my own people' and I am rather surprised that you do given the views that you expressed on here previously. You may want to read the article below, which is the Barbados story from a different viewpoint. I'd guess that the views in there are more widely held in the world at large than those expressed in the British media, i.e. that having the queen as a head of state is an anachronism and a throwback to a colonial past.

Oh god.

You’re not going to sulk all day are you?
Do read what I said.

“As long as they don’t expect help/support/finance when the next hurricane hits that’s fine by me”

So who’s sulking?

Good luck to them. 👍

Truth be known we could do with a few more off the books. 👍

Barbados is outside the hurricane belt we’ve been going every January for years, apart from last year. Storms are prevalent in autumn when there are outbursts of ‘liquid sun’ (rain). Most of the older Barbadians are still very fond of the Queen, can’t see the transition making a lot of difference tbh, they’re too laid back to let it bother them.😄

Was in a Hurricane shelter there in 2004. After the Hurricane passed noticed the Hotels Pool had all the water sucked out of it and was full of crabs and frogs...thousands of them.
One of the best places in the world, and have to disagree slightly with a previous poster about leanings towards the USA. Found a strong allegiance towards Britain, albeit with the desire for being a republic.Besides USA are crap at cricket

All the kids seemed more interested in basketball when I was there.

Think you were a bit unlucky there as it is a rare occurrence, the older guys still love their cricket but maybe the younger generation will eventually lean more to the USA,the US dollar is a shared currency as you probably know. Love the place can’t wait for January all being well! 🏖🏝

The young ones are certainly influenced by Ms Fenty. Last visit was 2016 and can't wait to go back, especially to Oistins 👍

Stayed at time out at the gap, St Lawrence gap a couple of years ago. Watched the 2 England games. I would say the ages of the local support was varied. From kids to oldies.

If the Government doesn't do enough to spend on homeless veterans or whatever your most desirable cause is - that's because they are utter bastards. It's not because they spend an insignificant sum on forgein aid. We set a made up budget every year and have deficits and print our own money to pay it off. If the Tories - who have been in power for 11 years - wanted to end homeless, or help 'our people' they could start tomorrow and whatever we spend in Barbados would have no effect. Wish people would stop falling for this utterly nonsensical idea of how a country's finances work.

That explanation still won't quell any emotion, it still comes across as putting others before our own.

My thoughts.

Interestingly they didn't bother to run a referendum on it. I think we may find the republican Australians will do the same day they get the decision they want

It probably won't make a huge difference to the daily lives of the people who live there.

Is this what the head of MI6 was taking about being in debt and data debt to China? Quickly followed by the EU announcing a €250bn investment pot to counter the Chinese influence.

It's great to see a people say 'thanks for the memories, but we're good now' and be confident enough to do it.

I hope that if they have a problem we would help irrespective of being a republic.

I hope they are inspired to create more national heroes who have a bit more about then than Rhianna!

Let's hope that the next President is elected and not appointed.

All in all, it's no bad thing 👍

British Queen no longer head of state. Still staying in the Commonwealth though. Barbados

Australia next?
Does it matter if they choose to.The Crown through our Government( whoever it is) has very very little ( if any) to do with the politics and day to day running whichever country it happens to be that has the Queen( as it is now) as head of state.
If they or any other country ( who currently have the Monarch as Head of State) chooses to become a republic then it is their choice and I suspect the only people who might be concerned are those who would want to keep it as it is there( not here).
As for here then just so you know I believe having our Queen and whoever follows as head of state, who if we are honest has no political power other than that granted by Parliament through its’ own rules ,is and always will be fine by me.

But choosing to do so.

There wasn't a referendum on the subject, it wasn't on the manifesto in the 2018 elections and it seems that something like 65% were in favour of the status quo.

Personally I suspect a lot of bribes have been paid, the next step will be some large Chinese development loans that mostly get embezzled, then the loans get called in, the country can't pay so they're now the de facto property of China.

Every chance

China is ruled by a very small number of people.
They have complete power over everything that happens in their country.
it's called 'Democracy'. 😾
The largest population on earth ruled by the smallest number of people.
Of course their are elections, however only one party stands.
Their 'democracy' is that you have a choice of candidates, but all those standing for election are Communists. (or whatever they're called these days).
