This happened in November, so a good way through the season. We got promoted this season so a reminder why patience is key.

Interesting 8 out of the 11 were first teamers and played in Cardiff which shows a team needs to gel. I'd say say Kennedy, Collins and O'connor weren't in the team come the end of the season.

Kennedy, Hills, Hughes, Reid, J. Murphy, Collins, Coid, Wellens, Ormerod, Simpson, O'Connor. Subs: Barnes, Milligan, Clarkson, Newell, Thompson

I'm not saying we are getting promoted more a sense of perspective.

and whilst I'm talking to myself, 20 years ago now this game. Where did the time go.
On the way home I was stuck in a traffic jam on the M1 and rang 606 to speak to Adrian Chiles who was the presenter back then. He was asking whether Macca needed to be sacked. I said we'd be fine and would be in the shake up at the end of the season. Even in that game we could have been 5 5 at half time instead of 5 0.

History shows I was right. It was Tony Cottee's first game in charge but by the end of the season, he'd been sacked and Barnet relegated.

That team had some good players, at that level. Compare that to now and I'd say you had 2 good complimentary defenders. A CM who knew how to create and go forward, 2 strikers who you'd argue were our best lower league strike partnership. And then, Simpson.

Balance, plan and purpose.

Yep, I agree it was a good side and a good league. Have to consider there was zamora, beckett, earnshaw and Ormerod. There was a lot of quality.

Strangely I had a similar experience as I was at a NYE party chatting to some pool fans who went sporadically. I said we would get promoted and think we were still bottom half then. I was sneered at but it felt. Like a team just about to get on a roll.

People tend to forget that we went into that game in good form, and I actually think that the 1-0 win at Cheltenham a couple of weeks earlier was a key result for us as it got us into the top half of the table. I'll never forget that one, the weather in the UK had been terrible all that week with high winds and torrential rain. Getting home was an episode in itself.

The Barnet game was weird. By rights, they should have won it about 10-8.

There's another example as well. In our promotion season of 1969/70 we lost 1 6 at QPR and shortly after 0 3 at home to a poor Watford side.
I always think it's better to hover around upper mid table and find your form from Februaryish. We've done that successfully a few times.

It is an interesting perspective that team was particularly strong down the left hand side with Hills and Simmo. Wellens was the playmaker and Murphs and Brett formed a deadly duo. The two central defenders Ian Hughes and Brian Reid were two steady, experienced defenders something similar to what we need now.

I knew on the 21st December when we beat York 2 nil away on a Friday night we would go up. We just had so many good players,.

1969/70 season another London hammering, early season away loss 6-1 to QPR.Season turned out nice in the end.👍😀

I'll tell you where it went. It went for many seasons of us tearing our hair out at getting nowhere. Belekon turned up and Larry ,(new to management) took us up with some good players. Then we stalled until Holloway did his magic and turned us into a top team. Then he left and Ince made us into a crap team then the Oystons turned the screw, we all walked out and we sank to League 2. That's what happened. Now, good stuff happens.

To think you guys took more to Barnet than you did for both of your last two play off finals added together

We tended to always take 300-500 to London area 3:00pm games back then Barnet being a new ground for many... but add in the "being in the bottom div" multiplier I'd guess 410 were there.

Remember the kiddiminster game on sky , not a surprise we came good when you look at that team, Brett was too good for div 3

I was at the Birmingham 7-1 game , Darren Bradshaw always looked about 48.

"On the way home"

There was no need to put that in Wiz, I am sure the good folk of AVFTT know that you were among 1 of the 137 that did actually go to Barnet. 🤣

I can't say I was there when we shipped 7 but I did go to Barnet for the first leg of the play-offs on a Sunday morning with 5 of us in my mates brothers girlfriends mini.

Do I win a prize ?

I was there and I reckon half a dozen or so from Blackpool and a load of them Basil lot.

We're too young to get lost looking back. ;)

I didn't go to Barnet. I've never been to Barnet. At least I'm honest.
I wish I did go. I was sat in the wainwright club on hornby Road with a PNE fan who was ripping the piss out of me. Didn't help at the start of the game when I predicted a 4 nil win to us..

I went with the missus and my mate Simon, who's brother lived locally and sponsored the game even though he was a Pool fan. Simon got very, very drunk in hospitality drowning sorrows.

I got there late risked a parking space, 1-0 down already as I clicked through the turnstile it was 2-0! Got back my car had been towed. £350
To get car back, thought bollox not going home booked a hotel for me and two mates got leathered,
Woke up about a grand lighter all in all.

Was he a bit simple and at that match met a pie man? I have an idea who that pie man could be (smiley)
