Taking the piss out of Blackpool!
The amount of deaths in Blackpool due to Covid compared to Burnley or Blackburn, Rochdale etc appear to be well out of context.
There are fat people all over the country and drug problems and poverty.
Why was Blackpool singled out for this report to emphasise why Covid is deadly?
Fncking arseholes

Because Covid strikes harder on the old, poor and unhealthy and Blackpool is full of all of them and has never been given the resources to address it.

Look at the death rates between us and other towns in our county. I don’t understand the piss take report.

Because we have awful poverty. It's not a race to the bottom competition with East Lancs. Ask the question, why are we being singled out? Not, why aren't you going after East Lancs first. It's because years of Tory neglect and deliberate debasing of the poor - yes it's true, don't turn away in disbelief - years of deliberate Tory targeting of the poor have led to this town being poor and squalid in too many areas. What's needed is a fight against these selfish Tory politicians. We need to be rid of them. Once and for all.

Dont think anyone was taking the piss. Nothing funny a out ut at all.
True. We are not top of the list - not even close. Never have been during this pandemic. Obviously not comparable to the likes of Devon / Cornwall, but infinitely better than other towns & cities not mentioned.
Easy target imo

Yep, it's all the Tories fault isn't it because when we had a Labour government Blackpool was a ** boom town. 🤦‍♂️

It's an easy target because the town is poverty stricken with little or no purpose in the modern world. Its function at the moment is for the young and talented to leave and the impoverished, unwilling and incapable to replace them.

None of that is the fault of the people who live or have grown up there, so by singling out Blackpool they are highlighting the dreadful politics that have allowed this to happen to our town and others like it.

Trying to deflect by finding comparable towns in neglected states isnt helping.

I doubt there’s a coastal town anywhere in the country that doesn’t have extreme levels of poverty. On the plus side, Blackpool is the second most visited town outside London, but it’s lacking large employers, especially in the tech and financial sectors.

How do you attract those to the town?

Why is everything focused towards tech and finance?
Why not try and get more manufacturing here, or are today's kids afraid to get their hands dirty and are scared of actually working?
Having said that, the country need to reestablish manufacturing nation wide first.

Agreed, we need a range of businesses, but you need finance and tech to start manufacturing in this day and age. The question is, how do you attract large employers to the area?

I must admit I was surprised they ' picked on ' us

There are a plethora of areas with far worse covid records - if anything Blackpool has bucked the local trend somewhat maybe as a result of it's proximity to the sea

The Labour Governments under Blair and Brown did enormous amounts of good for the poorest and hardest hit, including in Blackpool. That's why the public gave them three convincing General Election victories. 2019 was the first time in 27 years that the Tories were given a convincing victory. In 2010 it could have been a Lib/Lab coalition. The Tories didn't win it. In 2015 they edged in with a small majority and in 2017 they needed to buy the support of the DUP to get their legislation through Parliament.
No, from the moment Cameron & Osborne got their mits on the exchequer they've used the poor, the disabled and "just about managing" to pay for austerity and sent towns like Blackpool on a downward spiral of poverty.

It's lazy journalism by the increasingly Grauniadalike BBC.

Just another reason to push the South East off in to the channel really, they can take the Cotswolds with them as well, just an effete Trough of Bowland.

You would think, with two elected Tory MP’s in the town, that they would be fighting tooth and nail for their constituents given the levels of poverty, associated ill health and the frightening dampening of the local economy, so reliant on tourism, through the lockdowns.

Then I remembered! Ah yes, two Tory MPs, silly, silly me.
