BBC4

Shame. This is only going to continue to escalate in the current climate though.
Can’t see the license fee system continuing for much longer myself.

The majority of its content is archived programming anyway. I actually thought Boris' mate was going to bin it.
I suspect some of the original material will go to BBC 2.
I just hope it's not part of a general trend towards dumbing down of TV.

I recorded a couple of good documentaries about Blackpool from BBC 4: one about the development of the town as a seaside resort and one about the heyday of the shows. It has carried some really interesting, niche stuff - not pandering to the need for huge audiences or the potential for resale through the BBC's commercial arm.
I wouldn’t mind seeing that first one, think I’ve seen the latter many times

When I’m abroad and people ask me what I like about being British, it’s usually a very long and reflective silence followed by ‘...BBC 4 I guess?’

8-9 on a Tuesday evening is one of the best hours on TV at the moment.

It's the best channel they have and this won't go down well with people who watch TV to be informed as well as entertained. Why not give up all the expensive office space they use instead?

No-they'll keep Googlebox and The Chase and they'll be storyline on Corrie about suicide bombing soon.

Quality television for the masses (rolls eyes)

Gogglebox is ok.

I only record the odd drama like The Bay from ITV, I've not watched it in years unless they've got an England match on, just an appalling channel.

Not for me although its good to see real people getting a few quid from the TV companies, rather than some of the luvvies who have the personalities of cardboard. I dont how they've got away with this Equity nonsense for so long which is nothing more than a closed shop.

Drama is fine as long as it balanced and not done to get a cheap hit like the soaps tend to do.

I have never watched it . I usually watch BBC1 or BBC2 as above I watched The Bay and Gogglebox and then it's sport.

Monday's are BBC 2- Mastermind, Only Connect, University Challenge and this week was Finding Jackie Charlton

A bit of a sweeping statement that, Lytham. Unforgotten was excellent as were others I can't remember off hand. It is the never-ending stream of "reality" bollox on Ch4 & 5 that I can't abide.

Unforgotten was one of the dramas I recorded, it's their strong point, Endeavour is my favourite TV show.

I'd quite happily pay double the license fee. Fantastic value
When you compare a full Sky and BT package with all the additional streaming extras will cost you about £100 a month, (cue posts about firesticks, illegal streaming etc) then yes, the licence fee is fantastic value.

I agree the BBC is generally fantastic, but their approach to licensing is beyond corrupt and really is unacceptable.

A lot of those complaining about cancel culture sure seem enthusiastic about cancelling things.
Same with those who complain about lack of free speech. I see Loz Fox was screaming into a microphone in the middle of London about being silenced. Meanwhile Piers was also complaining about his lack of free speech in a massive article in a major newspaper read by loads.

I dont know if anyone has seen it but they've been running the Freddie Mills story of a couple of years ago,who was the British light heavyweight boxing champion of the 60's who was found dead in his car in the West End.

They interviewed a number of gangsters inc the infamous Richardsons, and its reckoned he was murdered professionally on the orders of the US mafia.

I dont want to cast aspersions but in that area* of London there is a Basil Street with an apartment block called 'Basil Mansions'. @WestHertsUnsocialClub and @Hertsseasider know the score.

In the way they pursue any individual that opts not to have a TV licence. The approach is borderline criminal / fraudulent.
Its against the law not to have one and of course is a self funding concession of older people who get it for free.
People have been happy to pay a ton* for every type of film/entertainment package but not a national open to all TV service.

It’s not against the law not to have one at all. However the BBC licensing agents certainly sail extremely close to the wind by the way they carefully (and in my view fraudulently) give that to impression to vulnerable individuals, through carefully crafted wording.

Unless you watch “Live TV broadcasts” or only BBC on catch up, no TV licence is needed. You can have a TV and watch Netflix ot iTV on demand without any need for a licence, perfectly legally.

I agree with this. I don't think there is anything else in this country where a company can legally hound people in the manner done by TV licensing. Those who don't even own a TV (I know a youngish couple like that who choose not to) still get hounded after their initial declaration to check they still don't have one, something which doesn't sit right to me. It's like they cannot accept or believe someone doesn't watch TV.
