Best Female Vocalist Ever

Too many to choose from but I'm a fan of Lauryn Hill, Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Sade to name a few.

For the rockers on here , I nominate the beautiful Charlotte Wessels from Delain

* with an honourable mention to Tara Turunen from Nightwish

For the old school in me , then Kate Bush was rather memorable.

Appalled by the blatant sexism on the board and the continual disregard for the talents of one half of the population, I thought I'd better do my bit to address things.

Perhaps it's not up for debate and we all know that it's Karen Carpenter ?

The voice of an angel.
Dion DiMucci

All very subjective this, same as the ‘best male’ and ‘most over-rated’ threads - if you really want the best female vocalist, we’d probably be looking at someone classicly trained.

For what it’s worth, the ‘best’ I’ve ever seen is Marcella Detroit, I think she was in the Guinness book of records at the time for having the biggest octave range.

Darleen Love, Karen Carpenter, Judith Durham, Aretha, Dusty, Mama Cass, Tina Turner.
I was listening to ‘I am Australian’ with Judith Durham and the rest of the Seekers the other night after a few beers.
It’s the video clip of them performing before an Aussie rules footy final, and she must have been 60 and still awesome.
👍

A lot tougher than best male vocalist.
In no order cos I can't split Aretha, Karen C, Annie Lennox.
Nods to Whitney,Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson and Striesand but there are a lot more.
All great voices.

Forgot about Kate Bush but I'm still not putting her above Karen Carpenter.

So I'll go.

1. Karen Carpenter
2. Kate Bush
3. Alison Moyet

I like Adele, a great voice no doubt but she also has the mouth of sewer art.

I am not a fan of females swearing and that's cost her being joint third on my list.

Diana Ross her concert in New Yorks Central Park in 1983 in a storm showed what a fantastic singer she is and what a performance.

Tori Amos, pj Harvey, Joni Mitchell ...
All singer songwriters who can also play instruments......👍👍
Lots of good singers just do covers etc..

From those I've seen live, I'd have to plump for Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry and Pauline Murray.
I'm also partial to Kate Bush and I know Poly Styrene's voice grated on some but I love X Ray Spex so she's up there for me.

Dusty Springfield. Some great choices by other posters, all having merit to be up there, but this lady was more soulful than virtually all the female black singers. Listen to her and be amazed.

The only one close for me was Billie Holliday.

Honourable mention to Debbie Harry and Lana Del Rey

You beat me to it southshore. Poly is my favourite female vocalist. Not the best if you're looking for pure tone, but just so different.
A mention as well for Kate Bush, Maggie Reilly and Annie Haslam. But it's Poly for me

1. Sandy Denny - most beautiful voice
2. Joni Mitchell - best singer songwriter
3. Janis Joplin - best rock voice - no contest

Always a regret that out of the literally hundreds and hundreds of bands I've seen, I never got the chance to see Spex, even when they briefly re-formed.
Edited to say..we may not agree on politics but at least we agree on football and obviously some music, so that's good enough for me. Smiles.

Lauryn Hill for me 👌
Saw Lauren Hill at a free gig on Lawsons field years ago.
It was originally billed as the Fugees but for some reason the guys couldn’t attend, so she did an a Capella set, absolute class.

It depends on what day it is. What’s important is did they also write the songs. It’s not just about the delivery. But if I had to single one out & I didn’t like her at the time she was at her peak as it was music for mums & aunties, Shirley Bassey. She’s not a favourite of mine but what a voice.
Recently saw this girl & wow.
